I didn't have any straw last month to make logs so I made up some sawdust blocks. Most likely this will be a one off for the time being since I now have a good supply of straw again.
All blocks are the same basic recipe with a varying amount of bran.
Here is what I used for 12 Blocks @ 24% bran:
12 L softwood fuel pellets 8 L wheat bran 1 L gypsum 20 L water
5L of substrate was loaded into Unicorn Type 14A bags and sterilized for 120 minutes @ 15 psi. I made 110 bags total.
King Oyster Pleurotus eryngii
This is the bulk of the run, 76 blocks total. Blocks were given around 1 month in the incubation room and then moved to fruiting. Pinning was present to a certain degree on some blocks, more on Strain B than A.
Strain A (7x) Aug. 7 32% bran 800 mL spawn (8x) Aug. 9 32% bran 800 mL spawn (1x) Aug. 19 24% bran 800 mL spawn (9x) Aug. 29 24% bran 400 mL spawn (8x) Aug. 31 24% bran 400 mL spawn (4x) Aug. 31 24% bran 200 mL spawn (6x) Sept. 1 24% bran 400 mL spawn
Strain B (11x) Aug. 17 24% bran 800 mL spawn (12x) Aug. 19 24% bran 800 mL spawn (10x) Aug. 19 24% bran 400 mL spawn
Reishi Ganoderma lucidum
First time growing Reishi.
This Reishi is a real madman. Mycelium grows very thick and vigorous. In the bag it grew up the sides and tried to escape out the top. In one bag the mycelium attached to the filter and started fruiting.
(10x) Sept. 1 5% bran 400 mL spawn
Black Poplar Agrocybe aegerita
The plan is to let the bags colonize until pins start forming, then move them to the fruiting room.
(5x) Sept. 1 24% bran 800 mL spawn (2x) Sept. 1 24% bran 400 mL spawn
Phoenix Oyster Pleurotus pulmonarius
The blocks made on Aug. 18 started fruiting int the bag. The blocks from Sept. 3 are still OK and ready to fruit.
(2x) Aug. 18 24% bran 800 mL spawn (2x) Sept. 3 5% bran 800 mL spawn
Shiitake Lentinula edodes
Still have a while to go on the Shiitake but I'm looking forward to seeing how these two new strains perform.
Night Velvet (Field & Forest) (6x) Sept. 4 5% bran 400 mL spawn

I agree. I need to improve on this front. I have the Shitake group buy to report on.
BTW, I have Black poplar, spawned to straight sawdust, colonizing right now. I will have to look this up, but I thought to ask if there are any special issues when fruiting this species. Is casing soil recommended?
Good luck. I look forward to good things.

Flies. They love it, brings them in from miles around! Tastes great though.
That is an impressive grow Grobo. Great documentation!

From my reading they can be grown with a casing or without.
Quote: NSF said: What temp do you keep your colonisation area at grobo? Also, any special method or equipment to keep it at that temp?
I try to keep it around 24°C (75°F). I have a baseboard heater for the winter and the house is airconditoined in the summer.

Where did you get the culture? I've ordered it from a few places, but still can't seem to get it shipped from any of them. RR
I also got mine in a trade.
Quote: flameclown said: How do you sterilize 110 bags?
12 at a time. I've got three All American's that do 4 bags each.
RR- I got my culture of black poplar from Sporeworks.com (liquid culture)
I had difficulty growing it out on agar, but what finally worked for me was to grow it out in a baby food jar with 1/4" agar in the bottom. No hole in the jar lid. I've had better luck in small jars with difficult species in general. I still can't grow lions mane worth a crap. I only get a small growth...
You've got so much going on here! I'm wondering about your kings, of course. Some of yours were pinning and some were not when you cut open the bags and initiated fruiting conditions, right? So, for the ones that did not have pins (none of mine have pins), how long did it take since you opened them up till definite pins formed?
