I don't disagree with anything from your last response. I just hope all those from that side of the fence see where I'm coming from. We don't need any more incarcerated people than we have. We also should not support idiots. But people will continue to make mistakes and I would rather see them built back up through the experience into better people, rather than torn down and their future destroyed.

I bet if the penalty was death for over a .2 a lot more people wouldn't get drunk and drive. A beer or two is nothing, but getting drunk deserves no sympathy.

such a polite officer, the McDonalds employee probably called them and said you've been passed out for 20 minutes in the drive through while waiting on a burger you never ordered... of course, eating McDonalds, I'd be concerned for your health too

Obviously the problem is driving at felony speeds and being a dumbass, not being drunk behind the wheel. The drunk drivers that go 5 mph aren't ever going to hurt anyone.

I say we raise the legal limit a bit and continue taking away people's licences for 6months+ if they do get caught.
But making the punishment harsher won't stop people from doing it. People don't commit crimes with the intention of getting caught. We've used death as a deterrent for murder and that doesn't even work.
Drunk driving is stupid but punishing people more won't really do much. The culture itself has to change and people need to A) be getting drunk less in general and B) not driving cars as much.

I agree. I didn't say incarcerate them. They should serve community service and have their licences revoked for a set amount of years. Drinking and driving is completely avoidable, so if you don't avoid it then you shouldn't be allowed on the road at all. Locking people up at all doesn't do anyone any good. The only people that should be behind bars are people that have hurt or want to hurt others deliberately. They need to be locked up to keep others safe from them. Taking someones licence should be the step right below being sent to jail for drinking and driving. Sure they should spend a week in jail right off the bat while waiting for their day in court, but right after that and taking their licence they should be free to go after agreeing to serving community service.
How about 10 years no licence, unless you serve a total of 2000 hours or more in community service and take alcohol classes until you pass them. You can either work twards getting your license back, or you can wait a decade.

We should also make alternatives more easily available. Taxi's are expensive. Sometimes when you get drunk at the bar, end up buying other people drinks, and just spend way more money than you intended, you can't afford a taxi. STFU with your argument about being responsible at the bar, this shit happens and will always happen. Public transportation shut's down at midnight (in my area) and the bars are open until 2:30 (does that make sense? no.). And for many people it is too far to walk home, not to mention you can get thrown in the drunk tank and cited for public intoxication on the way. Sometimes driving drunk is the most logical choice to someone who can't think logically. We need to provide more reliable alternatives for getting drunks home if we really want to stop drunk driving. Its a huge money maker though...

Why didn't you sleep in the car?
Its only illegal if you have the keys in the ignition. Keys in the ignition shows "intent to operate a motor vehicle."
If the keys are on the dash or in your pocket, and you are sleeping in the passenger side or back seat you are doing nothing wrong. If a cop gives you a hard time it will just be thrown out when you go to court.
Nope if your keys are with you, you can be found guilty of intent to DUI or whateverm. If anybody ever needs to sleep one off in their car, unlock doors, open door, go find a spot to hide your keys (outside the car) then go back inside the car.
What state?
Jersey has some of the toughest DUI laws in the country and you are allowed to sleep in the car.
I am 150% positive this is the law. Thats how my brother got out of a DUI.

What he said is true in Oregon. If the keys are in arm reach and you are in or around your car you can get DUI.

well let's see, locking them up, fining them, suspending their license and assigning community service all rolled into a single sentence hasnt stopped people from getting multiple DUIs why would stripping away the few days in jail work any better

We should force anyone with more than 6 DUIs to live or at least only drive in antarctica. Agreed? Worst case they end up in a crevasse and will stay warm with the drink

Well, if I were to be totally ideal about the situation and handle it my way I would say that cars are more the problem and not people drinking and driving.
People can't go 70mph on a horse and crash because they were too drunk to react.
If you drink and drive a bike you're not nearly as dangerous as behind a car.
And walking drunk is, mainly, just hilarious to watch.
Plus, as the car becomes more popular and more accessible the necessary distance between the places people go naturally will increase aswell, so driving becomes people's primary option in many cases.
In all honesty I think the combustion engine has caused more problems than it solved.

Don't blame the almighty combustion engine
It's the combination of cheap, easy to get energy (reason for our population) and inadequate road and vehicle safety designs. Cars could easily drive for us these days.

Really? I don't see how in any way, shape, or form what McDicks did was shitty. In fact, they did exactly the right thing IMO - glad to have another drunk driving scumbag off the roads.
That.
