Here is my Spongi Style giant PF cake...
Mixed grain flour and verm, slightly dry side of "reccomended"
MS PESH (this PESH seems well suited to my abuse lol)
Cake was perfect breadpan size when made... fruiting in dub six quart msgs...
Reptile terrarium moss for moisture, cake elevated on jar lids...

Sadly I think my MSG was contaminated. I'm not 100% sure, it was growing either some really funky mycelium or some white mold. I decided to isolate it from my grow area instead of tossing it just to see.
Has anyone ever dealt with white mold (not cobweb)? I heard that all contams start out white until they sporulate but its been several days and theres no change in color.

Sometimes it's slow to sporulate.

As you could guess, I've been a lurker(for some time now) and finally decided to make an account... mostly, to contribute information and statistics that could prove useful to our common goals. Which is to transform the materials and knowledge at hand into as many mushrooms as efficiently possible.
So, hello shroomery!
I really like the idea behind this thread, or at least the info. that could be gained from the data and stats that make up each and every grow. MS or isolate, trends will appear given certain parameters and growing conditions... at least IME, and with all sorts of sized tubs and ratios of spawn:sub.
For most MS bulk mono tubs, I have found that 1:2-1:3 for spawn:sub ratios is best. 1:4 usually takes a few extra days and has a lower yield %, i.e. fewer dry grams per substrate volume. Anything less than 1:2 is not really worth spawning to bulk for me; might as well just fruit cased grain I would think.
Anyways, for regular mono-tubs, I have found that what really matters is the percentage of the tub that is filled with the sub. and spawn. For example, I used some 64 qt tubs for experimentation. Tub A had 2 qts spawn, 6 qts sub.(basic coir/verm/gyp) for a total of 8 qts. Tub B had 3 qts spawn, 9 qts sub = 12 qts. Tub C had 4 qts spawn and 12 qts sub. for 16 total quarts.
Tub Volume fill % first flush harvest harvest weight/total volume colonized (spawn + sub.)
Tub A 8/64 = ~12.5% produced about 580 wet grams, ~7 dry grams/quart
Tub B 12/64 = ~20% produced about 1000wet grams, ~8.5g/qt
Tub C 16/64 = ~25% produced about 1650wet grams, ~10g/qt
So, a mono-tub should be filled with a volume of spawn and sub. that equals 20-25% of said tub's total capacity for best performance. In other words, take your tub's total volume in quarts and divide by 4 or 5 to get appropriate (sub. + spawn)volume. Then take that number and divide by 3 or 4 to find out how many colonized grain jars you will need.
Also, I noticed that the moisture levels were better with tub C. And I never mist by the way... ever. If it's too dry then something is wrong, like fanning too much or not enough polyfill...

Would you guys say its better to have an MSG with too many holes or not enough holes? For example, I have a poorly drilled tub from last year, the holes are spaced out probably about 3 inches between each hole. Should I squeeze more holes in between or leave it as is?

I get better results with more holes, but it depends on airflow and whether you fan and such.
And your relative humidity and whether you've got a furnace going. And your substrate and whether you case.

These things vary wildly depending on temp and airflow. The same tubs I was watering once or twice a day this summer, now only need it every 3 days or so.

I've been experimenting with all sizes and shapes of tubages. I decided to stop lurking and start sharing my findings in hopes of helping others and fine tune my own efforts.
Most of my projects are reg. 64 qt. mono-tubs (usually with a 4.5:12 ratio), but I have also made those 12 qt. shoe box tubs(and every size inbetween) and put them in a 'perlite-mono'. I have even used those blue-tinted see-through rubber-maids, 30 qt (16.7 x 13.3 x 11.3 in.).
I am currently interested in the recent success I had with a 25 qt. Ultra Sterilite 1936 tub. They are half the height of a 'normal' 64 qt mono and I can use just half of my usual recipe(or I make two tubs instead). I have some future plans for these style of tubs using PE.
The fruits on a normal cube strain, like Burma, just start to curl when they get to the top of the lid. I wish I would have taken pictures of my first few experiments using this tub. Imagine a mass of ramen noodles and the noodles themselves are as thick as mushroom stems.
I also like the fact that I cut zero holes in this tub and only fanned it twice a day during the first week of fruiting conditions. After that, the pins were formed and I left it alone until I picked the first flush... in fact, I had a family emergency and was not able to get back to my grow spot for 4-5 days. Came back to almost 1000 wet grams from a ~9 quart sub.(2.5:6ish+), not especially high yield, but on par with the rest of my ventures. I just didn't really expect it to perform like that.
The room that this specific tub inhabited was already automated and set-up with other 'normal' mono-tubs on fan-timers, so it was not completely set and forget. I have a theory for why it seemed to produce so well with such little maintenance, but I want to do some more experiments, including PE, before I jump to any major conclusions.
