 so i guess my grandma is dying...

shes been in bad shape for the past couple years due to alzheimer's. last year my uncle, her son, found her on the couch in her own filth and had been there for at least a week. she hadnt eaten, bathed, taken any meds and was completely out of it.
they immediately got her to the hospital and began cleaning her up and bringing her health up to par. it took about 3 months, but she was finally to a healthy point and was some what coherent.
a few months ago she went back to the hospital due to some complications and yesterday she was released because there was nothing more the hospital can do. shes dying....
at first it didnt hurt as much, but as i type it seems to hit me more.
death isnt new to me. ive had close friends and relatives die. i could easily make a list of about 10 close people that have passed. out of everyone my uncle was the only one that left me to tears for a good 3 days.
there is no way i can get up to see my grandmother due to money issues, but things dont look good and i feel that she wont be with us here in the next couple weeks.
kinda hurts...

Sorry to hear that, Poorboy.
My grandmother passed a few years ago from complications arising from Alzheimer's. At the end she didn't even know who any of us were, my mom (her daughter) included. She would sometimes smile when we came to visit and talked to her. She wouldn't respond. We liked to think she could recognize us, but in all honesty I think the disease erased any noticeable memories of her 10 grandchildren.
If you can make it to see her, do it. If she has any recollection of who you are and how you two are related, cherish it while it lasts. Alzheimer's is a motherfucker.

she doesnt remember who tim was, her son, the uncle that left me in tears... those two were the closest. im going to see if i can borrow the money, but a plane ticket from texas to washington last minute isnt going to be cheap.
im thinking about maybe pawning some shit. not sure yet.

Lost both of my grampa in 2 years.
Both my grammas are fine but one of them seems to have gone from 40 years old to 80 in less than a month.
Death is part of life. Sadly the only thing I can say is, sorry, deal with it... We all have too.

I took care of my grandmother during her last month... when the hospice nurse said it was time to go into a nursing home, she said no... she grabbed her rosary (which I bought for her in Venice) and her bible and calmly went to bed. She died in peace, right there. I am doing the same for my grandfather now. It is tough man... Put your feelings aside and just let them go happy. IT IS REALLY HARD TO DO. Trust me.

Sorry to hear man.
My mother is from Germany so I didn't get to see my grandpa before he passed. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to visit my grandma before she passes and it's eating me alive.
aren't plane tickets from NYC to Florida like $100? I'm sure your plane ticket won't be way out of your expenses. I'd definitely find some sort of money to go.

dementia is even worse... when elderly people come into my ER, and they have dementia-they are very scared. and there is not a lot you can do to help them. You need to be strong, and hold her hand and say everything will be alright. I remember with my grandmother all she cared about was her garden. She kept asking about the hedges being trimmed, and the ivy not raiding the pepper plants. It is very hard, but you need to be strong.

you definitely need to go and hold her hand, if not for her but for you. It will help you cope. I deal with death and dying on a daily basis.

Go spend some time with her PB. My grandfather died in a horrible car wreck.. gone in the blink of an eye. I'll never forget that morning when I found out. Be thankful that you've been given some time to spend with her before she goes.

My Grandma is dying at the moment as well. Brown blood was coming out of her ear the last time I saw her.

i lost both my grandparents two years ago. they both had similar types of situations. one of my grandmothers had a fall and was trapped on the floor for a few days before anyone came to help her , my other grandma had collapsed at her bed after having some sort of stroke or heart attack or something and was found the next day . it's really sad man, but this sort of thing has to happen eventually. the best thing that can be done now is just to smooth their transition as best possible. even if she doesn't remember you, it doesn't matter. just try to make her happy n stuff and see to it that she gets good care and is as comfortable as she can be.

thanks, i did.
i also got off the phone with my mom and the shape my grandma is in is pretty bad.
she was saying that its not so much her memory, but her functioning skills. everything is pretty much shut off. she doesnt know when to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, or any other major functioning skills.

yeah.
my mom was asking if i was even sure if i wanted to go. last time i saw here was about 5 years ago and she was my perfect little grandma. now, the shape that shes in, might be too difficult for anyone to see. the thing is, i would be there for just my grandma or myself. someone needs to be there by my moms side as well.
i know its gonna be tough, but... well thats it. i know its going to be tough.

It will be tough. Keep in mind the person you are going to visit is most likely not the person you remember from years ago. It's hard to come to grips with. Stay strong for your mom, also. I'm sure she'll need it.

Shame man. I still have both my grans (grandads both dead before I was born!) that are in decent shape, I dread the day I get a phone call saying one of them is severely ill!! Stay strong and I'm sure you can find enough money to go see her!

yeah, its going to be much harder for her to grasp. the cool thing though, this makes me extremely happy, is that 2 years ago before shit got bad they made a trip out to Ireland. My moms side of the family, both my grandma and grandpa were both immigrants from Ireland and my mom was the first to be born here in the US.
when early signs were rising my mom decided to take her back to where she grew up. if you give me a sec, ill post pics. i gotta find em.
