Feature Request: Post quality rating system
    #13667498 - 12/21/10 09:16 PM (2 years, 4 months ago)

To cut down on the trolling and overall BS, implement a quality rating. It could be 5 shrooms with the other two rows of shrooms which would indicate a quality of the users posts. There wouldn't be any text associated with the rating, just a number. Every post that a user makes would have an icon (next to the + on the subject bar) which would generate a dropdown where readers could give each and every post a one through five shrooms rating for quality. The shroom bar under the poster's username would show the average.
The one problem I can see is the tracking for each and every post for each reader. To avoid having to keep up with which post have been rated, a limit could be put in place so that the reader would start the day with the ability to rate, say 50 posts, and unable to rate the same post more than once.

I could see this being good. Of course this would have to be set up so that you can't rate unless you have been a member for at least so many days, much like the user ratings.

noobs, LOL.

This has been done before, more or less.  Trolls gonna troll, they'll just use the rating system against you if you try to do that sort of thing.

That's probably true. Can't win with trolls.

There has to be a way to make the trolls / negative people invisible. The number of ratings someone could give could be based on the number of high quality post that users make.

Personally, I think you should grow thicker skin, but if you must shelter yourself from anything negative, try the ignore function.  You can essentially block yourself off from a great deal of Shroomery users that you deem unfit.

Like many discussion boards, this one does have an ignore feature.

You make too many assumptions Army boy. I do have thick skin. I'm not trying to shelter myself but improve the quality of the boards. People will have to make a decision before they click submit. I don't want block off people, I want to discourage the negativity. It seems like such a waste of time.

I'm not trying to implement a feature to ignore users. I want people to think about what they are posting before they hit submit. I believe posters should take their long term memberships seriously.

You want to make people invisible.
But not ignore them.
You want people to think about what you expect from the before they post.
But you want them to post it.
So you can remove it.

You want people to think about long-term commitment, you've been here a few months.

You might, just maybe, be taking this whole Internet thing too seriously.

Get a life.

That.

perhaps every post made to the shroomery should have to go through a pre-screening process in which you have to approve it before its posted. that way you can ensure the shroomery meets your quality standards.

and the ratings are already weighed--so that people who give many zeros or many 5's don't have their ratings count as much.

No, I don't want to make people invisible - I shouldn't have stated that. I should have typed that I want to make useless / negative post disappear. I don't want to put people on ignore because then I would miss good information that they provide, I simply want to allow people to rate post - good and bad - to make the good ones' shine and make the bad ones' occur less often.
I don't want anyone think about what I expect from them - I want them to think about what the boards as a whole expect from them - hence a quality rating system. I don't want people to post something just to have it removed - I would like it if the nonsense wasn't posted at all.

Maybe I am getting a little thin-skinned....

So you don't want people to be invisible, you just want people to conform to your idea of right and wrong, good and bad.

Pretty sad.

Basically an extension of the 'forced groupthink' which goes with ratings.

Conform or be cast out, as the saying goes.

Not just my idea of good and bad - the board's idea of good and bad. A collective decision. The new five shroom would represent the average quality of the users posts which is decided by each reader.

No one would be cast out, people can say what they want. If someone wants to rant and make worthless post then they would most likely have a low quality rating associated with their username. If they make useful post then they will most likely have a high quality rating.

Reap what you sow.

All hail the collective!

Bad conformist! No diversity for you.

There would be plenty of diversity - you are going to an extreme. The only difference is that there would be a user rating system which would indicate the quality of people's post.
