Just because they aren't audible frequencies doesn't mean they don't effect the sound though.

I'm still rocking my four year old Bose Triports. I'm trying to save for a higher quality over ear pair since I've worn mine out.
edit: also trying to stop letting thoughts sneak into posts while my girlfriend is bitching, aha.

It's hard to really explain how inaudible frequencies effect music without hearing a before and after, but the inaudible low ends understandably give your music a bit more 'umph'. Inaudible high frequencies which are mainly made up of higher harmonics particularly cymbal overtones end up effecting the percieved placement of sounds within the pan when removed, as well as making the sounds somewhat thinner/less rich. Most of it is fairly subtle, but it is noticeable. There is a reason they make microphones with the ability to capture and reproduce sounds above and below the human thresholds of hearing.

It's not like I've never listened to a FLAC and then a VBR, I've just never noticed.

Make sure they aren't files that have been previously encoded - which is kinda hard to verify unless you ripped it yourself But like I said its pretty subtle - I've only been able to clearly notice the difference when played back through professional studio monitors.

I seriosly need to get myself a better pair. I currently just have this.

I know, cheap department store headphones. I prefer any and all "external" or "traditional" head phones to those "ear buds" or whatever the fuck they are that go straight into the ear. The sound on even the good quality versions of those internal headphones just is not to my liking at all. Not to mention completely uncomfortable. These ones actually aren't too bad for what they are worth. At times I've had some of the larger leather/rubber coated ones which block outside sound, provide better sound quality, etc. Been pretty broke lately - eventually I'd like to look into something more advanced. The ones I'm using now are on their last legs. They are cracked/broken on the left side. Only a matter of time before the sound stops working on one side. This is what always happens with the cheap ones in my experience. One side stops working.

can you really notice a difference between FLAC and 320 mp3?
Yeah, Mp3's no matter what the rate are still Mp3's and that means practically every extremely high and extremely low frequency has been cut, fuck that.
Yeah, if you have decent enough hardware the difference can be pretty substantial. I mean I doubt the average joe would notice, but if you appreciate good sound you'll find its worthwhile. It's nice to finally see flac taking off on the internets I recall having a harder time finding it before.
Then there are awesome bands like Nine Inch Nails that release their albums digitally and offer flac copies. You can download their album The Slip here for free in any number of formats, and they even offer it in one even higher quality than FLAC.
