so earlier today i was "pulled over" by the po po
they ran my plates and they came up wrong i didnt have my dl
b4 they pulled up my bud grabedd his safe in my trunk and left it open
the police said they where questioning me about a robbery that had taken place
when the cop saw my trunk was popped he imediatly opened in and asked whose safe it was
i said idk it might be my moms it was my buddys eventually they found out i lied and i said to ask my friend whose safe it was
keep in mind they think i stole the safe
the safe contains mids trips and the worst of all funny bills
they impounded the safe
my question is can the cops open the safe if my friend does not produce a key on fear of incriminating himself?

Unless they can prove its stolen, your friend should be able to claim it unopened. Maybe you'd have to claim it. Ask a lawyer.

I'm pretty sure they need a warrant to open the safe, if they open it without one anything they find would be inadmissible anyway so I doubt they'll even bother with it.

OP I believe you're overreacting since your buddy claimed ownership of it, although if there's nothing in the safe that relates to your buddy(passport, old ID, birth certificate etc.) then I could see why you're worried. What's your buddy going to do about it in the meantime?

Yea, you're in a bad deal, but I still think you should come clean. If the safe is indeed your friend's, he's the one that should be more worried about things than you. You can claim you had no knowledge of the contents of the safe. You might be throwing your friend under the bus... but it's better him than you; plus don't think for a second that if things were reversed he wouldn't do it to you.
Running is viewed as admission of guilt, when they eventually find you (and they will eventually, because unless you have a large amount of money to stay off the radar, it's just a matter of time) it will just be so much worse.
Best defense in this case is offense. Be smart! Don't run!

1) clean house
2) remember that if they obtained a search warrant for your house they can/will take your computers, or at the very least your hard drive(almost always your computer though), along with any portable storage(USB drives, burnt cd/dvd's/etc).
tl;dr make sure your house/computer/cell phone are "clean". Sounds like it's time to lawyer up.

Clean house bro, Get a lawyer, tell the lawyer EVERYTHING!!! including that you cleaned house. Lawyers are bound to their code and shit, you should be ok as long as you go that route. If you dont have anything for them to find at home or tie shit to you (besides the safe in your trunk), a lawyer will keep shit from escalating to you. It'll cost you $$$, but at least you wont have to run or spend time getting ass raped
