TOOL blows my mind

I'm sitting here at 4:48 in the morning with the headphones on just sitting back in awe of the music they have created. Nothing tickles my eardrums in nearly the same way! I'd compare TOOL to a lot of very epic bands; I wonder if there are other artists who are similarly exacting out there that I've never heard of. That would be cool!

I just listened to Lateralus. You really can't go wrong, it's an epic album. Thing is, they all are =)

I'm surprised nobody's disputed my opinion of TOOL yet - half maybe cause it's early still, but half because I imagine most agree with the sentiment

i can enjoy Tool, I just don't really care for a lot of the lyrics. They are good for a youthful-angst sort of paradigm but beyond that, I don't find them all that good or profound, even the more matured stuff in later albums. Musically, I think they do some great stuff, starting with Aenima, but not to the point where I've ever been an avid tool listener.
in short, I've never thought they were something truly phenomenal, but they do have some pretty awesome moments. I would definitely dig it if some TOOL was on but there's a ton of music I'd rather listen to.
but, experience is relative, so... enjoy!

That's so untrue. The lyrics to the song Lateralus, for example, are profoundly uplifting and the entire song is a celebration of the human experience - practically dedicated to celebrate the intensity and reality of being alive, being alive now, being able to act, being all the things that make homo sapiens so strange and wonderful a creature.
I don't see how that could be a downer!

i know tons of people who are into them and i can really see why, and i definitely like their sound - it's fantastic and so cohesive. but despite of all this talent, i just can't get into them.

I've known a number of people who feel that way about TOOL but love A Perfect Circle, which I find kind of interesting.

Take it whatever way you want but I've always found it hard to listen to most lyrics and even then I've a hard time decyphering them
As such,I listen to the instruments and pay attention to whatever melody. It just seems a bit dark.Quote:

One song- H. Can you feel it coming over like a storm again? I like certain APC songs more myself. Maynard may be a genius, but i need lyrics i can understand. He babbles like Jim Morrison did. Danny Lohners 3 Libras remix is great ambient trip music.

Tool reminds me of Rush in some ways. They're both very layered and technical, with lots of complex rhythms and analytical lyrics. I think Rush has a greater variety in their style, though I like Tool as well.

Here's a list of their best songs from all albums (IMO):
46&2 Stinkfist Aenemia Prison Sex H Opiate Parabol/Parabola The Patient Lateralus Jerk-Off Flood
They have a lot of great songs actually, but those are some that stand out a little more than others.

I've got some live recordings of them somewhere on my comp where they totally re-do all their songs and play them differently. They are true artists.
Also when you hear them play live they sound the same as they do on cd - shows that they are actually playing the music and not just using sound engineers and studio effects to create fake music.

Tool & TMV are amazing...I'd go so far as to say Tool is our modern day King Crimson & TMV (The Mars Volta) our Zeppelin. I know i'll get a lot of bitchin about it, but listen to the music and tell me I'm wrong.

TOOL is the shit. I can't fucking wait to drop some L and listen to their whole new album (they're in the studio right now).
Not only have many of their songs impacted my life in their own way; but Adam Jones has been a big influence on my guitar playing. Their music is just so expressive and epic to me. Not to mention their live sound is fucking flawless and they change up each song they play to make it even more badass.
Learn to play Aenema on guitar and tell me it doesn't bring about the same emotions in you that the lyrics are invoking.

Tool is not the best band in the world, it is merely the beginning of the road to the legends:
ISIS
King Crimson
Tortoise Failure Pelican
Red SParowes Prisma Karnivool
Buckethead (though hes always been rocken it harder and faster than tool could ever manage, 29+ albums? yes please, music doesn't need to be thought about, it needs to be played, tool having only 5 albums with salival not included is pretty weak after over 20 years :/ Buckethead shows us you don't need to take 5 year hiatuses to sell wine to figure out what your next album is gonna be about) who else, I'mma continue rambling here
Talk Talk Cult of Luna Jesu Zozobra Old Man Gloom Cave In Talking Heads
Sepultura
AYREON (if you don't know ayreon you are in for a treat, that is if you conjure the will to say to yourself there are better bands than Tool, which, Ayreon certainly is) Between the Buried and Me Canvas Solaris Irepress PRIMUS, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Deftones Desert Sessions Kyuss (come on, 50 Million Year Trip? paalease) ELOY (a must for any fan of pink floyd) Electric wizard FloaterHawkwind Helios Creed <-----DEEP BLUE VACCUM CLEANER son Intronaut Rwake IQ Iron Butterfly JOHN PAUL fuckin JONES Lotus (of course) Mobios Project Modest Mouse IN FLAMES Mr. Bungle MuDvAyNe (at least LD 50 and end of all things, classics) NEKTAR (<-----RECYCLED listen to one of the songs from that album and you will be spellbound Omar A. Rodriguez Om Oysterhead Paradise Lost police PURE REASON REVOLUTION
I could go on but I got stuff to do, just, there are other bands more edifying than tool could ever be, ya can't listen to the same over and over.

I fucking love this about lateralus. Only TOOL would properly use the fibonacci sequence in a song and have it mesh perfectly with their sound and lyrics. Spiral out... Keep... Going:

And about TOOL being for the emo:

I *'d the ones on yours I would've listed if you didn't already do it.
As far as TOOL being the beginning of the road, I would agree that they are the ones that either re-shaped or opened me up toward all of my musical preferences after 14. Which is to say that, from listening to TOOL I grew an incredibly long attention span for music and a desire for overly self indulgent artistic tangents.
This thread is now about listing every band you can think of that is really really cool

Good to see someone else appreciates Merzbow. Listening to his music normally is an experience; when you're high it feels like your brain is being shredded... in a good way.

dude, back in the 90s, i was so into Aenima. there was this station Krock in my hometown that played all that good stuff, and i'd listen to that while delivering newspapers in the rain like everyday.
i love aenima, that song is so great. 46&2 is too.
lateralus came out while i was in college, and i had fallen outta the rock scene then. at that point, i was listening to a lot of rave music, experimental electronic music, and world music. i mean i listened to lateralus, but it didn't catch me the way aenima did.
when electronic music started to dull, i started listening to a lot of rock again. i went back to lateralus and 10000 days, but i still dun think they are as good as aenima.
another band from the 90s at least that not many people talk about is HUM. not sure, but i think they onli had one album, "you'd prefer to be an astronaut". that album sounds really psychedelic to me... they got famous for their song "stars", which is a great song but the rest of the album is great as well.
i like this song the best

I've tripped on Acid to all the albums...Undertow is my favorite. I've seen them live three or four times tripping on acid. I love tool but damn I see "evil" visuals when I listen to them probably because they follow the occult. My favorite songs are You lied and Push it from the Salival CD

If anyone is interested this is an album by Children Of The Anachronistic Dynasty, Maynard's band before tool. It's not that great but it has it's moments.
And I believe this thread is incomplete without this video.

Evil, dark, supernatural, whatever you wanna call it...thats what it is I mean compared to tripping to something like the Grateful dead there is a massive difference...and yes I know danny is interested in the occult but so is most of the band including Maynard. I love the creativity that tool represents but looking back I can't help but question their message to people. I'll always be a fan but lets just say I don't take their music to heart like I used to.

Here's the main thing about TOOL that is so great if you ask me, and I was made keenly aware of this yet again on their most recent stadium tour: Almost all of their material, even the songs that get radio play, have odd, complex rhythmic structures yet they still groove very effectively. You don't get that with many other bands, not even most of the other bands mentioned in this thread. Not even other bands that are considered "prog". Very few bands have such a consistently unique and effective rhythmic thing happening. That's why they are so successful(even though most folks don't think about the music consciously in those terms). And because they have one of the best rock singers in history, a guitar player with restraint and exceedingly artful tone and a bass player with synesthesia.

"... and a bass player with synesthesia" should be the icing on the cake, if you ask me. Their band has the best lineup of musicians I've even seen. Danny Carey is better than the drummer from Rush, and uses better, more complex rhythms that flow better. Adam Jones is extremely creative, and doesn't overpower the shit out of the music with wailing power chords. Don't forget maynard, either.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.
Black then white are all I see in my infancy. red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me. lets me see there is so much more and beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities. As below, so above and beyond, I imagine drawn outside the lines of reason. Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.
Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line. Reaching out to embrace the random. Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.
I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.
With my feet upon the ground I lose myself between the sounds and open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin. I'm reaching up and reaching out, I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me. And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been. We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
Spiral out. Keep going, going...
-Lateralus
Quote:
I have come curiously close to the end, down Beneath my self-indulgent pitiful hole, Defeated, I concede and Move closer I may find comfort here I may find peace within the emptiness How pitiful
It's calling me...
And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping The moon tells me a secret - my confidant As full and bright as I am This light is not my own and A million light reflections pass over me
Its source is bright and endless She resuscitates the hopeless Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting
And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt Don't wanna be down here feeding my narcissism. I must crucify the ego before it's far too late I pray the light lifts me out Before I pine away.
So crucify the ego, before it's far too late To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical, And you will come to find that we are all one mind Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable. Just let the light touch you And let the words spill through And let them pass right through Bringing out our hope and reason ... before we pine away.
-Reflection
The last part sums it up pretty well, but all of that.
I guess on the earlier albums there was a little more about how stupid people deserve to die, but whatever.

Lateralus most def. for a journey of feelings.
But really any album, Opiate is a little short, Undertow and Opiate are both, I'd say, more "raw," than their later albums.
I'd also say that they were more "intense" in their earlier albums, and more complex and "spiritual" in their later albums.
I'd personally listen to 10000 days. Wings for Marie has no words to describe it.

In this exact order:
Pushit (Live from Salival) Third Eye (either ÆNIMA or Salival works fine) Lateralus (SKIP FAAIP DE OIAD THOUGH) End with whatever version of Third Eye you didn't start with
From there I'd move on to psytrance or psychill or acid rock or vooredoms depending on mood/what kind of weed I'm smoking but that's just me. 10,000 is great and all but I've only ever enjoyed it on dissociatives. It's too "songy" for me; besides wings/days, the album has too many songs that are like *about the vocals* for me to trip to. Lateralus has more triple-layered vocals with a cadence that flows more with the melody.
That's all personal though.

i'm not a total tool nut, but salival transported me to other worlds.
I used to do dxm alot and would listen to a couple songs from salvial on repeat for hours.
The main circut is pushit and third eye. those two got me so fucking high it was sickening. In all the years i've listened to those two songs (and i've been listening to third eye since i was in middle school) i've never been able to put into words what they do to me, where they bring me.
This year i did dxm a couple times again. Fuckin i put on third eye once and i was back in the exact same place. Its always the same and yet the challenge it presents to me its still so mysterious i just straight up lose my mind trying to comprehend it (the circuit, not just third eye, though both songs do that individually also).
The full circut for me is:
No quarter -> you lied -> merkaba -> pushit -> third eye.
Never liked listening to them on psychedelics, think their albums are decent but wasn't really incredibly into them, but like i said, those two circuts got me sooooooooo fucking high while on dxm.
if i get fully into the main circut during third eye i realize something about living infinite times and i become a diamond inside a waterfall of sorts, but nothing like exsists on earth. I completely am outside my life and self. if there is such thing as reincarnation following the circut brings me to my soul's travel center, where i watch all of my selves come and go into their different places and times... and i am not any of those things... Then i wake up and come back and forget and forget and forget till the i repeat the circut, each time a little more conscious and its a fucking puzzle!!!! each time i'm a little more conscious and i penetrate deeper in the heart of the mystery.
Thats third eye... pushit does something completely different to me that prepares me for third eye, and nourishes and heals me after it.
repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat.
The full circut is to get me deep enough so i can enter the main circut. No quarter and you lied remind me of the ills that make it necessary to leave the earth. Merkaba is the break, the wake up and fall down. Attention paid is equal the gift received.
And always fucking timothy leary telling me to think for myself. HOW DO I THINK FOR MYSELF WHEN YOU"RE TELLING ME TO DO IT!?!?! I'M TRYING SO HARD TO THINK FOR MYSELF AND NOT DO AS YOU SAY AND ITS WORKING.
Quote:
A child's rhyme stuck in my head. It said that life is but a dream. I've spent so many years in question to find I've known this all along.
whoa! super looooong tool post. Also mildly entertaining because i sound mildly nutty. For real i could write pages and pages of shit about my experience with those two songs.
edit: when i get fully into it time goes so slow. and of course the songs keeps repeating night after night after night, So i have ALOT of thoughts about every tiny detail.
the timothy leary line is an easy one to remember. Yeah its not so hard to accept when an authority tells you to ignore authority. BUT IN REAL TIME!? It hits you with the first riddle right off the back. Again, easy to rationalize and logically sort your way through, but watching your thoughts in real time its a bit of zen koan. Its just the warm up. Respecting someone and listening to what they say telling you not to listen to what they say, and being thankful for it, and wanting to do as they say and not do as they say, because you respect them... but you want the experience of not doing as the authority says. Are you supposed to stand up and go put on your tie and go to work while listening to that? Wouldn't that be doing what he says about not doing what he says!? So is doing what he says not doing what he says which is doing what he says which is not doing what he says?
remember when you thought that? you had the same thought last time, you had all these same thoughts last time. Just pick up where you left off. And following the chain this thought looks just like that thought looks just like this thought. That time is just like this time. You remember that you remember. You remember remember remembering, and the voice is still coming at you, just like the first time, you have to decide RIGHT NOW. always right now.
And while i'm thinking all this I'm shrinking to nothing, i'm growing to everything. I can hear and think perfectly. If i'm deep in the circut i start out in something like space. Then as i am shrinking or growing or twisting, spiraling off into the distance i enter a space where everything is flashing. Some color like gold but not really. The gold and whites of nerves Firing free from external stimulus, following the rythm and hum of the little dxm molocules buzzing around fucking everything up. Little sharp squiggles everywhere. The squiggles are really tiny... Its like the wind... cutting through me the little squiggles touching all MY molocules and then just going through. like the wind.
And this keeps repeating and repeating and repeating and time is going really slow and you do this night after night after night after night.
just warming up. (i can't believe eyedea is dead)

personally my 2 favorites (if i HAD to be forced to pick favorites, i like a lot of their songs a lot [and it would have to be these 2 since they are MADE for each other]) would be:
Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman) => Rosetta Stoned
i remember loving the songs originally, but usually had my ipod on shuffle. one day my friend suggested i listen to the albums in the intended order, so i did so while tripping once.
and Rosetta Stoned being a response to Lost Keys.... just like.... filled a void or something. it felt so right. haha.

DXM trances are usually like dreams. If you want to call them holes, there are many holes you can go into to get to the deeper dreams. really deep holes lead to really deep places. It feels just like falling down a hole or falling down a tunnel. You suddenly just have to lay down and close your eyes. Some people see them.
Then you have to stay in the dream/trance. To stay in the dream, the dream has to keep going forward, it has to remain consistent, and it has to be hypnotic, if its too rough you'll just jump and stumble around and maybe go puke.
When i say circut, i mean i find a space where i can let myself "fall" into a deep trance. A pace i'm comfortable with, a direction i'm comfortable with and a destination i'm comfortable with.
Once i let myself fall into it, what makes it a circut is those two songs can keep feeding into themselves, like i said pushit heals me after third eye and gets me ready to go really deep into it. Just listening to pushit it or some or songs (which i would do too) The energy doesn't ramp, it meanders. Just listening to straight stimulating overload stuff one after another and personally my brain just stops giving a shit and gets tired and takes me back out.
Also for me, but maybe not objectively, the two songs are part of a continuous narrative. You see in my updated post up there how i go on and on with that stupid logic thing? For me pushit and third eye do the same thing for me, one just leads me to the other leads me to the other. I would imagine this is pretty personal.
I call it a circut because i can stay in a really deep state for a long time just repeating, until the drug wears off or until i black out and wake up, often losing interest.
I would black out all the time following thoughts. Each time i would remain conscious a little bit longer. When seconds are taking minutes and you have days of time to just be totally out of your head with all the memories of every other time you were like this its easy to get lost... and then i would just wake up.
by blacking out i mean it could just be for a quarter second. Just some break in consciousness and i'm no longer in such a deep state. Usually i'd be too shaken to pursue it again that night. But each night I'd stay longer and time would stretch further... till i was at places outside of time... where i've always been, just like last time... i remember this.... chasing a trail of smoke and reason as the song says...
so yeah, tool has certainly blown my mind as recently as this year. I use alot of their tracks like ions or rosetta stoned when i do sound collages.

Me and my friends were just talking about this the other day:
How many times have you been tripping with music in the background and gone all -"Shhh... SHHHH!... what the fuck is that trippy ass noise" -5 second pause -"Ah nvm its some TOOL song that came on"

You tell me the music industry is dead. I tell you that music never should have been industrialized in the first place.

I can't remember the name of the tune that is in at the moment, but it was a real call made to a radio station. Presumably, a prank call I always loved how, when it looped around to the start as if perfectly made to do so. IMO all of their releases are more monolithic than a mere collection of unrelated songs.
I love TOOL but I think it is funny as hell how people that don't are compelled to announce that they suck, they're pretentious etc. You don't have to like them, but they most certainly do not suck, and their songs carry a great many themes both musical and lyrical that resonate deeply with many, myself included.
edit: looks like Krash Karma got the name thanks

A mix. I always loved Aenema and Undertow back in the day, lateralus seems to be made for psychedelics.
I guess if no one else is gonna do it; a sample of their albums:
Lateralus:
^^One of the most perfect songs ever written; absolutely soothing.
Undertow rocks(note massive bong hit)
Aemima is extremely trippy in a different kind of way.... It's kind of like a mixture of Undertow and Lateralus with some new stuff stuck in there that's awesomely peculiar.
This song is really a good summary of the album Aenima:
No, wait!! You should put off listening to this song until you are tripping nuts. That way it's your first time. Then do the loud music/lights off/comfy couch thing.
The feeling this song gives you while tripping is SO INDESCRIBABLE. You know, that your face is going to melt off feeling-but in a good way feeling? Yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhh.........
In fact, forget everything I have said, this, this is the song; the most emotionally pleasing spiritually trippy song they have ever written. It's a masterpiece. Very

That would freak the shit out of me if i was tripping.
That song freaks me out too, Tool is good about weird thangs in their music to freak you out.
One night I was in an abandoned farmhouse all alone, listening to Opiate, and there is one song on that album that has the sound of a phone ringing in the background. I didn't know this. Needless to say, I hit the road.

And because I can't resist, here are the lyrics to third eye.

Dreaming of that face again. It's bright and blue and shimmering. Grinning wide And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes.
On my back and tumbling Down that hole and back again Rising up And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.
In... Out... In... Out... In... Out...
A child's rhyme stuck in my head. It said that life is but a dream. I've spent so many years in question to find I've known this all along.
"So good to see you. I've missed you so much. So glad it's over. I've missed you so much Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away? Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away?"
Shrouding all the ground around me Is this holy crow above me. Black as holes within a memory And blue as our new second sun.
I stick my hand into his shadow To pull the pieces from the sand. Which I attempt to reassemble To see just who I might have been.
I do not recognize the vessel, But the eyes seem so familiar. Like phosphorescent desert buttons Singing one familiar song...
"So good to see you. I've missed you so much. So glad it's over. I've missed you so much. Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away? Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away?"
Prying open my third eye.
So good to see you once again. I thought that you were hiding. And you thought that I had run away. Chasing the tail of dogma. I opened my eye and there we were...
So good to see you once again I thought that you were hiding from me. And you thought that I had run away. Chasing a trail of smoke and reason.
Prying open my third eye

Tool is such an inspiration.

Nurse: Excuse me, doctor, do you have a moment? Doctor: A moment? What's the question? Nurse: More of a situation, a gentleman in Exam 3. Doctor: What's the problem? Nurse: That is the problem: we're not sure. Doctor: You've got the chart? Nurse: Right here. Doctor: Hmm... not much here, is there? Nurse: No doctor, no obvious physical trauma, vitals are stable. Doctor: Name? Nurse: No sir. Doctor: Did someone drop him off, maybe we can speak to them? Let's get some background on this fellow. Nurse: No ID, nothing, and he won't speak to anybody. Doctor: Well, let's say hello.
Doctor: Good morning, I'm Dr. Watson. How are you today? How are you today? Look son, you're in a safe place, we want to help you, in whatever way we can. But you need to talk to us, we can't help you otherwise. Now, what's happened? Tell me everything.
Alrighty, then ... picture this if you will.
10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes, in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51 Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy when a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my Birkenstocks, and me yelping...
Holy fucking shit!
Then the X-Files being, Looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of vanilla Chig Champa Did a slow-mo Matrix descent Outta the butt end of the banana vessel And hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw, and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip, and all I could think was: "I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice that I pissed my fuckin' pants."
So light in his way, Like an apparition, [that] He had me crying out, "Fuck me It's gotta be the Deadhead Chemistry The blotter got [right] on top of me Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"
And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning, E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose. He said, "You are the Chosen One, the One who will deliver the message. A message of hope for those who choose to hear it and a warning for those who do not." Me. The Chosen One? They chose me!!! And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school.
You'd better... You'd better... You'd better... You'd better listen.
Then he looked right through me With somniferous almond eyes Don't even know what that means Must remember to write it down This is so real Like the time Dave floated away See, my heart is pounding 'Cause this shit never happens to me
I can't breathe right now!
It was so real, Like I woke up in Wonderland. All sorta terrifying I don't wanna be all alone While I tell this story. And can anyone tell me why Y'all sound like Peanuts parents? Will I ever be coming down? This is so real Finally, it's my lucky day See, my heart is racing 'Cause this shit never happens to me
I can't breathe right now!
You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I've just said! See the Dead ain't touring And this wasn't all in my head. See, they took me by the hand And invited me right in. Then they showed me something I don't even know where to begin.
Strapped down [to] my bed Feet cold [and] eyes red I'm out of my head Am I alive? Am I dead? Can't remember what they said God damn, shit the bed.
Hey ...
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position. Such a heavy burden now to be the One Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending, To write it down for all the world to see.
But I forgot my pen Shit the bed again ... Typical.
Strapped down [to] my bed Feet cold and eyes red I'm out of my head Am I alive? Am I dead? Sunkist * and Sudafed Gyroscopes and infrared Won't help, I'm brain dead Can't remember what they said God damn, shit the bed
I can't remember what they said to me Can't remember what they said to make me out to be the hero Can't remember what they said Bob help me! Can't remember what they said
[We] don't know, [and we] won't know (x12)
God damn, shit the bed!

Just listened to this, totally describes the way I feel towards my woman. That fucking passive agressive bullshit she puts on drives me insane. Fucking cunt. If she doesn't wake up, thats all she'll ever be, my fucking cock sleeve. Hopefully she wakes up or something better comes my way, cause I may have to kick her ass out the door.

This thread has given me what appears to be hours worth of new material to look at. The rest of the thread has reminded me over and over of how much experiencing TOOL has positively affected my outlook on living. Something with the capacity to do this to a person is something I certainly, in my worldview, define as a hugely good and important thing.
Posting the lyrics to Third Eye and Rosetta stoned - those were fun to read.
I can't possibly listen to all the songs I've been inspired to put on the mental queue right now and, though the information overload can be daunting, it sure beats the alternative.

no one told me there was a tool thread over here! I can't properly express how tool has influenced my life. Just the other night they announced a show in Hawaii. I've decided to go there for it. I've met some really cool people at the shows I've gone to. Plus the shows themselves are awesome. is anyone else going to the Hawaii show? Now im going to read this thread.

I never mentioned at the start of this thread that I've been to 14 TOOL shows. Every single one of them was utterly fantastic.
I was going to start a thread on "concert batting averages" about how, with TOOL 14 of 14 shows have been FANTASTIC (batting 1.00), with APC 5/5 were also fantastic (1.00), and how with Rufus Wainwright as an alternative example from the top of my head, out of two shows I went to one was great and one was kind of disappointing (batting .50)
The live shows are utterly crucial. I find it very difficult to respect a "band" that, when you go see them live, they aren't even physically capable or talented enough to come close to what they did on the album (which was spliced together from hundreds of takes, no doubt.) With TOOL, that never even enters ones mind.

And I'm profoundly jealous I don't live closer to HI! The west coast too, for that matter. Unless I'm willing to invest some serious travel bucks (well, I've done it before for TOOL ...) I might not see them for a while.
I had to go to 14 shows to finally see "Third Eye" performed live. After 13 shows where they hadn't played it, when at that 14th I heard Tim Leary begin speaking out of the loudspeakers I think I came my pants.
Third Eye live was so euphoric I find it hard to even recall clearly. If only I'd been able to see them on the AEnima tour!

yeah! I know exactly what you're talking about with that third eye stuff. I have a screen shot of my computer when they played in nola. I had a couple twitter feeds up and a few other pages up waiting for the setlist to be posted. then i saw third eye and shit the bed, when it was confirmed. So at that point I figured I had to see as many shows as possible during that last tour. Saw them both nights at red rocks, then vegas, and the two LA shows. Every tool show ive ever been to has been utterly amazing in may ways. I'm up to 15 and HI will be 16. Since I left Los Angeles last july I decided to save up money to go over to Europe when they do their next Euro tour. If you ever go to one of these tool army meet ups you'll meet some folks that have like 50 or 60 tool shows under their belts. Tool has some pretty hardcore fans, as im sure you know. *sighs* good times.

Except that Marilyn Manson did it first, by roughly a year I might add.
Elaborate. Are you saying they did this on Holywood? Where?
It's in the beats, for example the first track starts out with sounds prior to the guitar in a sequence of 1, 1, 2, 3, 5. Track 2 follows with 8 beats. Track 3 follows with 13 staccato guitar notes
And so on.
It's not as involved as Tool but the fact is it came out a year prior and Manson himself said the album includes Fibonacci sequences in the songs. Sorry it took so long to respond, I forgot about this thread.
It can also be seen in Manson's watercolor art, even though it isn't quite as related to the topic:

I suggest you look for some of their demo recordings from '91.

In my professional opinion, as of 2007, any discussion on NIN should begin with Year Zero, the only concept album that actually altered my experience of reality in a palpable way, rather than just adding an intriguing atmosphere.

Oh I get it, I took it differently. Thought you meant that we can't talk about anything released prior to YZ for some arbitrary reason.
The Downward Spiral really isn't touchable. It's not only NIN's best; it's one of the best albums I've ever heard from an objective standpoint as well. I've never tripped to NIN, I probably wouldn't ever. Not the type of music I'd trip to so I can't give any input from that perspective. I'll be honest I think pretty much everything that came out after The Fragile just wasn't that great. Some good spots like YZ here and there but still just not the NIN I fell in love with back in '95. And holy shit I got obsessed with NIN. I had at least 12 NIN shirts, every halo (except for the second disc of the MotP maxi single) plus what I could find on cassette and vinyl, and more than enough fan mixes, bootlegs, rarities, etc. to go around. It's pretty much all I listened to along with Manson for a couple years. For all of the NIN I've listened to over the years, I always find myself going back to The Downward Spiral time and again more than any of the rest combined.

Downward Spiral was a pretty big deal to me, but I was always more partial to Pretty Hate Machine. DS is more consistant track by track, but the tracks I love from PHM stand out amongst my favorite songs in general. I'm a little biased, or unbiased maybe, in the sense that I've always been drawn in more by Marilyn Manson than NIN; the similar space they fill had already been maxed out by Manson before I got into Downward Spiral. I've always been keenly aware of the difference between why some one would prefer either Manson or NIN over the other; NIN seems more real, true to life, genuine. Manson seems more cartoony at times, over the top, theatrical, dramatic.. some people just seem to be more drawn to one than the other.
I stumbled onto the Year Zero Alternate Reality Game really early, right around when My Violent Heart was found, and I just happened to be knee deep in a heavy period of darvocet and dxm abuse (darvocet does weird things to my mood/perception, especially with DXM)
Everything about it was so similar to the head-trip I was going through at the time. The entire theme of revolution, the feeling that at any minute shit was going to go crazy and humanity was going to take a deep plunge, that government agencies were going to put all their remaining effort into being as militant and forceful as possible...
I spent more time walking with headphones on when that album came out than I'd ever spent before.
Out of my entire life, walking around my desolate city filled to the brim with abandoned factories and houses and stores with Year Zero in my ears (tripping balls on dissociatives and buffered from it all even more with darvocet) stands out as one of the most vivid memorable times of my life that shaped who I am and the way I experience this place. Topped only by meeting my woman and maybe a few other "firsts"

As a Nine Inch Nails fan, you might like the song "passive" by A Perfect Circle. It was originally written/composed by Maynard and Danny Lohner from NIN, and was originally going to be included as part of a side-project called "Tapeworm", that I think was a collaboration between NIN and Maynard (not sure about the rest of TOOL.) Back then it was called "Vacant"
When that fell through, a few years went by, and then A Perfect Circle decided they'd release the song, but under the new title. For a long time there was just a live recording of "Vacant" floating around the net; I was very happy when they decided to make a studio version - "Passive"

I hope no one said this already I'm not reading 9 pages of tool fans (aptly named "tools" by the band) talking.

lol. Okay truth be told I really like Tool, I just haven't listened to them in a while. I hate listening to Maynard talk in interviews though, but that's an easy fix I just don't do it.

Sometimes artists get this idea that because they have a base of fans that likes their music, they'll have a base of fans who will like their philosophy/politics/dumbass religions/other ideas. Sometimes they're right, but presenting those ideas can have an alienating effect on an audience who respects you as one kind of artist, but may be unfamiliar or not as favorable to you as you fill the role of another form of artist.

Dude thank you for saying this. I was reading through the thread and was going to reply, but you seemed to sum this up well. I agree that it is someone drowning, and think it sets the whole mood for Undertow.
I think it's funny people make a point to correct this statement as though they can say for sure.
Nobody knows absolutely b/c you weren't there and it probably isn't any of the things we have stated.
I have loved Tool since before Paul was murdered and replaced and I have heard everything from bonghit, to motorboat, to someone drowning as an explanation.
ANY OG TOOL FAN would know that TOol is all about what their music means and is to the individual listening to it, not what it actually is.
So then debating over what their music means is about as pointless as calling someone a sellout.
I believe when Maynard was specifically asked in an interview one time, he said the noise was indeed, "a noise type thing". My Lord, if he doesn't even care enough to correct people on music thangs, why should his minions?
I wasn't going to say anything, but being corrected twice about something that isn't even a fact kinda pushed my buttons, I guess....plus no coffee yet.
See you, auntie.
It is worth mentioning that much of what Tool says, you need to take with a HUGE grain of salt. A lot of it is made up (an interview hinting at 24-minute songs, and an April Fools' prank about a highway accident come to mind), so be careful when you choose to believe something you are being told. If anything, it is probably a good reminder that we should exercise our best judgment and not be sheep in the herd. (One of Tool's main messages seems to be that people need to think for themselves more.) After all, the falsehoods are usually well told, but do tend to seem a bit peculiarly off-the-wall.

Just thought I'd mention, I saw A Perfect Circle perform Mer De Noms in it's entirety last weekend, about 15 feet from the stage in a medium-small venue. Yes, I wept openly about three times. Once toward the end of Judith in anticipation of Orestes, once during Orestes and again during Brena.

I've never been able to get into more than "Judith" from APC. I have their entire discography and have listened to every album, some more than a few times. Just not for me I guess. Then again, I really disliked tool up until maybe two years ago so maybe it'll take that long for APC to grow on me.

Mer De Noms I mean. In all honesty it's the only thing in the catalog that I think really matters at the end of the day. Yeah, 13th Step, I'm glad it exists, but it's no Mer De Noms. And the covers album is inconsequential entirely.

where were they touring?
(please dont ban me for posting).
Small west coast tour I think. They played the Showbox here in Seattle three nights in a row, different album each night. It sold out in literally 5 fucking seconds and I couldn't score one off Ticketbastard even though I was on hitting refresh right at 10:00 am. Fortunately my great friend helped me out. And the 10 year old album did cometh out and they saw that it was good.

I agree with most everything you said, which makes me feel bad that I have to point out that Paul D'Amour wasn't murdered - he's still alive and well. (Insert lame comment about "now who's OGT?" here - haha, it would've made for a decent slam too if I was replying to someone who'd been acting ignorant, not to mention that I only discovered TOOL after AEnima came out so I can't really honestly call myself OGT, especially compared to someone who's been a fan since Paul was in the band.) Here's the Wikipedia article on him if you want to double check. He left the band over creative differences from what I recall; it certainly wasn't because he was murdered. Sorry to be "correcting" you when your post was making a good point about the other times in this thread you've been "corrected!" Do you remember where you originally heard Paul was murdered? I wonder ...
This reminds me of when Toolshed.down.net announced that the band had died in a bus crash one April Fools day. I'm glad I didn't check the page that day; it supposedly resulted in false news columns being published and a great number of fans losing it!
Maybe the "Paul was murdered" thing came to be in an analogous fashion?
Edit: D'oh! Seeing as you mentioned the bus accident story in your post, I guess that means I skimmed your post a little too quickly after reading the thing about Paul; I'm actually kind of blown away that I ended up referencing the bus accident story to illustrate an idea after you just did the same thing. Maybe my quick-skim stuck the idea into my subconscious even though I didn't consciously register that you had mentioned it.

Krash Kharma said: Downward Spiral was a pretty big deal to me, but I was always more partial to Pretty Hate Machine.
Your story bears some similarity to one of mine. A Perfect Circle put out "Thirteenth Step" while I was still battling an addiction to painkillers. There were a number of times I was driving to pick up oxys and listening to "The Package" on my way; the irony was not lost on me, and after enough times and a lot of self-reflection it actually contributed to my finally deciding I needed help and couldn't fix myself on my own. I actually listened to that song EVERY time I would go to re-up; I guess I was trying to tell myself something.
For those folks who don't know APC well, "Thirteenth Step" was an album that explored drug addiction from a variety of perspectives in a pretty unique way - for example, while "The Package" is from the point of view of the user (who is overcome with cravings all the time whose life has been reduced to doing anything to score - pretending to like people he hates because they can hook him up, etc. - and avoid the pain of withdrawal ) whereas the song "The Stranger" appears to be from the point of view of a relative who is entirely unsympathetic to the family addict's situation, and isn't afraid of saying so!
The album turned out to be a useful tool (oops, I think I just made a pun) in examining my life at that point in time, and more specifically, increasing my awareness of how I was affecting everyone around me. I wouldn't go so far as to give an album - any album - a significant amount of credit for getting me off the damn painkillers, but I can't say it didn't help start me down that path by forcing me to think about it.

I have one extra ticket for tool's show in Hawaii on 1/14/11. I'm waiting to hear back from someone about it though, so it may be sold. tool in hawaii is going to be about as epic as it gets for me. especially if im able to get some good drugs out there. And to join in on this APC discussion i will just say that apc fucking rocks. I went to the first three shows of this recent tour in Tempe. got to see some great music. I've got a review posted on the growery i think. The thing i hated was the camera/smoking gestapo that were tactical to military expectations. bullshit! it was way worse than any prior show ive ever been to anyway.

The mind is a strange thang...especially when influences like Tool and APC help develop it.
On the APC note, I think they are equally as profound as Tool. I had my reservations at first, but they won me over in the long run.

Yes. See I really disliked Tool for years. It wasn't until maybe 2 years ago that I started to get into Tool and I'm still not into more than Aenema and Undertow. A few songs from other albums are good but don't get too much play overall. So I don't find myself getting into things Tool-related just for that reason alone. APC doesn't have what appeals to me about Aenema and Undertow, and doesn't really appeal to me otherwise. Just not a big fan I guess.

Fiddle and the Drum has the ability to bring me to tears when it catches me in the right place. That is a beautiful cover.

The tickets went on sale last Saturday. It's funny that the own band's website doesn't put up their tour dates. Only in the updates will you find em on their page. I don't know how to interpret that.
