i made a corn cob pipe a few weeks ago. i was bored so i went out to the garden and pulled a cob off.
then i got a hammer and screwdriver and tapped the screwdriver into the side of the cob, making the bowl.
then i twisted a piece of cane off a plant and stuck it into the bowl.
it smells and tastes like a campfire but

you thought about bamboo figure you could make a really simple straight pipe , check out bushcraft type sites for ways to manipulate wood , im sure you'll come up with something.

you can make one, takes some time though.
look at the designs of tradicional pipes for a start, like sebsis and such
choose a hard wood, lick it, if it`s bitter boil it before making the pipe, otherwise you`ll smoke bitter smoke.
start with a simple design, the shorter and the thicker the stem the better because you`ll have to drill a hole through it. there are wood drills that are longer that are good for this.
use beeswax or carnauba wax for finish, anything with polimers or synthetic components migh get burned and inhaled, which wouldn`t be so good.
in the start every pipe smokes harsh, you have to wait for it to build the `cake` to smoke well, that`s the thin layer of charcoal in the bowl.
i have made some pipes myself, mostly long ones, churchwarden or sebsi tipes. feel free to ask but i don`t know much.
and good luck man, smoking out of a pipe you`ve made is awesome.

sure, but i`m considering just non-toxic oily woods that could alter the taste.there`s no simple way to make a guide to safe woods, specially because the ones i have available are different from his.
boiling is a process that adds complexity, but the same is done to briar pipes, you have to control how fast it dries back and how dry it is before you start making the pipe that should reduce any risks.
but i realize you`re right, i simplified to much, you should always give much more thought to the wood when making a pipe and consult some literature on it.

If you whiddle like I do, boiling also helps soften the wood. Better for carving.

Cut a hole in a toilet paper roll (without the toilet paper), put a piece of aluminum foil on it, tape it up if necessary and use a needle to put holes in the Al foil to make it act like a bowl and screen.

I've been a glassblower for a few years. I make glass (tobacco) pipes all the time but in highschool I just Macgyvered something when I needed it.
Dont use foil.

Most of the time I gather my wood from nature, and bust out a crazy piece using the natural shapes and designs inherent in it. When I don't use nature gathered pieces, I like to make them out of purple heart wood, which is very strong and sometimes difficult to shape, they tend to sell well too. For some reason, these pipes made of purple heart are always my favorite. I'm currently working on a his and hers for me and my girlfriend. 
A 'widdlin knife, an electric hand drill(For the stem), is basically all that is needed. I personally like to use a dremel, add fine details and designs, if I push hard it will burn the wood which gives it more character.
If one does not like wood, you can always settle for clay, I gather mine from nature and just shape and broil them in the oven, usually turn hard as stone, can't break them with my hands, throwing them against a rock is another story though.
Also, non-toxic self drying clay works well for pipes.

ok go to any store that sells things like tooth paste and stool softeners, find the eye area and then locate the eye droppers, grab pack usually 2 for a buck and pay for them, then walk out side and remove the packageing, find a comfortable place and pack them up, glass one hitter none the less, 2 4 a buck! fuck tinfoil, or any metal, clay is cool, petosky stone was my last project.
here is another, find an apple, poke a hole through it, pack her up, keep her in da fridge she last a week , dont eat it!
glass alteration, (not to say blowing for thats a true art)
dont diy this unless you are fullly sure you can work with molten glass and torches.
ya wanna have fun blow your own pipe, go buy glass eyedroppers 2 for a buck, then get a simple hand held torch, heat the glass slowly and cool slowly, when the glass gets soft(check by carefully poking, eventually you can see when its hot enough)then carefully work the glass, if your tools get too hot theyll stick to the glass, a pair of plyers and a blunt phillips screwdriver will work.
one can put a slight tapered bowl at one end and vawala you have a cheep ass chillome that will most likely only last an oz
i work on my stove, with oven preheated all the way500+ i place the glass in the oven immediately after molding it, then bake it, backing the temp to 0 over 2 hours or so, this helps make it last longer..
there is much more than what i stated but it should get ya going, its fun,
blowing the eyedroppers is possible though renders the bowls fragile as all hell, christmass bulbs tho are cool to diy
