Pink Oyster Coir/Coffee Substrate Blocks(Second Flush Picture Update)
    #13161150 - 09/07/10 07:55 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

After doing a bunch of research about using coir for oysters and realizing that they do not fruit well off of just coir, I choose to follow RR's advice about mixing coir/spent coffee grounds at a 50/50 ratio for my substrate. I hydrated the coir with boiling water in a small bucket before mixing in the coffee grounds and letting the mixture sit for an hour. After this time I had to mix in a small bit of verm to dry up the mixture a bit and bring it to a better field capacity.

I realize this is half assed pasteurization at best, but I have read that pink oysters can be VERY aggressive and colonize a substrate before bacteria or mold has a chance to grow.

I then filled a 2L juice jug with 1 quart of spawn and 3 quarts of coir/coffee. I packed the substrate down after mixing the grain into the sub and let it colonize for 5 days before birthing it into my greenhouse. Here are some crappy pictures with better ones to come hopefully.

Also did one more quart of spawn in 1:3 ratio to my substrate and used a tupperware container for colonizing. After fully colonized popped it out and put it into fruiting yesterday. Primordia formation has begun today.

Just finished harvesting the 2L block, its going in for a dunk anytime now. I am unsatisfied with my current greenhouse setup and will have to tinker with it to provide more FAE. As well the one 23W CFL at 6500k is not cutting it for light, this much I know but have to figure out another lighting system. I have a lot of tinkering ahead of me but I am looking forward to it.

Took jokefox`s advice and did a battered pink oyster mushrooms. Took a pancake batter mix and dragged the oyster through it before frying with olive oil. DELICIOUS I must say...is almost like deep fryed shrimp. Getting ready here to cook another batch and clean the lab. Keep a look out for pictures later!

UPDATE Sept 9th
Finished dunk on 2L block and placed back into fruiting, here are some pictures of the tupperware block fruiting...lot of very small fruits. I am curious as to what would happen if I placed spawn and my substrate mix into bags and poke a few holes. If it would force all the energy to produce bigger fruits instead of lots of small fruits. Pictures as promised!

LOL yah looks like that is a path I need to look into. All these tiny fruits are hard to cook with but are delicious.

Thanks Fractal! To answer your question, the only other exposure I have had to Pl. djamor was the same culture from BRF cakes(Can be found under Evilmushroom's Goodies) The fruits from the coffee blocks did taste the same as the BRF cake fruits. The coffee fruits just appear meatier and in more abundance.

I did a lot of research before I realized that oysters do not like straight coir. I came across a post by RR that had a picture of an oyster species(Which slips my mind) Fruiting from a 50/50 mix of coir and spent coffee grinds. Clearly as you can see with my grow this is not a bad idea! Next time around I plan on mixing spawn and my 50/50 mix in bags before fruiting from a few poked holes.

Thanks for the comments!
EM

Sept 10th Pre Harvest UPDATE:

Tupperware Block:

Most of the fruits appear ready to harvest if not a TAD late. Plan on harvesting and dunking this brick tonight and placing back into GH with the other 2L block. I now see that fruiting blocks of Pl. djamor while pretty does not provide much in the way of meaty fruits. Like I stated before next time I will try growbags with a few poked holes to force the growth into a few clusters. Keep your eye out for the second flush from both the 2L and tupperware block!

The BE I am getting from these methods are PITIFUL I must say. This was my biggest flush yet, with bigger pink oyster fruits and the edible harvest weighed in at a pathetic 45Grams WET. I have dunked the block and will go for one more flush from both...but next time im going for bags with a few holes...exposing all sides of the substrate block to fruiting conditions does create a LOT of mushrooms big and small...mostly small...but this is not a good method I have learned the hard way.

Such a tease...a Mistake is not a mistake if you learn from it, failure is an option! lol

I will keep updated even tho I feel this grow was a failure, the information I have posted might help someone in the future.

I appreciate you doing all the updates because Im learning from the tech you chose to use. I think when I get my hands on some spores Im going straight for the bags. Mycelio has some very inspiring pics!

From what Iv gathered going from spores with an edible is ill advised. This is of course after I have gone and printed a BUNCH of pink oyster fruits.

Unless it is a personal project and you have the time to isolate and find a fruiting strain, it hardly seems worth the effort. Might suggest ordering an LC syringe from sporeworks or another sponsor.

QUESTION: What if you went from MS with pink oysters say, as long as you get one fruit could you clone and then see if that sectors and at least you have narrowed down your samples for a fruiting strain?

What are the odds of having a cake/wbs jar full of a non fruiting strain from MS?

If I end up doing another Pink Oyster LC ill hit you up in a :pm: and send some your way.

I forget how much coffee is back home, but heres its really expensive. I also dont see the point in using coffee/coir because of the price when straw is dirt cheap.

I'm watching my money closely because of the recession though. to each his own. Thanks for the experiment and keeping us up to date :super:

The coir cost me 2.40 CDN for a HUGE brick, and the spent coffee grounds were free. Just experimenting with what I had and have learned a fair bit in doing so. I believe next time will be a bit better, thanks for following along everyone

Forgot you can get coffee grounds for free from coffee shops :foreheadslap:.

Its mostly tea here

Might do a comparison between the two someday.

I still only use coffee to soak and cook my grains in. I think that plays into my bacteria factor. Might lay off of it for a while..

Sorry :offtopic:

No worries,

Iv never had problems with weak coffee solutions, such as spent grounds, or watered down coffee. But if your having a lot of bacterial problems, might want to cut it out and see if that is your vector of contamination. Also keep in mind that Pl. djamor mycelium is usually VERY aggressive and can colonize a substrate before nasties begin to germinate.

FYI:
The two blocks have been dunked for 16 hours a piece and have been placed back into the fruiting chamber. Might get a second flush, If not I plan to bury them in the back garden and move onto other projects.

Canadian Tire in a town over had them on sale, "Coir Potting Soil". Grabbed a couple and it clearly works fine
