This thread got me so excited to bike. I love it so much. I have a heavy old bike that is a slow and most of the gears don't work, but it is a tank. I also have a fixed gear that is light and so speedy. It's a blast to ride. I started getting flats every time I road it though. I need new tubes and maybe new tires.
I think I am going to ride a century this year, I have never really considered it but it sounds like a blast. Maybe I'll try to bike up to Duluth...
I've always wanted one of these: http://www.xtracycle.com/cargo-bicycles/xtracycle-compatible-bicycles/surly-big-dummy/big-dummy-configurable.html

For the fixed gear riders, is there some kind of utilitarian advantage beyond just low weight? I like a no derailleur setup but is a fixed gear "better" in some way than say a single speed with a coaster brake? Ideal for me would be a 3-speed with coaster brake. I believe there's also a Sturmey Archer 3-speed that behaves like a fixed gear.

My 2001 gt i-drive (not mine, that's what I have).

Upgrades to lots of XT parts. I bought it a decade ago when I was getting in to biking. I find it perfect for transport and for me, its perfect since I can use it on the road and go off when I want to.

I have so much bike skill (wheelies, endos, trails, general riding ability) but I have the shittiest bike ever, it skips on every gear like a whore and the front shocks have been demolished by my aggressive riding, the thing is a wreck and almost a death trap at this point, but I still ride it every day

Or in other words, 'why you ride track bike on street? coasting important advancement!'
I've been have a blast riding this year, I feel sorry for you icy states. I went for a ride along the canals in the rain the other day, got nice and muddy, was trying to power slide lol. And somehow managed to flat both tires (goats heads grr). I've been taking the full suspension out on some sweet jumps, man landing from anything is just cushy, fluffy, nothing dude. Its cool we have a park with a bmx track, practice jumps, a trials course, and just a bunch of trails crisscrossing the place (with a bunch of self made downhill drops...) Been hitting the road hard too. Pops got me a new voodoo frame to replace the Lemond I crashed... I found myself way out there on saturday, did 42 miles with a couple climbs in two an a half hours. My buddy wants to do a century, good thing I like pain.

Nice, we have the same bike. Mine is a 2001 gt i-drive race. Nearly the same bike except for a few differences in the frame and front suspension. They're really great bikes, I ride mine pretty hard through the mountains and she's never let me down.

I caught a guy trying to saw through my lock in DC. I was coming out of the Metro at Union Station and saw him huddled next to my bike. By the time I got there he was gone. He got about halfway through my kryptonite slinky lock, but it held just long enough.
That's why I bought one of these The fahgettaboutit. For little kleptos like you
Ironically, somebody stole my lock from me later on...
