I recently bought a new camera so I went out today to see if I could find any mushrooms to photograph. I'm still getting used to using the camera and it's my first DSLR (Canon EOS 1100D).

Seems like you'll be taking some awesome pictures from here on out. Getting a new camera is exciting. I got a new one at the end of the mushroom season last year. I can't wait to get out this year and use it.
Those pics are pretty good for your first attempts

Don'tcha just love getting a new camera? Your photos with your old camera were beautiful, so I can't wait to see what you dial up for us now! Are you manually focusing or using the autofocus? With macro shots on DSLRs it may be useful to manually focus to ensure you get the shot.
That photo of the ram is so majestic! I like it a lot.

oh yes, good advice. Also, I can't tell you enough what manual white balance and manual field depth settings will do for you. I thank Alan and Koraks for their help learning how to use those features in our photography thread.

For the manual white balance, get a piece of white paper, set it where you are taking pics, point the camera at it and set the white balance. Then take pics as you would, its useful for indoor pictures. I'm not sure for the other, I don't think my camera has anything called that.

Oh, just turn your av setting to a higher number, it brings more of the picture into focus, but also makes it more prone to camera shake. A tripod or flash can help with that.

I'm not sure exactly but my girlfriend is saying that they are Dock plants (Rumex). I don't know anything about plants but these looked interesting and lots of garlic grows around here so I was hoping that it would be something like that!

Thanks! I'm using autofocus for now, I tried manual but couldn't get it just right although with the AF on whenever I got it as I wanted it the camera wouldn't let me take the picture so I'm going to try and use manual more.

I haven't messed with white balance yet but I really need to. For field depth there's a semi-automatic mode on my camera that allows me to set 'background blur' but I like the effects that can be achieved by altering the depth of field. I'm going to try and set as many settings manually as I can, I guess that's the whole point of a DSLR.
I've downloaded some photography courses to learn the basics, I'm also learning how to use Adobe photoshop lightroom.
I've read that turning the camera lens around makes it function as a macro lens, I'm not sure if it actually works but I've ordered a reversing ring to test it out.
I can also now buy an adapter to take pictures with my microscope .

A DSLR, exciting! I love getting new cameras, even if each one is a little different and takes a bit to get used to. Just spending time with it outside and experimenting with the settings will give you a good feel for it.
You did a great job with the focus on the plant pictures where the foreground & background are defocused but the subject is sharp.
Are you shooting JPG or RAW? Because if you shoot in RAW then you can always change the white balance afterward in Lightroom, plus you have flexibility adjusting the exposure in post. Btw, Lightroom is awesome. I've been using it for awhile and I love it.

I've set my camera to RAW plus large JPG for every picture. In my lightroom tutorial I'm just up to the bit about white balance.
I like pictures where the foreground and background are defocused but the subject is sharp, that's the sort of effect I was going for, I also tried it with number 4 (the second picture).

I usually have to fake the shallow depth of field by using the extreme telephoto end of my zoom. But you've got it built right in. Lucky!! Speaking of lucky though, if any of you have Canon point-and-shoots then I encourage you to check out CHDK. It took my camera from fun to super fun!

Yes- It's called the Nine Ladies stone circle and it's located on Stanton Moor. There are quite a few other stone circles in this area as well. It's one of my most favourite places anywhere.
The countryside in this part of the county is amazing but I think that the High Peak part of the Peak District is even more spectacular, it's one of the reasons why I got a new camera.

That is a great camera. What kind of lens are you using?
Some of those pics could use a smaller aperture, I usually shoot mushrooms at f11 through f20.
There isn't a lot of color saturation, turning on the flash and setting it to extremely low (around -2) would help with that, while still letting in a lot of natural light.
I usually shoot in Manual mode with manual focus, iso set kind of low, exposure around 1/60, and flash on but not very strong.
Some of your pics have blades of grass in front of the mushrooms. Spending 20 seconds taking away stuff like that will save you a lot of time in photoshop later.

Beautiful area! That is definitely a reason to invest in a camera. Would love to visit there someday. I've been to Ireland once and these pictures remind me of the quaint rolling hills and crumbling ruins scattered around. Awesome.
Unfortunately my camera doesn't allow me to turn the flash intensity down as much as I'd like. It's super bright. I'm thinking of trying out a separate flash, as it's nice to have the light source off the camera anyway. But it's an extra piece of equipment to carry around.

You can cover the flash with something translucent. Paper is good. Sometimes I use my finger but that can add unwanted reddish tones.

The one that came with the camera.
I finally got around to trying out the manual mode, I took some pictures through my microscope- it's actually easier than using automatic mode...the pictures in the end came out better because I also adjusted my microscope (I didn't edit out the stuff in the pictures that shouldn't be there).
Agaricus bisporus:

1 = f 5.6 ISO 3200 55mm. 2 = 1/125 sec @ f / 5.6, ISO 6400 37mm. 3 = 1/125 sec @ f / 5.6 ISO 6400 44mm. 4 - 9 = 1/125 sec @ f / 5.6 ISO 6400 55mm. 10 - 13 = 1/125 sec @ f / 5.6 ISO 6400 53mm.

Of course you can! I'll upload you the bigger file when I get back from work later.
pictures 6-17 were taken insde an Iron Age hill-fort, the next 10 pictures are from the walk to Higger Tor and pictures taken from up the top. The woods in the picture I didn't even know was there so I must go back one day to check them out.
There's also a stone circle on the moor as well.

Yes the next season may now come as I've found some new endless perfect lib habitats...by then I should have some good macro skills as well I hope.
On my way home tonight I saw something like a fireball falling through the sky to earth, I think that it may have been a Meteor- Now I wish I also had a telescope to take pictures from, this new camera is certainly making me think of all of the great things I can capture.
Funny though how a lot of this first stemmed from my desire to find mushrooms and learn about them, I appreciate nature a lot more now than I did before mushroom hunting .
I still have so much to learn.

Last set of pictures for this thread I promise! Maybe we should have some kind of photography forum for posting non-mushroom albums in etc (and photography talk in general).
I had a car crash on my way to work today, got caught in a sleet storm and went over the edge (the police said that it was a 90-100 foot drop but not sure about that), the car was in the air and as it was heading down I thought that I had a chance of dying but I didn't die so I took some pictures instead.

I have whiplash, my girfriend's is a bit worse as she was driving, my neck is slightly sore but nothing major, the hospital have given me painkillers anyway.
The road itself is normally classed as being the most dangerous road in the UK but I have to use it a lot, it has some stunning views and potential mushroom fields everywhere.
I'm not sure how the weather changed so fast, a couple of days ago it was hot and sunny, the sleet fell really fast today which made us go over. I was surprised to see snow in March.
The feeling before impact is very absolute and final- this is it!
After making sure that my girlfriend was ok all I wanted to do was go outside and take pictures while we were waiting for the police and ambulance. After thinking that we might have died I really didn't care about very much apart from my girlfriend and trying to get some new photos (and also climbing up the sleet covered hillside), I also got the day off work which is always a bonus

I really don't care about the car (it's insured anyway), when I looked back at it (smoke was coming off it and we thought that it would blow up!) I didn't feel any loss for it. It's only a machine that can be replaced, it was less than two years old, I am amazed at how safe it was to plummet so far in a car and walk out in relatively good condition, the seat belts and airbags worked really well.
I haven't really had the classic 'let's appreciate every second of life and all it's beauty because it can come to an end at any time' revelation as I already knew it.
Today was quite trippy at times, I think that I want to do something more creative with my life like be a photographer or web designer or something.

So you came off the road, clipping the fence, and hitting the opposite river bank roughly head on then a 180 coming to a rest in the river?
Good on you for having air bags and wearing your belt Could have done a lot worse!

I took some pictures on my way home earlier from the shop (only edited 3 as I was tired):

We can see on the Owl statue that there are mushrooms growing, I didn't get close enough to see what they were.

I took quite a few pictures of that tree with the intention of editing them in different ways. I just loved the shape and features and the way it stood proud on the hill.
1) Original 2) First edit 3) Second edit

Other pictures taken recently (was testing out really high ISO):

And some of what I thought was a planet (but may just be a boring star):

Finally some mushroom related pictures (Oyster mycelium on card):

I'll post my non-mushroom pictures in a different forum after these so I don't clog up here. I have 7 days off work so expect more pictures

Hi HGF, those photo's are wonderful glad you are ok from the mishap there. Making me miss the countryside and fresh air. It is sometimes easy to forget it's there and beautiful all year round not just during actives' season. I can feel the downsides to not getting out and about for walks thats for sure. Great photo's thanks for sharing. I adore those lush green landscapes, I love the velvetty green grasslands. I think if I was out more I would still be looking for the odd out of season lib cap, lol

I've been missing the city, it's good to have both but now spring is here I'm going to make the most of being in the countryside...yeah I'm still keeping a look out for the libs and cincts
It's not long until the Calocybe gambosa start to come out, they are not active but very tasty...they are number one on my watch list at the moment.
Expects loads more pictures whatever I find, I walked home from work through the woods today and it has recently rained- I found an oyster mushroom (I never get bored of finding these) and a couple of others.
