Well, kinda all over, but generally inner/outer north, inner/outer east/southeast. Psilocybe subaeruginosa (the most common active mushroom in vic) loves old, greying tanbark, sun, and rain. You are unlikely to find them in a park, unless that park has tanbark patches. You're more likely to find them on a medianstrip somewhere.
Also, don't bother hunting at 2AM, not only is it ridiculously hard, it's also look much dodgier (don't want someone to call the cops!) and is more dangerous since you should be fully aware of what you are picking by seeing it in its habitat in full light

Hey, not being selfish. If you're expecting everybody to come to you and commit time answering questions that could have been answered by investing your own time with a couple of clicks... That's pretty selfish.
It's just annoying getting simple q's like that because it's honestly just lazy. It is a common courtesy to do your own research before asking q's on a forum. The ancient ones who've been around here so long might get cranky

I found a nice patch just then. Stumbled across it in a local park around some natives and faded tanbark, only took 8 and left the rest since they were quite small.

It's hard to know for sure, officially September is considered the end. I got a big flush from my patch in mid August last year, which turned out to be its last hurrah for the season. There's a post from COOKED101 a few pages back saying he found a few in October in WA one time. My patch is still fruiting now, but for sure its slowing down. I'd say give it another month before you consider throwing the towel in.

Ive always had a bit luck but this is my first year in melbourne so i spose it all comes down to if your spot is shady moist and well taken care of not picked to much, a patch can only give u so many shrooms in the end. All up to the conditions around and the size of the patch.

Wish more people did this. I've seen at least 5 good, promising patches ruined this season by pickers with bad form.

Well not everyone is educated on how to correctly harvest mushrooms, sadly.I really hope someone doesnt come along and ruin my patch. Imagine how great it would be if all shroomers used scissors and waited for them to drop spores
The patch 5 minutes from my house is getting really dry, sometimes even drying up before the veil breaks.

Whats wrong with not using scissors? I always pinch and twist, severing mid-stem using my fingernails and making damn sure not to damage the mycelium. Is this bad form?

No that isn't bad form, I just forgot about that method when I wrote it.
What happends to a patch once all the mushrooms dry up before they drop spores, will it fruit again next season?

Not at all i use that method when there are heaps of people around but some subs stems are just so thick, found sciccors to be extremley quick and clean in big clumpy patches.

Yeah man, as long as it's a decent sized patch it'll be good to go for next year. Small patches can disappear sometimes, but by the sounds of what you've said about this patch it should be back to its best come next winter.

Ah thankyou. You may have mistaken me for someone else though I havent spoken about the size of my patch. A few weeks ago it had around 25 or so subs, but now it has about 12 and half of them are dried out and black. Do you think it will fruit next winter?

Is the season finished or some pickings still out there? I went two weeks ago and picked a small bag full but it was showing signs of a season's end.

Indeed I may have. Well anyway it's impossible to say for sure, fungi can do weird things especially if your patch is disturbed in some way over the summer. But all things considered you can be confident it will fruit next winter. Certainly the shrivelling aborts you're getting now have no bearing on how it will perform next year, that's just an indication that your patch is packing up for the season.

Some pickings still for sure bro, depending on location. Sounds like the fat lady is clearing her throat in some areas.
