Random but after reading this thread I have something to add.
I had gotten an ovoid sporeprint in the mail and had spread half of it in a mulch pile about a year ago. I was surprised it actually grew but did not yield much, it was like 6 mushrooms. A year later I check back and a small amount is growing back. In may I spread the rest of the sporeprint this year in another bed of mulch and it is growing really great.

The New Patch has a large amount of mycelium spreading over the mulch there's white all over and its becoming more spread out ,it is now the beginning of August.  I am wondering how long this takes to fruit and if theres anything else I should do to help it grow. Its been raining a lot where I live in New York but it also gets very hot this time of year.

All I can say is that my patches (in Middle Europe) fruit from spring to fall.

They fruit  all through the summer, depending on precipitations, temps, air humidity:

cool.

JBurnt where are you located?
also, the heat should not damage the mycelium...
you can add another layer of wood-chips on top to help keep it cool.

Don't worry about that at all. I've been watching some myc very closely this summer and it turns out that I have yet to see a temperature too high for ovoid myc. In fact, the myc grows fastest on days when the top couple of inches of wood chips reach nearly 105-110F under full sun. As long as it stays moist, they LOVE really high temps. (it is hard to keep things from drying out at those temps... Daily watering is a must, and a layer of grass clippings really traps the moisture and is good source of nutrients and structural scaffolding for growing myc)

I'm wondering what to do with my experiments.

Remember the 3 containers I started?  2 with stream sand and Scott's mulch and one with a multispore on aspen/cardboard?

Well, I added a few pieces of hardwood mulch to the aspen cardboard and this is what it looks like now:

Here's a couple of the sand mixes:

Notice how strong the myc is when searching for food:

Why do I post these?

I'm wondering what I should do with them now.  Try to innitiate pinning?  Or expand them outside into patches?

Your thoughts?

Awesome!  I am jealous of your myc growth, whatever I try I do not get anything near that.  How would you go about initiating pinning?
I would just put them out and start a natural patch, but that's because I have no talent for cultivation and rely on mother nature to do the hard work
If you try to get them to fruit post the pics and details!

I think the myc growth is so fast and furious right now because they are from spores (babies really) and not from taking an already colonized piece of wood that has been growing for years (again the whole scenescence thing).

Place into freezer for a night and then into a shotgun chamber (one reason I don't really feel like doing it because I'd have to then build a chamber  lol).

I'm thinking this would be the more sure fire way of getting fruits.  I hear woodlovers are hard to fruit indoors.

I may try one of the sand mixes just to see if I can do it.  Of course if I am successfull, I'll post the pics.

Since you have those small containers, experiment a little. My suggestion... Place them in the fridge for a week, see if you can simulate a winter... Try putting some grass seeds in one so there will be more springlike activities when they warm.

Sorry to bump an old thread,  before a month ago I didn't know this place existed .

I just found out these damn things were not blue foot   as they are assumed to be by locals.  I can say with 100% certainty that these are being found in south central Ohio along the scioto river from around circleville south.  With some frequency in the spring in Ross and pike counties.  I assume scioto county too, but I'm not brave enough to look .  Also the paint creek system (there are a couple branches).  Especially in the 20 or so miles before it reaches the scioto.. this area offers tons of knot weed filled flood plains.. and there is a public bike path that runs for miles along the creek.  It was along this creek where I first ran into them while looking for morels.  They were fairly obvious because the mushrooms were an odd greenish blue color.  In debris left over from flooding ..

Just fyi.. I normally just leave them in the ground.. and generally don't photograph things of this sort.

I've really only talked to seasoned hunters who were successful in finding them..you know the type who barely have a high school education, but know Latin and proper nomenclature

No fall fruiting in SE PA, but it's dry as a bone.  Supposed to get some rain next week, I'll definitely be watching my patches.  Some fall ovoids would be sweet! :mushroom2:

Not that I'm aware of. I found them in the spring there.  I just wanted to add that info because I am new here and wasn't here in the spring to report it

I had my best luck on north fork /paint creek from the scioto to through nf village and down the bike path toward FF.  You know how that little creek floods in the spring .. I've talked to another guy who says he finds them in Jackson county, but there isn't much there as far as creeks or rivers

We've had a couple chilly nights, and 2+ inches of rain on the way... I'm thinking if they are going to fruit this fall, this would be it or is it too soon?

I don't know, I always hear people saying Ovoids can fruit in the fall, but is that just a Europe/PNW thing?  Does anyone have experience finding Ovoids on the east coast in the fall?  I'd love to think it's possible and there's definitely a lot of myc growth going on around in the right places here, but I'm not so sure that will translate into fruiting.

Mj has documented fall finds in threads here from the east coast I believe.

I have occasionally checked patches in central PA throughout the summer after heavy rains, still haven't found anything since about the end of June.  Like everyone else, I am hoping for at least a few fall fruits....

Yeah, based on the way myc grows in summer heat, I think they have completed all the growth needed to fruit by the end of summer, and go dormant when it gets cold, but fall confuses some of them into fruiting. I'm pretty much assuming fall fruits are a kind of misfire. I'm thinking about piling ice cubes on one of my mulch beds for a couple days to see if I can induce fruiting.

I heard that the mycelium takes time to build up metabolites, or useful nutrition, the intermediates in metabolism. Its like ready to eat food, they produce these for a while and when optimal fruiting conditions come about, they quickly exhaust their food stores to reproduce with spores.

We had a nice heavy rain 2 days ago, and have been having very mild temperatures.  I checked one of my patches today and not a single pin was to be found :frown:.  I'll check the other tomorrow just for shits and giggles.  It's a long way until may...
