not when the topic at hand is legalizing marijuana...the political reality of the 2010 elections is the elephant (which has a double meaning) in the room..which everyone else seems to be ignoring...talking about legalizing marijuana without considering this reality is like designing a spaceship that coasts off the edge of the earth...

Even if it does cost more, wouldn't you pay a little more to know that people aren't having their lives wrecked by arrests?

I fail to see any reasoning behind the assertion it would cost more.  Individual growers would supply farmers markets and sell their MJ for the true cost of production, which would be about the same as growing tomatoes or corn, etc.  I suspect $30 to $40 per pound would be a fair price, based on cost of production and a reasonable profit, and trust me, I'm no stranger to MJ growing.  Add taxes to that and perhaps we reach $50 per pound.

Exactly.  If alcohol was a schedule 1 drug and running a still would bring a 30 year sentence, that bottle of vodka would cost 500 dollars.

In other words, one would be allowed to grow cannabis in their garden out in the open. I could grow enough in one season to last me all year and never buy it again. It wouldn't even matter if the shitty store bought weed was expensive, so long as the sun shines. :stoned:

And that my friend, is why Prop 19 makes good sense!  This is a proposition for the consumers of cannabis.  The producers, not so much, as they are likely to be edged out of a good portion of the market by well capitalized corporate interests.  Nevertheless, I believe a boutique marijuana business can thrive if this proposition (and especially federal legislation) comes to pass.  Let California lead the way!

Marijuana and Alcohol cannot really be compared in this light.

Production and Market are completely different.

I doubt you will see a huge increase in price.  Plenty of people will take to growing smaller amounts for themselves, or in a grey market for they friends(much like it is today).

You will likely see plenty of taxes, however; I don't think it'll push the price past $10 a gram.  In fact, With some of the prices reported in the states, you are likely to see the price drop.

And...  I still maintain; better taxes then fines and prison terms.

Look at Amsterdam for example, from everything I heard, it's a little more, but the quality is insane.  Can anyone else confirm this?

Last time I visited, which was a while ago, it was around $5 USD per gram if I remember correctly.  (This was before the euro, to give you an idea of how long ago.)  Quality was insanely good.

Yes, quality.

Very good point to bring up is that strict production guidelines would assure a safe product.

I have considered with the cheap and available synthetic compounds; what would stop a producer from beefing up shitty weed synthetically??

Or, Taking a pound, extracting all the Good Quality Natural resins for hash and infusing the drained buds with $50 worth of jwh as selling as brick weed?

Seriously, This shit NEEDS to be legalized; if for nothing else, quality control.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.  Half a loaf is better than none.

Without trying to dissect every argument of the smokers who are against Prop 19, this pretty much sums up my response. These people want to have their cake and eat it too. It's a huge step forward if this passes. Do people really think the "weed is legal, do whatever the fuck you want with it" law is going to pass any time this century without a few steps in between? This is only California we're talking about. If/when the federal government decides to legalize cannabis they aren't going to just copy CA law verbatim. They'll draft up their own legislation at which point parts of the CA law will be either null and void or rewritten to reflect the more lax state of affairs. This NEEDS to pass for their to be hope of true legalization any time soon. CA needs to set an example. It's sad that some of the people who claim to care so much about this are letting greed get the best of them.

Every co-op I go to tells me to vote no on this, for various reasons.  I smile, nod, make satirical comment to amuse, buy meds, leave.  I know I'll help vote this one in.  My friends will too.  No need to advertise if you talk to people.....

The black market usually inflates prices, as you are paying for risk and more middlemen.

You probably wouldn't be able to trade for it though

As I understand it from 19's text counties will have to enact regulations permitting commercial sales. Think it'll take long?

I just sent out this email to all of my friends and family, and would encourage you to do the same:

Quote:

Friends & Family!

I just wanted to take a moment to encourage everyone to speak with their own friends and families about this important issue.

Voting against Proposition 19 would maintain a status quo that directly hurts tens of thousands of people in California every year who face legal consequences on account of the prohibitionary laws governing their personal use of marijuana.  It is an absolute travesty that our financially strapped state has been forced to continue this strain on our entire criminal justice system, just to hunt down and prosecute non-violent marijuana offenders.  Our state legislature recognized this fact when Governor Schwarzenegger signed SB 1449 into law last week, effectively reducing the penalty for public use of pot from a misdemeanor (requiring a court appearance and criminal record) to an infraction (which is the same class as a parking ticket - no court appearance, no court costs, and no criminal record).

Beyond that, people who fear these laws against cannabis will often turn to less safe legal alternatives such as the synthetic JWH compounds found in K2 and Spice over the counter herbal blends, which have been reported to produce adverse health affects and have a very short history of use.  Untainted marijuana on the other hand is extremely low in toxicity and holds a long history of safe use.

Please remember to vote yes on Proposition 19, and forward this email to family and friends who may have a misunderstanding of the real issues here.  The latest polls are showing passable support for proposition 19, but the only poll that matters is the one on November 2nd!

Some interesting and related commentary:

I hope everyone is enjoying the rain!

Thanks for reading,
~Mike
