They are slightly lighter. Other than that, unless you're riding in a velodrome, it's mostly an aesthetic thing, whether you're into the 'purity' of a bare-bones ride, or simply investing in a very pricey fashion accessory.

I like the idea of salvaging an ancient butted steel frame and making a high-performance ride out of it, but all of the store-bought designer bikes are far too Hot Topic for me.

No. BMXs cannot pedal backwards generally. You can go backwards if you backpedal, but you can't actually drive the bike backwards.

I see them doing tricks on the pavement at my college all the time. Riding backwards on the handlebars and other shit like that. Not BMX style, those are smaller bikes I know.

The idea is that you tune your bike your optimal rpm/speed combo, and maintain that while you're riding. 90-110rpm for competitive cyclists, less if you have other goals (like not getting pancaked by a truck on the road). You struggle a bit to get to this rpm/speed, but once you're there its an efficient ride. In addition, you're not tempted to dog it in lower gears.
There's also the argument that it's less weight, because you don't have to carry a derailleur, a bunch of metal gears, and associated hardware.
The physiology of hard riding: http://www.johnforester.com/Articles/Cycling/Physiology.htm

You can test it out with a normal bike that has a bunch of gears. Shift up to a normal riding speed, and then don't downshift when you have to slow down/stop. See if you like it. Obviously you'll struggle to start up again--especially if you're on an uphill--but at the same time this will push you to ride harder.
Competitive cyclists use these bikes on tracks.
They're also very hipster. Check out these handsome and colorful bike chains:
