BULK Steam pasteurize tek
    #13100587 - 08/25/10 04:16 PM (2 years, 8 months ago)

This is taken from Akira's tek, just has my little tweaks on it. So here we go!
Huge Coleman 5 day cooler. I think its the 50 gal, some know them as Xtreme. Be willing to drill holes in it. These are around $60 at Wal-Mart, I bought mine this spring for the boat, just sold the boat so yay for me.
Wagner 705 power steamer (the standard for steam pasteurize tek's right now)
2 or more meat thermometers.
10 feet copper pipe. I wanted soft copper (comes in a "spool") but hard (rigid) copper was on sale so I used this
Drill and 1/8th bit
Tubing - give you the sizes below
2 Shut off valves
Some random connectors - See below

Take your pipe and cut it in half, bend each in a U shape (this is a bitch with rigid copper, it will not be pretty)
One U will not have any holes drilled. This U will have steam run through it, the same concept of a steam heater in some homes.
Drill a hole big enough for the copper pipe to fit through the cooler. I like to have the intake side higher than the exhaust side so water condensation will run out of the pipes. http://
See the pipe with some heat tape on it? That is the pipe that steam just passes through.
Now, the steam will go into the heat pipe, and where it exits, attach a hose to a T fitting. THE BLACK HOSE IS WHERE THE STEAM COMES OUT OF THE HEAT PIPE. It then has two options controlled by the end user.

Take the secondary pipe and dill some holes in it. I recommend drilling very few holes on the side closest to the intake.

So now, the steam will come into this pipe, heat it, and exit into the T valve. Now from the T valve, it will have two options. It can just vent into the atmosphere, or go to our next step.
Drill a hole for our second pipe. This pipe should have plenty of holes in it. This is used to heat our cooler with lightning speed. As you can see in the pic, we can adjust how much steam goes into our secondary pipe. Just open the secondary valve, close the vent valve, and all steam will be routed from the heat pipe into the steam pipe. I originally just used the steam pipe, and this mother got to 200+ in there! Then I tried just the heat pipe.... little over 120.. no good either. With both, once my temp is at 160 I just vent all the steam after it passes through the heat pipe, keeps temps at 156-160! If your under a heavy load, just send more steam back through the steam pipe, infinitely adjustable.

The meat thermometers from Walmart fit perfect in the cup holders, so I put one in each side. I will be getting a remote one to stick in my pasteurizing bags to monitor temps.

I promised I would get to the hose/pipe/fitting/valve sizes. I took the hose that came with the steamer to Ace Hardware. Cut the hose in half, and there are actually two hoses, an inner hose and an outer hose. Get a barb fitting for the inner hose so you can reconnect it at the desired length. Others have just chopped the hose so they don't have to use the end fitting. I like the threaded end, so I bought a fitting that screws into the end, and has a barb on the other. I used a chunk of washing machine supply hose to go over the barb. The washing machine hose fits inside standard garden hose, which slides over copper pipe. Now the barb also fits inside the copper pipe, but I found it to slide out too easily. That's how I choose my pipe size, just took the hose with me (cut in half) and checked everything. Get a barbed valve to fit into your hosing (the hosing that goes on the copper pipe) And I highly recommend hose clamps, though I am not using them at the moment.

I will eventually buy new copper pipe, and sotter (sp) in 90 degree fittings for the turns, and make this pretty. I also have thought about just using the soft copper "spool", but have used this in plumbing and if you bend to a kink, it rips.

Problems with my design;
Bending the pipe. At every bend, it kinked. I made all my bends, then with a big flat headed hammer, hammered on the top and bottom of the kink until they were open enough to let steam flow through.

Height room. Without smooth bends after the pipe enters the cooler, the pipes take up more head room than absolutely necessary. Getting the pipes as close to the bottom of the cooler is important.

Uneven heat. The intake side runs about 2-3 degrees hotter than the far side. This is why insulation tape is on the heat pipe on the intake side.

I welcome all suggestions, I have not finished this completely yet, still need shelving. I want to have the pipes all pretty before I get to that.

And if I ever wanted, I could, in theory, seal this back up and use it as a cooler again.

Some more pictures, to help get a good idea.

I was going for a heat transfer, PVC would work fine (high heat rated) for the steamer section. This is still a work in progress, I want to get the piping right close to the bottom and cover with some sort of shield, for nice even heat and no risk of hot spots on my substrate bags.

no offence to your tek
but it looks messy and alot harder then cut and poke a hose in a hole

heres an attachment http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8683233#8683233

None taken. Like I said, I give Akira credit, and he gave credit to the other site. It is messy at this point, but what I like about this is a very controllable heating system. I can adjust either valve to get within 2-3 degrees of whatever temperature I wish. This sucker still has steam to spare, I am confident that if I wanted, I could easily hook up another (although smaller) cooler.

Sure!! I am not very experienced with camera editing, nor confident on film :uhoh: Can I post vids here? I hate youtubes rules, but could do that if there is no other way.

I've seen some pretty hefty PVC tubing at Home Depot.  How would it not withstand more heat than that "Plastic looking" black hose that comes out of the Wagner 705?

Very true shroomy, that stuff from Wagner is nothing more than the stuff you can get to organize your home entertainment cables, or under the hood of your car. I was originally worried about some chemical leaching from all the plastics, until I figured it won't matter much since I'm using bags within the cooler.

How long have you had this contraption running? I used to use a 705 for steam pasteurization in something about this size, but found that it was inadequate when the ambient temp was less than 60. It was unable to bring the temps over 100 in those circumstances.

I haven't had to run it in the winter yet, but I have a basement I can work out of, so it shouldn't be a problem. If you have a 5 day cooler rig that you can't use below 60, try a 100 watt bulb in there for an hour before you use it. (Be sure to take it before you steam it, sounds like a dumb thing to say, but hey...) And if that's the case, at least you didn't use a Rubbermaid, that wouldn't hold much heat in the winter.

i use my rubbermaid all year round. ive had it for 3 years no problems. trick is feed hose to bottom lay a towel down pack in bags and lay another towel over it. no problems. and no fancy design, and it gets cold here. i like the kiss method "keep it simple stupid" of life.

i stick the hose in the very bottom of the tub. then i place a towel over the hose. then pack 1 gallon bags of sub into the tub on top of the towel. then once finished i place another towel on top. i stick a rag in the hole around the hose to keep steam from escaping. im doing this tomorrow i could post pictures. it's really that simple.

i used 50/50 coir/verm, 50/50 h.poo/verm both works great

One gallon doesnt really seem like alot.  If it would work on like 50-100 lbs of substrate then I would probably make one.  Cuase my PC holds like 20lbs of substrate alone.

Ok, here is a 5 min vid for anyone who wants to see. And if you wait until the end, although admittingly off topic, I have my other summer project on there.... Anyone who wants info on that let me know.  In order we have, 1/4 stick, M-80's, then finally a full stick. If you don't want to watch about the steamer, just skip to 4:24 for the said off topic-ness

Requsted Video

Total respect for making that video!  Not many here that would do that.  Loved the Fun explosive stuff at the end.  I love exploding stuff myself!  5 for your brother!

Anyone else spend so much time here that when using other sites, especially craigslist, you click the picture expecting the magnifying glass to show up and make the picture bigger?
