Your money is going to a lot worse, and what does it take out of your paycheck anyway? Take a look at your next pay stub. I live in New York where taxes are one of the top 3 states for highest taxes, and on a paystab ( one of mine anyway from when I was making bank ) I was only paying in like 10$ to social security.
I hate to break it to you dude, but $2200/month is pretty awful. That's like $25k/year. And since you had no education getting that position, chances are you could never have gone up from that, or at least not far. You gotta be making at least like $50-60k/year without kids to be comfortable IMO.
It all depends on where you live. Rent here is only 650 for a 2 bedroom without section 8 projects/housing.
My mom only made 28k a year, and raised me and my sister on her own. Bills were rarely late, car payment was on time, food in the fridge, etc.
Does she own a house? Is she going to be able to retire at/before 65? Does she have ANY money saved up? The answer to these questions is almost certainly a resounding "no".
Not trying to hate on your mom or anything, I'm sure she did great for you guys with what she had, but you cannot actually expect to save any money on that kind of a salary with two kids.

Corperate welfar is foolish, as are things like corn subsidies. The other things like soc are important. That's what the government shoud do, because there is plenty, plenty rotting in the coffers of the very rich. It isn't all a money game, i's where it goes and why. Going to millions in Soc, it's hard to egulate and probably costs a ton to have all those shitty people go over every aspect of your shitty existance for a quarter of what it takes to live out of section 8. There arn't places here to live for under 500 a month rent. There are no jobs, this is Muskegon, swamp shit city. For what soc does, it is cheep. Growing up I was taught that welfare was bad, and those who took advantage were lazy people who were mostly immigrants. But what I saw in that office was mainly people who did need financial help of some sort. Not to mention the amount they are getting isnt shit. There is a VERY long and boring process even to apply, and as you can see they filter out the people who truly dont qualify.

I have mild OCD and a friend of mine has it much worse and we've never been known to keep tidy surroundings. In fact, his surroundings seem to be messier in direct proportion to how bad his OCD is - for example, he had a phase of being unable to flush toilet paper down the toilet. That was one disgusting bathroom.

She has about 4,000 in the bank I believe. She set up a 401k at 18 when she got a good enough job for one, so her expected retirement age is 56, and she has a mortgage on a house right now. 3 bedroom house for 80,000. ( Like I said.. it depends on where ya live brah. )

Budget man, while I lived with her (Until I was 16) she had a 3 bedroom apartment for 500 a month. Car payment on an olds for 129 a month. 400 dollars a month in groceries. Then y'know cable, internet, lights.
That's only about 1400 a month which leaves 800 a month left over for whatever else. ( Clothes for me and my sister, and what not )
and at 14 I had a job, and so did my sister. So we paid for own shit from 14+
It's all do-able.
