hahaha. see. but still i have to say Entoloma because it was growing from the ground and not from wood.
so see maynard, you might be right, but if not you were definitely in the right ballpark

granular cap and overall look. some Leptonia have granular caps but this looks like a Pluteus

To me the gills look free rather than ceding, it looks like this, Pluteus granularis. I find granularis or a pluteus that looks a lot like it, in soil sometimes, that has some well rotted wood in it, same with Pluteus admirabilis, grows on soil enriched with rotted wood.

wel well this thread had quite a day. although i am still not really sure if we have nailed this.
Pluteus granularis is somewhat of a decent match. the stem on mine was not covered in those brown fibrils and it wasnt very thick.
as for buried wood? this garlic patch has been a garlic patch for 30 years , this soil has been composted the whole time and its really nice soil. no rocks, no wood for sure. but i could dig down but i dont want to disturb the area and would like to see another fruit this year.
like i said i have a print and a dry cap . so if anyones up for a micro challenge.
