well I think the big brown one is a porcini, just like scout found on the previous page, but it was starting to rot, notice the fly on it, and the red ones are russula species, I'm pretty sure..very common in grassy areas of SF parks. I'm sure Curecat can make a correction

I'm not one to really go for edibles in the urban SF setting, but I like taking photos.; I edited that last post and put numbers in there, at least, and I'll try to do that in the future to make it easier if you all want to go for ID

OOoooooh oh, yeah okay, I see it now. :smile:

That one is an Agaricus species, actually. Boletus edulis do not have fibrils on the cap.

Suillus pungens....hmm...those are very very common in grassy areas in SF parks..wait a gosh darn minute, that IS a bolete, just not a good bolete...milky droplets and everything

I always wondered about those, see them all the time in SF parks. I have to wonder sometimes because I've seen lots of Russians and Chinese hunting in SF parks and I wonder of it's one of these,, er maybe not the russula i hope

The one that Scout24 found is Agaricus augustus, aka the "Prince Agaricus". I can't tell from your photo if yours is the same species because there are a lot of Agaricus species which look similar. Though A. augustus likes to grow under conifers- Pines, Firs, etc. It stains orange and young mushrooms smell like almonds.

Yes, you are correct- it is a red Russula. But I only know one maaaaybe two good identifiers who will even think of trying to get a positive ID on this group. Many Russula in general are terribly difficult to identify, and red Russula are notoriously vexing.

yeah, see that's one of the reasons I don't mess with urban edibles other than cyans too much...but I know lots of immigrants do, but I'll be darned if i know what their picking

I'm not really aware of that much that really is good eating until you get out into the woods proper, but maybe I'll get lucky and post a photo this year of something that is good to eat..well, i guess the inky cap is good, but those are pretty fragile too

ps, the agaricus i found I think is closer to aurorae, looking at the mykoweb photos...and it was starting to rot...soon as i grabbed the stem it fell apart

We found some great almond mushrooms in shasta area this year. Don't know why the comerical growers passed it up for the common store agaricus. :shrug:

Didn't quite look the same tho. More yellow stain then orange. Is this the same species pictured above? Are the gills only pink when young? Thanks.

Sup broskis, decided to walk home from about 9PM to 10:10PM so I see if any mushies had popped up. Found some immature ones that I'll check back on in a few days and this:

I couldn't get a positive ID on it, I'm an amateur. Stem has about a 7 cm circumference and 7-8 cm tall, cap is about 10 cm in diameter, gills adnexed or free, spore print is pinkish fresh then brown when dry, very light standard mushroom odor, no staining/bruising, no annulus or volva, no secretions when cut. I forgot to take note which kind of trees it was growing near, but I can hardly recognize anything except pine trees anyways. Found it on some island thing in the middle of a street.

Edit: Oh, I think the gills are actually free, they just looked adnexed. I guess it's probably a meadow mushroom, correct? I want to eat it.

I'm new to this site, but have been doing my research on mushrooms for a while now. Just starting to put it into practice now. And was wondering if anyone has been seeing any cyan growing around the east bay of Cali?

yes, I know of somebody over on the east bay that's had a fruting, but only in heavily irrigated and transplanted spots...it should start in more natural areas within a few weeks, if it keeps raining

when you start seeing new green grass shoots in areas that are brown right now, that's when the season starts in un-irrigated areas
