going to have access to deprivation float tanks for 4 months

Just did my second float tonight.
*big sigh of relief*

And as it turns out, Alex Gray has floated in these same tanks, and possibly will be stopping by within the next week or so.

No - the tank is loaded with like a ton of epsom salts.

You have no other option than to float. There's about a half ton salt it a tank only slightly bigger than a bath tub.

What's do you have to say about them so far with your second float session ?

first words that comes to mind are complete relaxation.
This time when the gently piped in some classical orchestra tunes, my mind being very alert and clear took the cue of "ok, music started, time to hop out" But when it tried to communicate to my muscles, they were so relaxed it took a sec to make anything happen. and then it was as if I weighed twice as much as I do.
If you really had some mental sorting out to do, it would be a great atmosphere.
If you have an injury that is below the skin (obviously salt would hurt like a bitch if you had a cut) it would help ease pain, and maybe let bones/joints settle.
Everyone seems to walk out the door in a complete state of bliss.
This specific place has local tea/water for post float which is great, as well as fun little gadgets/toys to play with to kinda just hang out long enough to be able to drive home lol

I've always kind of hoped that I'd end up in some psychedelic study where they give me hallucinogenic drugs and put me in a tank like that...
That would be sweet!

apparently if you consume something that is sensory enhancing, if you get in a float tank which is sensory deprivation, it sobers you up within 20 minutes.

I would have thought it would be an experience more along the lines of spiritual psychedelic journeys.

I do not know how exactly to put it into words...probably because you cannot.
But there is something about pure clarity without thought that seems more fruitful than a psychedelic journey.
IMO Lots of people get different experiences with psychedelics. But the main point (again just IMO) is to see exactly who you are with utmost clairty, and to see/feel/know without knowing that EVERYTHING is just as much a part of you as who you really are.

Excellent description of floating:
So, basically you're in an oversized bathtub, that has 10 1/2 inches of water in it. And the water is super-saturated with epsom salts (850 lbs), so you float right on the surface (it's more buoyant than the dead sea).
And all the water is kept at skin temperature, so you can't tell where your body ends and the water begins.
And the rooms are really soundproof, and when you turn off the light on the inside of the tank, there's no light, no sound, so sense of touch, and no gravity on your body. And you just float there.
And it's like a mini-vacation.
-your spine stretches out an inch and a half -your muscles relax cause they're not fighting gravity -your brain stops producing as much cortisol (which is our stress hormone, responsible for fight/flight response) and instead starts cranking out dopamine and endorphins. And you get a natural mood high that lasts for about 2 to 3 days afterwards.

ah, i remember my first float experiences, after the session i would walk back out the door into the world, walking downtown like an inch above the pavement. makes me want to do it again, since this was a longer time ago, but it's expensive where i'm at. if it wasn't a wellness/spa trend like it is now and more people knew about it and it grew accepted on similar level as a sauna, i could afford doing it more often and then i would probably be making it a weekend ritual

Well shit, the only place around here is $75/float. I have some cash, but not enough to be blowing $75/hour.
-------------------- Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper he names of friends who were near?
What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream?
What does the sound of a screen door mean?
Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind?
How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church?
Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried.
Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does,
it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

prices range a lot per place.
at the place I work: $50 for 90 min $60 for 2 1/2 hours.
You cannot realistically float at home without a proper tank Although you could make a tank.

Psychedelic author D M Turner drowned when he tried to use a bathtub for similar use. Of course, this may or may not have happened if he hadn't injected ketamine as well.
I'd be careful with that.

This. I'd love to try it, but realistically many of us don't have that kind of cash to blow. And for those of us without that much cash to blow, I'd say it's probably equally unlikely we are growing weed and can offer that for trade. At least, I'm not. (And I would imagine anyone growing a bunch of good weed probably isn't super financially-strapped, either.)
I wonder if they'd let me barter with blowjobs. I suck a mean dick.
IDK if they even have any of these places in my neck of the woods. Probably not.

Hmm...theres one in Chicago thats supposedly rather nice. It's like $50 an hour. $115 for both a massage and a float. I'd probably be willing to pay it if I didn't have to take the train into chicago and back. Shits time-consuming yo.
-------------------- Men are born for games. Nothing else. Every child knows that play is nobler than work. He knows too that the worth or merit of a game is not inherent in the game itself but rather in the value of that which is put at hazard. Games of chance require a wager to have meaning at all. Games of sport involve the skill and strength of the opponents and the humiliation of defeat and the pride of victory are in themselves sufficient stake because they inhere in the worth of the principals and define them. But trial of chance or trial of worth all games aspire to the condition of war for here that which is wagered swallows up game, player, all. - The Judge

Music is only at the very end to signal that time is up. Else-wise is silent.

Well, sine this post has been made I am now a full time employee, so I can float whenever. In fact it is pretty nice to crawl in after a long shift.

I did my second float a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't feeling well and didn't get as much out of it as my first session. I actually think I fell asleep in there for a bit, . My friends gave me the session for my birthday though so that was nice. Once I'm feeling better I'll go again, it's a really cool thing. Super strange. It must be a damn interesting place to work.

ESPECIALLY in the middle of the night on Hawthorne in portland.
Check it out: 80% of people who think they "slept" actually do not. There mind slows down to a theta wave which is about actual sleep.
There is no time, there is no space, but there is still some raw awareness, if a loud noise were to happen you would "wake up" much quicker than if you were really sleep.
On the other hand, if you do it late at night, or do it for more than 2 hours there is a better chance of actually sleeping.
1 dude did it for 24 hours straight, I am sure he slept some of it

24 hours? Damn. Guys got some cash to throw around. I thought extended periods of time in a deprivation chamber was supposed to start causing massive amounts of anxiety and other psychological effects?
