CHESTERFIELD, Va. --
Last year "Spice," a synthetic marijuana-like drug, was in the news for its appeal to teens who could buy it over the counter or online.
Today it's 25i, 4-FA, MXE, GBL, bath salts and other so-called designer drugs that are below the radar of most adults but familiar to adolescents and teens, who are experimenting with them to their peril.
"Two weeks ago, I got scared," said psychotherapist Richard Grosse at a drug awareness seminar Sunday at Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian.
"The kids I'm working with are telling me about drugs I've never heard of," he said.
About 300 people, most of them parents, filled the chapel for the seminar held just weeks after a drug bust in the Charter Colony neighborhood resulted in arrests of more than 30 teens.
Police charged 23 juveniles and nine teens age 18 or older with either alcohol, curfew or drug violations in the incident, which generated complaints about a fight at a house party at a residence in the 1400 block of Gravatt Way. Police obtained a search warrant and recovered a glass smoking pipe and a bag of marijuana.
"There's a bunch of that (25i) stuff in our county now," said Grosse, of Dominion Behavioral Healthcare of Chesterfield.
"It's flowing into our county, and kids are taking it," he said.
Grosse, who counsels adolescents, said he was so worried he wrote a letter to principals, police and judges two weeks ago to alert them to the growing problem of the designer drugs. The drugs, he said, are cheap, and there's not a lot of data on them.
The seminar was organized by the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad and included a presentation by SAFE Inc., a nonprofit, substance abuse prevention organization in Chesterfield County
Some of the drugs are as cheap as $5, Grosse said.
Those who are using the drugs are putting themselves at serious risk.
Jennifer Reese, a paramedic and supervisor with the Richmond Ambulance Authority, described a case in which emergency crews responded to a call in Richmond in which five people 14 to 18 years old had taken 25i.
"That was the first time we saw 25i," Reese said. She said the teens exhibited different effects from taking the drug. The most serious was a young person who developed seizures that did not respond to the medications they would typically give on a call to someone in that state. "This is bad stuff and it is very scary," said Reese, referring to 25i.
"We are hearing about it in Virginia Beach … Powhatan (County)," she said.
Parents were advised to pay attention to behavioral changes in their children and to check their Facebook postings.
"I have a sophomore at James River High School," said Kathy Welling, who was at the seminar. "It was very informative to see that there are a lot of parents interested in the same things that I am and trying to come up with a solution to prevent this from going through the schools."

My god, the irony....
They want to keep the kids safe, but they have already banned the most non-lethal drug on the planet (thc), and its banning likely has stirred more interest in designer drugs.
They don't even realize that these "actions" that they take make for a more "dangerous" drug scene. If they would let the kids smoke cannabis, I bet you designer drug use would decline across the board.

25I-NBOMe a 2C-series analog almost as potent as LSD with somewhat similar effects, the problem is you can buy it as pure powder so imagine giving kids pure powdered LSD
damn tools ruining it for everyone

Supposedly, but I don't even know why they included it in this list: it's scheduled in both the US and the UK.

And so it begins. History repeating itself. Uninformed, underage users ---> demonizing and propaganda media blitz ---> MORE attention, more use, and more problems ----> more war on drugs.
Same old same old.

I'm guessing Virginia looks to be the first state with bills banning 25i, mxe, and 4-fa.

I live in midlothian. (Richmond, close enough.) I was at that party for a short amount of time. (to make money ) I had that Richard guy as my therapists today. (see my thread) I know the guy who had seizures and died. He took alcohol, pot, 25i, Xanax and hydrocodone.
25i really is everywhere. Why are the kids taking it? I'll tell you.
They got put on probation for smoking pot(every teen here is being arrested, were called arrest afield) so they advanced to harder drugs that don't stay in your system as long.
As well as people selling pills of it that are EIGHT times the doses and the kids getting sold the pills don't know any better so they consume the entire pill.
Also, watch for a story of a kid getting arrested with $3000 worth of 25i.
How do we stop this? Legalize pot and stop arresting these kids and they won't advance to those drugs. Simple.

If you don't want to ruin your reputation as a vendor, you would likely stop selling it too. I know I would.

I've never met anyone in person who knew anything about RCs so I really doubt it's as dramatic as they are making it.

I've never met anyone in person who had ever done ketamine... Is it really that bad? Yes it is. I have had a few grams of different benzos, and have seen people get way goofy for a day or two after unknowingly doing 20-30mg of pure xanax and not wake up not remembering the last 72 hours.
Oh and my favorite factoid, LSD is a RC, not occurring naturally in nature...

You say that now, but when buying 25i freebase for $10/gram in bulk and complexing it yourself. Then selling it for $100/g for the freebase or $180/g for the hcl its hard to stop... I did hear from a vendor that some big time laboratories liquidated all of there nbome's about a month ago. He didn't get any because he figures if someone else doesn't want it why would he. I have seen the freebase from other reputable vendors for less than $50 a gram. ...Avoiding vendor/price discussion... I like you have to say no. I would get 10g and make 10,000+ blotters or geltabs or whatever I wanted. lol. Then I would go to prison again... /life

Are you kidding me? 25i was discovered at a university in Germany a few years ago, its not like the synth popped up on the streets or something. Dave Nichols took up studying it at Purdue well before it hit the "market" scene.
Just like LSD eh ? Just because we have been eating LSD for 40+ years does not make it any less of an RC than any other RC
