Beautiful. How long did it take to find those? We've been having such amazing weather this month. Hopefully they come early in my area!
What are the min. and max. temperatures of your hunting grounds currently?

Average Min temp is around 8' Celcius, and Average Max 15' atm, these were found at the very top of a mountain which was around 10' when I was there (Jumper weather) - 99% of the area is still yet to start popping subs, and prob wonl't for at least the next month or so.
Other areas in mid - North NSW that I have hunted in the past don't produce anything until mid - late April, particularly at lower altitudes like the coast

I am close to the ACT, Get out there and go for a Hunt! Check Sub-Alpine areas that are moist + Good luck!
Read every page of previous NSW Season Threads on this forum, there is a wealth of info if you are willing to spend a few hours reading - I wish I had these threads six years ago

+ the ''search'' function is your best friend, post lots of pics for us

You would get a better response in the health and wellness forum.
I doubt that a vasoconstrictor will help with Back pain. I would recommend light exercise and stretching. And tiger blood.

I think they're quite widespread, anywhere with eucalypts, a bit of moisture and night temps <8 degrees should have em. I know they're found in perth, the blue mountains, southern tablelands, southern highlands, victoria, sydney, tasmania.

Ill head out soon and see if anything is around. Doubt it though. A friend found a nice glowing Omphalotus tonight. Should have some pics of that soon.

Some nice bluing on your stems.
I went and had a look a bit over a week ago and did not find anything happening in a few spots and this was after a bit of rain.
I think I will have to wait a while longer until the temps drop.
Still will be good to watch this forum to get some motivation to hunt...

Unfortunately my friend 'couldnt be bothered to take photos' which is understandable i guess since you have to set up a long exposure and tripod etc. I saw him a couple of days later and he gave me the mushrooms which he'd been keeping in a paper bag in the fridge. They were glowing quite strongly when i got them, but didnt get home to take photos till the following night and by then they were pretty dry and had dimmed a lot
You could still see the glow pretty well with naked eye, but waaay too dim to get a decent photo. Still i tried
2min exposure in the dark. See the green smudges?

Wish i had got hold of them sooner. Oh well ill be searching for more of these in my travels.

If you can see it with the naked eye, you can get good pictures. You may need to borrow a DSLR which can do high ISO's without too much noise. I use a Canon 60D which is particularly good at that. See this thread.

Wow nice pics in that thread. I tried all the ISO settings, highest aperture, 30 sec to 2min exposures but nothing came out. Im thinking of buying a nikon d5100 actually. Apparently they perform well with high ISO's.
Anyway, sorry getting off topic

Went on a brief hunt today. Confirmed for no sub action around me atm. Did find a nice cluster of Omphalotus nidiformis though. Nice fresh, large specimens. Now that ive actually seen mature specimens, i realise ive been walking past these for years . They are so unassuming in daylight. Made a thread for those here
A quick pic of those glowing:
Aside from that, i had a pleasant discovery in my back yard while throwing out some compost.

Nice little bonus until the subs start popping up

Yeah they are cubes. I dump all old manure, spores and cakes in a pile up near compost bin and occasionally some pop up. These are the first in quite a while though.

Yeah they're fully dried in those pics. We picked quite a few more than that (including an Amanita). Those pictured are just my share, and this was our second hunt too. We got more the first time, about a week ago. My friends took some photos of the whole first lot while they were still fresh that I'll try to get up on here soon.
They are definitely out there, at least here in Canberra!

galerina marginata is the most deadly you also want to avoid the genera Pholiota, Tubaria, Conocybe, Pholiotina most of which are toxic and grow in the similar habitat as subaeruginosa. Good luck and post your finds, that way you can make sure you wont end up dying from eating any mushrooms.

Once you know what you're looking for there's really nothing that looks that much like a sub. Sometimes from a distance one might fool you, but you can usually tell just from the colour and size whether it's good or not.

Galerina marginata and Pholiotina rugosa. They look different to experienced hunters but can be confused for Psilocybe subaeruginosa by new people.
Spore print all mushrooms you find until you learn how to spot the differences.

Cool. I only just noticed this thread, cant wait to see some more pictures
Sadly i dont think i will find any subs this season. I moved (quite abit inland from sydney) and the weather has been hot during the days and cold during the nights, and on top of that, no rain. Plus i dont even think they grow here.. I wish i didnt move.. anyway, ill have a look anyway later when it gets colder

Smell is described often as earthy, but I like to think of it as "tangy", kind of reminds me of tangy chips with mushroom. Texture of the cap is a lot more springy/gelatanous than compared to the soft jelly texture of galerinas etc, and the stalk is a lot more fiberous, more like the stem of a wheat grass as opposed to solid of malleable.
As for taste, don't do it. Don't taste unidentified mushrooms.

The last pic of the blue subaeruginosa is cool, could almost be pic of the month material if you had put the camera on its side and used a little bit of flash.

Thanks Alan,
Alas I don't have a flash for this particular camera.
Do you prefer this photo?

Thanks for all your help in past years identifying these things btw.

Please don't pick pins like that, you are destroying the future growth of the patch and the ability for the mushroom to spread to other areas.
Wait till the caps are fully open then pick away like a madman.

Where they were they would not survive. These ones would be a smashed memory by now.

Nothing much grows after 300 sheep go through after being jetted. These were on the inside edge of the sheep run so they would be no more. There are others I left behind in the area for a later stage..

How do you figure? Surely spores do not become present only when a fruiting body is ready to drop them?
Be curious to know the answer to this actually.
On a side note, even if that was the case I am quite sure not every pin would be trampled. Why pick such a pitiful amount of material to potentially harm the patches overall health, instead of waiting a couple of weeks and picking it silly with no ill effects.

um okay im a little (FUCKING WELL AND TRULY) baked.. sorry if it doesn't make sense
Spores are produced while the caps opens and the mushroom matures, pins have no spores. The cap opens and the gills start to darken with spores, then they are released.
Mooshing pins and walking them over the place will help spread them due to the mycelium on the mushroom, more so then spores being present
Am i on-subject?

Lol, yea now you are making a heap more sense, at the same time everything you've just said relates directly to what I had already mentioned.

I am also curious as to when mushrooms actually develop spores, I know full well when they drop them.

Pins will have spores in them, though the spores themselves may not be fully developed and therefore not fertile. I have found that shortly after the veil breaks and the cap starts to open more is when spores are fully mature.

Hunting forum rules:
4. Do not ask about current finds in your area. These posts have been flooding the forum for years. If you're curious about if mushrooms are growing in your area, get out there and look! Mushrooms don't read the books. Sometimes they fruit outside of season. There is no set date for any season, only vast generalizations. Your best bet is that if it's close to the season for the mushroom you are looking for and its been raining, you just might find some.
5. Do not make threads or posts discussing or reporting the weather. This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. As a general rule of thumb, if it has rained within the last 1-10 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, and the time of year is correct then it is very likely that the mushroom you are looking for is growing.

Found these today growing around some bushland, not exactly sure if they are subaeruginosa since some are quite a bit larger than the ones I've seen before, but I'm pretty sure they are. Decided to post these pics here just to make sure all of them are alright

I have hunted Newcastle and Barrington and had no luck - It is a bit to far up the coast for Subs, you will have to drive towards Sydney.
Went out for a hunt today - nothing much happening, the weather has not dropped enough for my patches. Still had a good walk with the dog and found a few spots with Galerina's that will hopefully yield Subs once the temperature drops.
Did not bring anything home except a leach attached to my leg.

Hi all, I'm new here. Been lurking for a while, thought I might make an account and post.
I am pretty new to hunting, but am looking forward to this season eagerly, have learned quite a bit from reading through older posts and think I have some of the finer points down pat. We shall see.
Looking like it might be a decent season ahead, what with the summer that wasn't. Things are pretty damp now too. Just waiting for the conditions to become a bit more favourable (aren't we all?).
Heading up into the hills soon as it looks like the right type of conditions needed to get some flushes happening maybe on the way.
Again, looking forward to this season and also watching this thread as it unfolds. Any tips are welcome, though I will continue to scourge the older posts as much as time permits.
Cheers.

Warm welcome to you TriptoniK! I wish you luck and fortune on your hunts. I really found the old NSW 2009-2011 season threads helpful, I think reading all these saved my alot of frustration in the field.
Only a few finds here.
Still hoping to find the motherload one day...

Thanks for the warm welcome zarzar, been looking through both of those threads and some older ones too. Very helpful. Just ordered a good Aussie field guide, looking forward to getting it and reading about all the different species occurring here in Aus and going out and IDing some and hopefully getting some decent pics. Hopefully get some pics for this thread soon too.

A hypothetical here...
Say there was a decent patch growing on the upper end of a slope several years ago. A patch that is unlikely to be accessible any more. What is the likelihood of finding mushrooms of the same species down slope of that patch?
In theory, I think it is a likely scenario of where the spores would spread and mushrooms would potentially grow.
What do others think?

That looks like mycelium to me. It also looks like a cultivated patch, nature didn't place that piece of plywood there. I would check that spot and in the next couple of days. I think mycelium grows rather quickly right before it fruits.

All look like subs - just a bit dry.

yea its allways easier to tell if its a sub when they are fresh, so allways best to check them before you begin drying, Because IMO subs CAN look way more different in colour and appearance when dried , but this shoudnt be a concern if you take the advice above..

Im out of aus at the moment, coming back in a month, hopefully season is still on! Where I am though shrooms are in abundance, but I cant find any info to get them myself, which is the only way i will consume.. only can get them from gourmet shroom sellers, which I dont like cause I would rather know where they came from, and spiritually i think it helps the trip if you put the work in to hunt and get them. Anyway hopefully NSW season is still going strong in a months time.. it makes my blood boil that it is illegal to consume subs, its insanity... if only shrooms were mandatory, what a world we would live in! goodluck and happy hunting

Im not requesting a hunting partner here im just saying i know where they are, i've spread the love with a few members here and am ever willing again this year.
Oh and to any members i gave my number out to over the years, that phone number i had connected since 98' got disconnected, all in preparation for the move. Hit me up for my new number, wouldn't mind re-connecting.
Peace YO!

Went for a hunt last week in the mountains, not only did I find a nice haul of subs in the pines, but 2 solitary cubes by accident in a field accross the road aswell. Never thought I'd find subs and cubes on the same day!

1st Picture is the cubes, 2nd showing the cubes and a pile of subs and 3rd is an artsy one my friend took
happy hunting they out there

Lol, i bet you're getting a shitload of msgs now simo
Subs are starting to pop up around sydney. Not many around yet, found only a small handful. Some photos in the field:

Almost tripped over this guy as i was walking around:

He just did not give a fuck i was there, probably thought he was blending into the little piece of wood he was sitting on. Got the camera really close, maybe 15cm away from his head. Only flew away when i stood up suddenly.
And an extra pic of a handsome Leratiomyces ceres:

Happy hunting, and watch out for those owls

Went for a quick hunt this morning, leaches and all Found a nice little patch with some nice big fruits. This is my first patch and hopefully not the only one. Was pretty happy though. Hoping this patch develops in size as the season improves. The mulch nearby was pretty dry. Found a suitably damp microclimate and got lucky. Don't think I would have had as much luck if I hadn't done a lot of research, especially here. What a great site!!!
Here is my haul.

I read a lot of talk of patches. Is one supposed to prepare a suitable area at a high altitude with one's own mulch? I thought they just grew in the rotting wood up there. I've been to the mountains about five times now, all the way up and down and found no subs.

All the way up and down? every squaRe inch?
.. they are there bro, patience and persistance. Checking appropriate locations where one might expect to find subs would be a better way than just aimless walking round.
Someone posted here the other day and i think its a great explanation. Dont go to far deep into the woods, in my personal experience, they love grassy areas on the fringes of woodlands and parkland. Mulchy, decaying tree matter with slight water holding capacity soil and dappled sunlight areas are great to find them, however, they can grow in many more places than this. The can grow entirely on man mulched areas, my best patches do, they also grow great at the bottom of valleys a little above the river or waters.
There is no real absoulte set in stone description for where they grow, provided the conditions are right. All i can say is when you find them, you just feel the conditions, its in the air, you can smell it, taste it, feel it in the air.. (not the subs, you can feel they are growing there) i don't know what it is but once you know these conditions when you reach an area they are growing, you just know it.
Its like a experienced hunter going out for deer, he gets to an area, and can feel the conditions are right, and with experience you too will feel the conditions and just know if your wasting your time in an area or not.. Read the official 2008-2011 threads, very helpful shiet there. VERY.
*EDIT* i find shrooms grow best in habitats like in the second photo on that page, if you dont find what your looking for in that photo, your not trying hard enough..

My top tip is to go places where water is going to collect. If you're just walking through the bush you probably won't find much, but if you go to the naturally wetter areas that are gonna have better conditions for subs you'll find a lot more. If you're walking up a hill you want to be looking in the gullies or around the base of the hill. Final tip, wetter areas are usually greener. Good luck

Ahh, feels good to log in again and see some names I recognise. I've had my first finds of the year during a spur of the moment hunt. No cam at the time but I am still happy.
Love the finds everyone. Lets take care of our patches and reap the rewards for years to come.

this is my first year actually hunting iv been out a couple of times getting to know my local pine forest since it also has cattle through it i thought it would be a good place to start ive been searching for Psilocybe subaeruginosa but have'nt had any luck so far just wondering if they like early morning fog or not since we are already getting frost and mist in the mornings.
seems like the season is starting up early in other area's i personally hear from my friends not to go hunting til mid june, but in relation to tempreture those are pretty cold months, is that something Psilocybe subaeruginosa like? i have'nt really been able to find much on Psilocybe subaeruginosa hunting sorry if this is off topic.

Don't work off the calendar, mushrooms don't know how to read them.
It will vary depending on where you are hunting, there have been a lot of finds already, personally it has not been cold enough for the areas I hunt to start fruiting yet, I normally find that the season is still going strong for me when it starts drying up for some of those with the early finds though.
Pretty much from here on in, and paticularily as it starts to get colder, if it rains and you hunt shortly afterwords you should stand a pretty good chance.
On a side note cattle do not aid the growth of Psilocybe subaeruginosa they grow from wood debris, and leaf litter.

I picked those only because it was about to be very dry and it wouldn't have made it further, i made an effort to not pull out the root systems but rather cut it off.

Went for a hunt today. Found a new patch. My other patch only had one mature specimen, but had some nice new pins forming.
Found these>>>>>>>

Some of those were the biggest damn subs I have ever seen!!! Happy hunting
EDIT: Hmmm...anyone having trouble viewing those pics? When I clicked on them to check if the were working I get Quote:
This image has been deleted by its original poster.
They in my file manager and have not been deleted.

They are nicely sized specimens!
As for the pictures - once you click on them to expand the image, it says the image has been deleted by the original poster.
So we can see the previews but cannot expand them

Yeah, not sure what the story is? I will try and fix it as you need to view the full image to get a decent idea of the actual size.
Had no trouble with the pics last time I posted them

Went out for a hunt today and got my first finds for the season

A pin

My mate borrowed my dehydrator over the summer and I found a nice surprise inside when I took it out of the box to dry the subs - 6 grams of cubes...

Must have been my lucky day - found a fin that had washed up on the beach this afternoon as well:

Went out today to some area's that I am familiar with and where I would normally find 40 subs... I found 2.
All the area's around here are starting to get really over picked, every time I'm wondering through the bush I see groups of teenagers, often 10 or more wondering through with bags. What really sucks though is watching them pick. They kick up the ground destroying all the mycelium so they can bring any uncovered pins to the surface for harvesting, every minute or so walking I see kicked up, overturned ground and mycelium everywhere where pickers have obviously been.
What the hell happened to flick, pinch and pick? most of my time I spend out at my spots is not actually harvesting, but covering any patch of pins up with leaves so hopefully they don't destroyed by awful people.
A question as well. I try to rebury the mycelium and I was wondering if that actually helps or if once it's all been kicked up and shredded it's beyond saving?

No, it is perfectly good still. Mix it with fresh wood chips and add water.

Pins are on the surface to begin with, this makes no sense. Have you actually seen people doing this?

I think the karo would be likely to encourage mold.
The good thing about wood chips is that not too many fungi will eat them. Just woodlovers. Anything will eat sugar.

Awesome, at least my efforts are not to waste though.
Really awful seeing the huge amount of trash around my of my usual spots now though. bottles, bongs, plastic bags, chip packets and other crap everywhere.
Quote:

I know, but I've found for the past few weeks they have been heading out in huge groups, at the entrance to part of the Namadgi national park that is a popular sub picking spot (shrooms even spray painted on the sign) you will often see 5+ P plate cars at any point on the weekend. When driving back today (probably like 11:00am) me and my friend passed probably around 3 P plate cars on that dirt road filled with people.
Quote:

People kick the ground up to uncover pins that could be covered by leaves and such, it's easier to do than just move the stuff with your hand I guess and yep, seen people do this.
Quote:

Nope, area's been fruiting for a good month now, I don't really pick much so I leave most of what I find behind, so really it should be no effort for me to find stuff out there.
Honestly it wouldn't bother me that much, but area's that I have kept secret and I thought would be out of the way (not namadgi btw)are now being hit and trashed everywhere. Kiddies are out in force this season, maybe someone posted a detailed guide on 4/20chan or reddit or something.

Yeah it does suck. I think it's probably for the best just to remind people how to actually pick mushrooms and tell people off for not picking up after themselves with trash.
Insane how many kids I have seen out this season though, you would never think you will run into many people while stumbling through the bush off the paths, but holy damn this season it's been packed.
No wonder the gates are closed now for the roads through the park and park rangers seem to be out and about far more in force than usual. (had a fun experience of one basically stalking me for a while before giving up and just heading back to his car)
What powers do PR's have anyway? I hear from some people they have nothing and can't do crap, I hear from other's they are fully fledged authorized officers and actually can search you and basically have the powers of police if you are on National Forest land. Anyone in the know?

Happens fairly regular with pig hunters.

Not much out at the moment. Went hunting today and had to bush bash to find a small handful of subs. Been fairly dry so far this season.
Found some colourful O. nidiformis though. Took some pics with ye olde iphone for anyone interested. Didnt glow as nicely as the last ones though..

i feel you on the rape and pillage missions some set out on, however im still only 21 and i have a huge amount of respect for nauture and patches and have all my life including my teenage years of picking and most i know are pretty good at not trashing places. also its not just teens doing this, ihave heard of and even seen for my self older people doing just this but i would say that the malority of people would be teenagers.

Todays effort.

Also snapped some pics of what looks like Gymnopilus junonius growing from a dead stump. There were some massive ones but my phone ran out of battery, which was annoying as I wanted to get some pics of the subs in situ. Maybe next time.

Thanks guys. Was pretty satisfied with that haul. My patches are naturally very moist and don't seem to need too much precipitation. Pretty keen to see what they are going to be like after we get a bit, been some heavy dews so I attribute it to that, good min temps and decent microclimate. Found another very small patch which was very dry, but had a couple of mature specimens and a few pins, very dry substrate. I reckon that new spot is going to be very productive given the right conditions. Just a waiting game really.
They are definitely out there. Just finding the right microclimate and putting in the hours I guess. Hoping everyone else has some better luck soon. This thread needs more sub love

Cheers Everyone, Have read all the hunting threads and love the site! thanks to all who have shared the love!
Any info would be much appreciated!
...also... im struggling to figure out how to add an avantar pic to my profile?

Just nice to be reassured when Ive only got myself and shroomery to learn from. Will be drying this lot and making a nice tea on a lazy weekend
Cant wait to get back out there next week, If I find more ill keep posting the Habitat pics

Hi everyone, Wow, very nice.. Lavo, I'm not sure if this is ok to ask, but which side of the mountains was that haul on?, because its been pretty dry in the mountains and further west, I'd be interested to see if there's still sub action up there...
Out where I am, the pine forests are bursting with amanitas, I picked a couple, but after some research, I dont think I want that ride...

Pretty sure i cant say, but if you go far enough into any of the mountain areas round ACT and follow trails where there is a reasonable amount of moisture you should be fine.
I find most mine in Eucalypt forests.
I check different areas in the hopes of finding more spots. and at the worst its a great day out bushwalking.

So far I've found a look alike that is also edible...any slippery jack connoisseurs out there? Any info would be much appreciated!

giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their

Thanks. I am loving my patches so far. I keep finding new patches, or rather extensions of existing patches, I suppose. They just keep giving and giving. Have had a lot of luck this season. Hopefully this luck will continue for this season and the next and the next etc. etc. I plan to maintain these patches as my first patch isn't fruiting quite as much as the ones in the pics. Need to give them some tasty wood to eat as it's a bit thin. I think patch #1 would have been fruiting like crazy last season, but it has eaten a lot of the woody material. Alas, I wasn't aware of it until this season. Probably not so bad, as it seems like the spores have spread nicely around the area.
Yes, they are quite recent finds Shroomtron

Bummer lotg. I tend to keep my patches very secret. No one except me seems to know about them as of yet and I am really hoping it stays that way. The reason I can tell is the subs grow to full maturity and then some rot. I don't think this would be the case if they were known patches. I really hope they stay secret as I would be pretty upset if n00bs started picking these patches and not practising proper harvesting techniques. I wouldn't mind so much if they were harvested properly and in a courteous manner. Also maintaining a patch is vital. I find a lot of n00bs just don't care.
On some level, I am still a n00b, but I have the utmost reverence for nature and all her myriad ecosystems and have taken the time to understand about many aspects of this very special mushroom.
So these patches will remain secret knowledge for now.

Went out for a hunt today, I have started trying out a new hunting strategy this year by bringing my dog along for a hunt. It is a definitive positive in relation to not looking dodgy walking along the road looking at the ground. There are also negatives though as I discovered today when a dog came off a farm with noone else around nearly staring a war. Also it is hard to get him to sit still when I find a patch.
Majority of the finds were in the long grass by the side of the road, with nothing happening at the main patch.
Enjoy:

I agree the NSW season is starting out slow, maybe down to the shortage of rain, hopefully June and July will make for it though.

Does anyone know if there is any control of psychoactive mushrooms in Australia in the form of deharvesting eg. Botanic gardens and highly populated nature reserves? Just curious as to how many people are out there apart from the mycophiles who post here. Some posts infer there used to be heaps of mushrooms "back in the day" . Do long term shroomers think there is a decrease in numbers out there? Thanks in advance......

i dont know about NSW but here in SA things in the forests were very different to today mainly through logging and people on their "rape and pillage" missions and not enough people spreading spores. hope this answers your question
