The dead give me what I am looking for in music, Creativity, spontaneity, exploration, an unmatched fearlessness in taking chances with the direction of the music, I believe music is a living breathing thing, something that should always be expanding and developing.

Converge is head and shoulders above any metal band there has ever been IMO.
BTBAM is amazing. I lost hope for them after colors but then they released
The Great Misdirect. One of the best metal albums there is.

I like the dead a lot, they play some really fun music. I can understand not liking them though, I wasn't always a fan until I got a bit older and listened to them a lot more. The whole hating of Rush and Queen in this thread saddens me though. 2 of the best rock bands of the 70's, how can anyone hate them?

I feel like alot of jam bands must be seen live to be appreciated.
I never cared for the Dead myself, until I saw Ratdog and company at a harvest fest in 2004. All of a sudden I "got it".
Same with the first time I saw String Cheese, Widespread Panic, Umphrey's, etc etc.
There's just something about the atmosphere and the vibe that can be pretty special.
Once you're hooked, you can listen to recordings afterwards and it just brings you back to that special feeling.

I wasn't really impressed with the dead the first time I heard them, but the music really grows on you if you give it a chance.
And you can't really judge a jam band independently of the jam culture in which it exists. It's not just about the music. It's about the people, the good times they have, and of course the good drugs that they have. I mean, there are definitely some jam festivals where, if you can't have fun there, then there is something wrong with you.
