Is 40,000-50,000 a year a good salary?
    #15406350 - 11/22/11 05:44 AM (1 year, 5 months ago)

Do you think that is good job money to live solid?  Good apartment and all the shit you need, etc......

I think I'm working toward a job with this kind of average salary.  To some it's probably nothing but I feel like it would be solid to have that kind of money anyway. Even though it's not even near $100,000 it still beats what a lot of other people might be making too.

Also on the plus side I'm not married and don't have kids so I don't really have much expenses besides when I get a job my main expenses will probably just be apartment, gas, and food ,etc......

I think so...I often wonder the same thing, key is not having kids.

Taking where you live into consideration matters. Prices on so many items/groceries/homes vary from state to state along with local salary averages.

My 29 yo sister makes 68k at Verizon Wireless as a supervisor w/ awesome benefits.

My brother makes a little over 50k a year for a water company w/ same benefits plus a company supplied gas card and cell phone.

One lives in Seattle though while the other lives north where it is cheaper to live and that alone will almost make up for that 18k difference.

Most the people around here make abour 12 bucks an hour. Before any taxes at full time thats 40 bucks short of 25k.

Hard to say what a good salary is when everyone has different living conditions.

likes someone has already posted, 50K could be a very cool starting salary depending where you live. what type of work do you expect to get?

50k realistically isnt something you wanna strive to make the rest of your life. starting its pretty decent but if you plan on having a family or a good retirement youll need to up the salary and like said before depends on where you live. 50k in new york isnt the same as 50k in idaho.

Entirely depends on where you live.

I think that for most people, their residence (rent, mortgage, etc.) is their largest expense.  This varies tremendously according to location.

Where I grew up, houses are about 80k.  You could easily live there on that salary.

Where I currently live, houses are 400k, so you couldn't live by yourself on that salary.

50k is a lot of money.  Its more than I will ever make, and more than most people can ever hope to make.

Yeah, if you're living by yourself or with your girl who's also bringing in income, that's not bad. If you have kids though, things will start to get tight.

Find a woman who is making the same amount of money and the two of you could be bringing in $100,000 a year combined.  That is a lot of mimosa hostilis, bridgesii, and shrooms.

I'm 6 years out of college and making 50k ATM.  I'm living pretty comfortably in a home I purchased last year.  As others have said above, I don't think I could support a child with my current income and still be comfortable, but I'm sure I could get by alright.  I'd just have to tighten up my budget a bit and cut down on some recreational activities...

If you had the cognitive capacity to read the thread, you'd know that "cost of living" makes all the difference.

Of course, this also explains why you only make 20k/year.

I'm curious where you would have to be living for 50k not to be an ample amount of cash.

I used to work 60hrs a week at minimum wage, 2 jobs, so no overtime, and I could support myself with cash to spare and save.

My buddy makes 20-30k and has 1 kid and one step-kid (his girlfriends kid) and he just bought his first house 30 minutes north of Atlanta.

If I ever make 50k a year I will be LIVING THE FUCKING LIFE.

Just look at the housing prices along any major city in the northeast corridor: DC, baltimore, philly, boston, NYC etc.

Even within a 40-45 min. radius you would be hard pressed to find any safe, decent housing for under 300k.

Single family homes are about 400k on my street, and that is VERY modest, VERY average living for homes built in the 1970's.

Like I said, cost of living makes all the difference.  I moved from a small city to a major one, and my rent tripled (literally) overnight from $500-1300/month.

My parents make around that much money and they are able to support me (and my brother) with no help while we go to school. We all live quite comfortably.

I think it really depends on how you spend it. The right investments can pay off massively. Get a financial adviser, put a good sum of money into the stock market, and get professional, impartial advice about the real-estate market before buying a house. And be frugal wherever possible. I would say $50,000 a year is a decent sum of money, but don't go and get rap-star syndrome and start buying extravagant bullshit you don't need.

50k is more than enough to raise a family on.  If you cant raise two kids and a spouse on 50k you are either spoiled or stupid.

Bare necessities with a few luxuries (internet, cell phones, cable, etc) is about a 10k/yr cost of living renting a nice house where I'm at.

I'd love pocketing 40k a year.
