Kindle? Good or Bad

I've been thinking of getting a kindle to read some downloaded textbooks. Has anyone used one? I am pretty much leaning towards the cheapest one so I can take it for a spin without investing too much coin. I don't need internet access or any of the bells and whistles. Color would be nice but it's not a necessity right now. Basically I would download a textbook in PDF and then usb it over to the kindle and read it. There's no copyright features preventing this right?

I bought my Pops one for his birthday.
I'd say it's definitely worth it. I mean after all the cheapest one is what, like barely 100 bucks?

I got one last year. It's invaluable for my long daily commutes. Plus with all my PDFs and the countless MOBI files I can find on the internet, I'm set for life.

http://z-issue.com/blog/index.php?/archives/278-Kindle...the-future-of-book-burning.html
Quote:
In June and July of 2009, Amazon.com removed a few titles (including Rand's The Fountainhead, and Orwell's 1984) from their Kindle Store, citing a seemingly noble cause of attempting to protect the intellectual property of the publishers (Manjoo, 2009). Though this action may be a disappointment to consumers wishing to purchase the respective eBooks, the removal of these titles is not, in itself, unethical, illegal, or cause for any type of alarm. However, Amazon.com took their supposed pursuit of nobility a step further and wirelessly connected to their customers' Kindle devices and removed their already-purchased copies of said titles. Not only did this action break their Terms of Service mentioned above, but it also brought digital censorship to a daunting new level.
Before digital copies of books, physical copies could be sold without any method of recovery. To clarify, when one purchases a book from a store (assuming cash is used instead of a cheque or credit card), there is no method for the vendor to attain information about that individual's identity, including his or her whereabouts. This means that if the book is recalled, banned by a government, or goes out of print the publishers, vendors, and law enforcement authorities have no hope in retrieving previously-sold copies of the book without the individual's consent. Thus, the individual would have complete ownership of the copy, and could do with it what he or she wills. Further, this lack of circulation tracking means that it is very likely that a printed copy of a work will exist somewhere in the world, even after publication has ceased. With Amazon's ability to track, modify, and even remove titles from Kindle devices, this 'complete removal from circulation' security is no longer present. In theory, a book that is distributed solely in electronic form could be tracked and completely eradicated from existence! What seemed at first to be a lovely convenience can also be seen as a surveillance tactic and, worse yet, a totalitarian approach to censorship.

That's pretty fucked up. I fail to see how that protects their copyright rights. Won't bother me though as the kindle touch does not have 3g. I would definitely be furious though if I was midread and they deleted my shit.

the kindle being sold for $100 (can't think of the model) has WiFi built in, but there's the option to turn it off.

Yeah. I don't intend to ever buy a book on it so I'll just keep it permanently off. I don't see it secretly connecting to nearby wifis.

I caved in once because I couldn't get the book from any of my sources. I went on my Kindle and used an invalid card. Amazon denied my payment but uploaded the book to my Kindle anyway. Made a thread about this a couple weeks back.

Yeah I remember seeing that. That is in part what has inspired me to think about getting one. Along with downloading a fuckton of chemistry textbooks.

Yeah Kindle's are very cool. And the cheaper one is actually better than the Kindle Touch coz its lighter and slimmer. I have used both models.
I bought one a few months ago and Im really glad I did. There is stacks of good sci-fi and popular fiction out there for dl. You only have to read 8-9 books and the Kindle's paid for itself, then its free books for ever

I made my own protective cover using a hardcover journal. Simply cut out the pages and used Velcro to mount the device inside. Screw paying $50 when you can DIY.

I used something like this. The elastic band is a must to keep the cover from opening on its own. Having one with a pocket file folder and a pen holder is a plus, but not essential.

I seem to be the only person on the planet that has a strong preference for e-ink, so I'd definitely look into a kindle.
I think I'd highly prefer the e-ink screen of the regular kindle, plus the battery life with e-ink is measured in weeks.

I have a plain jane kindle wireless and I love it. The books are cheap to reasonably priced and it takes twenty seconds to download. The battery lasts forever. You need a light to read it in the dark so I got a tiny clip on. It's great for camping, just download three or four books and go. It's worth it for sure!

get calibre. you can send your books to your kindle device with it but most importantly it converts file formats for you like EPUB to MOBI for example.

I love my kindle touch. Looks almost exactly like ink on paper. I don't like the color ones.

i'm wondering if any of you guys know of something like a kindle that's full color, touch screen that will read cbr/cbz files. i like the kindle fire but i couldn't care less about wifi and all that. i just want a tablet to read stuff on, including comic scans. the fire's like 200 bucks though.

The problem with color tablets is they are backlight which lots of people dont like reading.
I much prefer reading E-Ink. I had a Kindle but sold it for a Nook. They are both great, E-Ink FTW.

Yeah. For straight text I'd go black and white.
Color would allow magazine content and some other things.
I have to read off a monitor for hours on end and it sucks...
