groove salad and if you like female vocals like me lush is pretty good too. Both are stations of somafm. They play a lot of good stuff, and their playlist on twitter goes back for days if not more I believe. Good way to find new artists.

I have and like his tracks as well......they give me an odd feeling though.

I would also call bluetech downtempo, ambient to me is more like atmosphere's and soundscapes with a rare percussion line, very minimal.

Ambient and dub have very similar idea's. Creating a lush musical reality out of the energy around you. I always considered ambient and down-tempo to be good set and setting specific music. Like saying that the perfect dub is harmonized with a group using live musicians, tribal drums, flutes, and other instrumentation.

If you're just looking for purely atmospheric, I would start with Hearts of Space the long running radio program. They had a wonderful space theme tonight dedicated to Carl Sagans 30 year anniversary of 'Cosmos.'  Did you know that over 500 million people have watched the series, in over 60 countries? Beautiful.

Holy fuck, thanks to your recommendation right now I'm listening to Biosphere's album 'Substrata', which according to wiki is one of the classic ambient albums. Absolutely fucking amazing so far, I'm on track 4. Very nice. It could be all the beers and some whiskey I had earlier - but I just think thats the icing on the cake. I'm getting this album to trip to as soon as possible.
Thanks.

As far as tripping music goes, I'll always have a special place in my little heart for things like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and jam band music.
But I've come to realize in the last year or two that certain types of ambient, down-tempo, and chill out music just do it for me when I'm faded.
All 3 albums by Carbon Based Lifeforms are fucking orgasmic. Never quite heard anything like it. After my mind was blown by different kinds of ambient type music I've been on a quest to get all the good shit in these genres. They are the shit.

Threads like these allow me to discover these things.
Thank you, Shroomery.

This. You definitely gotta have good sound to get the most of that album. Very subtle frequency ranges.

Pete Namlook's 4 Seasons is really good too.

Too many to count.

Just tune into di.fm's space and ambient channel and listen. That's what I did to discover new ambient artists.

I searched for Eno's name because I didn't want to read the thread at the time and it wasn't found. Brian Eno is the king, God, and everything else of ambient music.

I love some of Eno's stuff and I hate some of his stuff too...

I do agree with you there!  Music for Airports is one of my favorites to put on my mp3 player with some good headphones and lay out in the field in the sun and get lost in my mind to.  Love it love it love it.

Gotta add my recommendation:

Artist: Jonsi and Alex
Album:  Riceboy Sleeps

I've had some seriously positive breakthrough moments while listening to this while in an altered state.  Just download it, get lifted/rolled/mushed/mesced/ and dont even turn it on until youre coming up/peaking.  I promise you will not be disappoineted.

Boards of Canada - Geogaddi. best album by them in my opinion but all of their songs are amazing.
Also another great Ambient band is Explosions in the sky.

I wouldn't really say that BoC is ambient. They're more IDM. I agree that Geogaddi is an amazing album.

I think I'm gonna listen to some Steve Roach and fall asleep. Dreamtime Return is good bedtime music.

--------------------
December 1960:
"They took the drug one evening at Leary's house and had a profound experience, during which Ginsburg prophetically realized that it was a time to start "a peace and love movement". He then ran naked around the house, attempted to get Kruschev and Kennedy on the telephone and announced to the operator that he was God."
