So Rolling Stone voted Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist ever... i don't know if i agree. Hendrix is the shit, but i dunno if i just am not a huge Hendrix fan that i don't think he is...but whatever. I think Eric Clapton is up there right next to Jimi Hendrix. Anyways, what do you guys think?

Well...truthfully... Here's my personal ratings:
Hendrix Zappa Jeff Beck Page/Clapton (they are tied IMO) Omar Rodriguez-Lopez John Mclaughlin Frusciante Eddie Hazel SRV
Those are the ten guitarists I would bother to rate. I have other guitarists whose styles and playing I admire, but I picked those ten because I think they influenced my playing and musical taste more than any other guitarists yet.

my contribution is steve morse... steve is the only guitarist to win guitar player magazines guitar player of the year 5 years in a row at that point guitar player magazine made him ineligible from that point on to give someone else a shot... i read that issue, they literally said those exact words... he is also part of a small group who made it into guitar player magazine's "guitar player hall of fame"... i don't even know where to begin describing his career, the bands he's played, the studio work he's done for other artists albums... it's just mind blowing really... some of the bands he's played in are: the dixie dregs, the dregs, the steve morse band, kansas, deep purple, living loud, angelfire and al dimeola to name a few...
Steve Morse~~~Deep Purple~~~Solo
Steve Morse~~~Tumeni Notes~~~Live
Steve Morse Band~~~Name Dropping~~~Dave Larue on Bass(i play bass)

The most skilled guitar player ever is likely completely outside of the attention of the masses.
But realistically, there is probably isn't a "greatest guitar player". There are many greatly skilled with the instrument, and each one possess their own unique style. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference.
My favorite guitar player (at the moment) is Jonny Greenwood.

i disagree with you totally... there are guitarists and then there are virtuosos... keith richards is considered to be one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived... it was in a recent rolling stone magazine article... i think keith richards guitar playing sucks... literally... the only reason he's considered great is because he played in a band that made it... in my minds eye he's a better drunk and drug addict then he is a guitar player... just sayin'... there are virtuosos like i said and there are thousands of great recognized players and like you said there probably are players that will live in obscurity... but it's too new age to try and say everyone is equal because you'd be seriously deluding yourself... OP asked for the greatest, not someone's favorite... i put mine up there because he's considered the greatest among fans and amateur and semipro guitarists but more importantly his peers...

I think Jimmy Page is one of the greatest guitarists. I would post a video, but I will let you go to youtube and search "led zeppelin live". So great

Frank Zappa Duane Allman Clarence White Danny Gatton Jimi Hendrix
These are my top five, in no particular order. And they're all dead.
In my humble opinion, Clapton is over rated.

Unfortunately, all of these "greatest guitarist ever" ratings focus so heavily on blues-rock players. Not trying to bash anyone here, but put eric clapton in the jeff tain' watts quartet...think he has any idea what's going on? Last time I saw one of these lists, Wes Montgomery was down at like 30. As much as I don't like the idea of rating musicians, if you're gonna do it, don't put Clapton above Wes Montgomery. Common now.

obviously this is all subjective. The stuff in magazines has to do with who is a more popular household name, not really about who's a better player, or who is more innovative.
If you look at body of work, and range of composition, many players get kick out of the running pretty quickly.

I'm just saying that the most masterful players out there probably range from estranged humans who spend nearly every waking hour playing and rarely even leave their home, to old, obscured musicians playing for free on side walks around the world.
As far as recognition is concerned, I think Jimi Hendrix takes the cake.

It's an unfair question.
Currently Frank Zappa comes to mind. Prince is up there also, though his playing is often really understated in the compositions. Duane Allman, Robert Johnson and Stevie Ray Vaughn also stick out in my head at the time.

That Yngwie video was fucking hilarious. Such a tool. There's an amazing sound bit of him "unleashing the fucking fury" on a stewardess for accidentally spilling some water or something on him during a flight. But his style is so whack, and he's not even that good in the first place.
I think there are plenty of virtuosos out there. Picking one is a little silly in my opinion. I appreciate the mastery of the instrument but i usually feel no soul in their playing. I think you can only pick a greatest guitarist for one particular genre. The guy who influenced that style of playing.
Having said all that I'm not going to actually do that because that takes too long and I'm drunk and high and might whack off in a bit... My favorite guitarist is Jerry Garcia.

Well...Scott Pilgrim, Kim Pine, and the other dude in Sex-Bob-Ohm.
On the G3 theme, have Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Eric Johnson been mentioned yet? Vai is very similar to Zappa, but they are all virtuosos of the instrument and superb composers. And Vai can be forgiven for playing with 'White Snake'.
