Trey is awesome! Been my favorite for a while.
Agree there is no best though

I fixed ur quote.
I love clapton...I went through my phase where I thought clapton was god, and learned his licks note for note...The solos in crossroads are pretty insane
But Jimi Hendrix took it a step farther, and Clapton knew this, which is why he was crying on the cab ride home from his first Hendrix show...He knew he was no longer the god of the electric guitar, and he had a big swollen ego at that point so it crushed him

I feel like the greatest guitar player comes down to opinion. All of the guitar players mentioned here are obviously very talented, and it just comes down to the persons taste in music.
I'm a big Jerry fan, obviously. I know a lot of people will disagree. Technically, he's not really the best, but I like his style the best.
Page is a beast. Love his sloppy ass style.
Also a Hendrix fan, but am surprised of his popularity in this thread.

Taking into account guitar skills, emotive playing, and achievements in music history I'd have to say Eric Clapton, he's a beast.
The Yarbirds
BlueBreakers
Cream
Blind Faith
Delaney and Bonnie
Derek and the Dominoes
And a succesful solo career. I think this is kind of insane...

Clapton IS amazing, no arguing that. What I think is most impressive about him is his range of different styles. He's got amazing acoustic work, and all kinds of amazing electric work. White Room and Wonderful Tonight are the two that I really dig from him.
@Romson, a lot of the legends were self-taught. Page was largely self-taught. Hendrix was too. He got so fluent because he BREATHED guitar. I guess that when he was growing up, regardless of what he was doing, he was also playing guitar. He slept with his guitar too. And I did mention Allman. Much respect due. Slide is really hard to play, and even harder to play well. And I think it's safe to say that he played well
I do think Page has Clapton beat though. He's got just as much range as Clapton, and he's played with just as many people. He was a huge studio musician before he did the Zeppelin thing. Like Clapton, he also played in the Yardbirds. I wanted to dig up a list of all the different songs that Page played on, but I can't find one anywhere.
Respect to them all though.

I've seen most of the "greats" live except Hendrix, who I would call the greatest. The best guitar solo I've ever seen live was by Prince in '04.

Stevie Ray Vaughn was also a spectacular guitarist. Not the greatest of all, but he certainly knew how to play a tune. He plays a wicked live version of Little Wing.

Stevie Ray Vaughn was the man. When he died many said he was the last hope for Rock n Roll. Saw him with Jeff Beck in '89. Stevie died 20 years ago. I wonder what he'd of been doing the last 20 years if he was alive. He might of turned out to be the greatest. He was up there on the list already.

SRV is amazing, no doubt, but I still shy away from white-man blues type players. Like, SRV was the shit, but the legion of guitarists out there who copy him sound so lame and derivative imo.

I agree about the SRV wannabe clones but "white man blues" is a term I would not use. The blues is a feeling and who feels it knows it regardless of color. Jimmy Paige and Eric Clapton..among others come to mind. I know what you mean though.

okay maybe a bad term. When I hear jimmy page or hendrix, I don't hear genres, I just hear soul. I wouldn't say Jimmy Page plays white man blues. When people are like "yeah I play a lot of blues," i'm a little skeptical. To me that sounds like somebody too lazy to develop their own style.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm a huge fan of Steve Howe. He has a very unusual style of playing and it's one of the things that made Yes stand out from the other bands. I love how they seemed to be more influenced by classical music than blues.
