Was having a BBQ and beers in the backyard with a couple of mates and I spotted this in the garden. There are two plants in total, but the one pictured below is the largest.

Is this Papaver somniferfum?

It's definitely a Papaver sp., probably somniferum. Can you get a pic of the flower from the center?

Nice. I live in Tasmania, so that would make sense.
Are these any good for pod tea?

I don't see any pods, bro. I see one opened flower and two unopened ones. Patience is your ally.

I recall reading that Tasmanian poppies have a higher content of Thebaine, so does that mean more pods are needed as opposed to other species?

Excellent, that is good to hear.
Is that first new picture I posted a pod, or just another unopened flower?
I can see I'm going to have to do a lot of research before I attempt anything with it.

It is a pod. You can see the petals on the ground. Listen to KGB about the ripeness of the pods though. I've never grown them.

I will watch it carefully over the next couple of weeks and add more pictures. Hopefully someone will be able to tell me when it's ready to be harvested, as I have no idea myself.

well, when I grew them,I never harvested anything from them, but I could always tell when they would have been ready to go,because they will be big and swollen, have a bluish appearance ,and the crown will be raised straight up.

It looks like a Papaver Somniferum, but there's a fair chance that it is a Papaver Setigerum. Its definatly a somniferum, the pods gave it away.
Dont worry about them having a heap of thebaine, they should be fine. I think the the rumor of the plants having a high level of thebaine is bullshit, but really i dont know. I grew a few Tasmanian poppys a while back and the pods were really potent, i couldn't feel the typical effects of thebaine from the pods.
If there is one plant, there has to be more! Scout around a little, try to find some more plants
Also you shouldn't attempt to milk the pods, you dont have many plants so your best bet is to just wait until they mature and make tea

The Thebain poppy is 100 percent real. It's been breed for the Hi Thebaine content for the pharmaceutical industry, for the manufacture of hydrocodone, acetyldihydrocodeine, oxycodone, and oxymorphone. The seeds aren't available to the public,so you have no worries mate

There are two immature pods on it now, and another two more flowers have opened up, and there is another 4 unopened ones I can see.
Will it continue to flower all through summer? Or will it die once I've picked the pods?

Be careful with these. If the pods produce bright pink latex they'll definitely be the high thebaine producing Norman strain.
White latex and you'll be all good.
I got thebaine poisoning a few weeks back and was not good at all man.

Yeah I have also with other strains. But with tasalk poppies it either comes out pretty much white in the morphine variety and BRIGHT pink/orange with the thebaine type. The taste is also quite astringent/bitter.

I have driven past the poppy fields once , but I was in the car with my mum, so I couldn't really ask her to pull over so I could grab a couple.
They're about a 30 - 40 minute drive from the city, but the fields stretch on and on and on. They are only separated from the road by a small wire fence, plus it's in the middle of no where so there's very little chance of being caught. I think I recall reading that it's the largest medicinal poppy field in the world.

I have a total of 6 pods on there now, and it looks like there's still maybe 2 or 3 flowers yet to come. I'll add a couple of pictures on the weekend.
The larger pods have a sort of white powdery coating that rubs off onto my fingers if i touch them.
I know the potency varies from plant to plant, but on average how many pods would be needed for someone with no tolerance to get a nice feeling?

Start with three pods, that should be a good dose. Just drink it slowly and wait for effects in case those pods are real potent. Then next time add as many pods as you think you need

Ok cool, should have enough to split between three people then.
When I'm ready to harvest the pods do I take the stem with them, or is there no alkaloids in the stem?

FUCK!!! Since all the petals have dropped off mum has cut down the plant.
I managed to find 4 of the pods, and one flower. I'm not sure if they're any good though.

There are also two smaller ones, but they don't have the white sort of coating like these 3.

Yeah I got no problem eating them. I prefer to eat my mushrooms than make tea with them anyway.
Should I eat slowly, or will it be a fairly low dose either way? And what about the thebaine, will it be an issue or not?

I myself, when I did do poppy pods, ate fresh pods all the time, seeds and all. It's very disgusting, and bitter though, and it takes work to keep it down.I just chewed em up thoroughly, and was em down with some kind of liquid,I used beer:-)Stems have a lot of alkaloids in them too,so eat them as well.

Alright, cheers for all the info. I will have breakfast in a minute, then eat nothing for 4 hours or so, then I will munch down the pods and stems and hopefully have a good time.
I was just reading that morphine can make you feel unwell as it's kicking in. I have done doses of 240mg of codeine before, and felt no adverse effects, and from what I remember codeine converts to morphine in your body.
Roughly how comparable do you think the 5 pods I have will be to 240mg of codeine? And if I do feel sick, is it best to try and keep it down, or let it out?

If you feel sick you can puke if you want but this could stop some of the morphine getting absorbed. If i feel sick i just lay down, and i feel fine. So if your already really high, and you feel really sick just puke and you'll feel better. 5 pods will feel alot better than codeine, 240mg isn't much at all. Pods are quite different in terms of the high. the euphoria will be alot stronger and you will feel less sick with a stronger high then you would with codeine
