You can find them on Amazon, but not for the cheap price anymore. I'm so pissed at myself for not getting the Arcade during the few weeks it was available for 150.

These new xboxes should not have RROD problems. It also has a larger hard drive and built in wifi(the microsoft wifi accessory costs around 100 by itself).
The price is also very good, about the same price as a regular xbox.
My brother got an Xbox360 Slim and gave me his old one.

The big deal is that the new ones probibly have more durable chips and probibly use less electricity to reduce overheating (I think 360s were invented when water cooling systems were coming in style). No RROD, no No-video problems (aka no more frying the solders on your CPUs/GPUs).
I have a hard drve from my old 360 will it plug into a slim?
Also you can get cooling units for old style 360s, I saw 2 styles at the store the other day, one pumping cold air in on the CPU side (opposite of the hard drive) and another that was a supercharged fan that fit on the back. I assume they plugged into the USB port. I'm pretty sure that if you use either one and your not afraid of cracking your unit open you should disconnect and remove the original fan. It would make the cold air cooling unit more effective (though sealing up the air holes near the input couldn't hurt either) and the super fan on the back will probibly just burn out the original fan and it's blades will impede air more than anything.
I'd be wary of buying used. There are apparently good fixes for the solder problem (RROD/no-video), but there is also a real cheap method called an x-clamp removal, where you remove some clamps that are (apparently supposed to be) bending the motherboard. You re-thermal paste the unit (a huge waste of money) and overheat just the non-responsive chip to remelt the solders. I did this and it got my 360 working again... for a month and a bit (using heavily at the time). If you do a shit job it will last for 2 weeks max. A pro will use a device which heats the solders up to a specific temperature to re-flow the connections properly. If you can know you got a re-flowed or re-balled system buy it, it's probibly bout as good as new, if not don't.

You can more than likely play regular games on it. Can on any other 360 so why not this one?

I'm mostly a PC gamer, but I play bad company on it, borderlands, forza 3, and that's pretty much it. I played enough modern warfare 2 on my brother's account before I got mine that I'm sick of the game. I also don't really care too much about gamerscore points. My brother plays games that he doesn't even like sometimes just for that.

For what it's worth, i was told by a gamer that owns the new Slim, and it is backwards compatible. You have to download a driver, and not every game is backwards compatible. He said the list of games and driver was at xbox.com.

That's how the regular Xbox 360 is, AFAIK.

The xbox 360 slim is gonna play all xbox 360 games, it's just a rebuilt console not a new platform...

I doubt it. Maybe if you dismantled the hard drive and turned it into an external HDD via usb connection.
There are no tray things on the top and bottom(or sides) for the old hard drives to connect to. But the xbox360 uses the same hard drive as PCs and external HDDs, so I'm not about to say it's impossible.

I don't fear opening a unit obviously but I may prefer an old one with cooling if I can get it cheaper, particularly if I have to mess with an external hard drive setup. A xbox slim with usb cable exiting the side connected to a hard drive duct taped onto the unit... it just seems kinda goofy even if I use colour matching duct tape.

You don't have to ducttape it man. Just find a compatible external enclosure if you want it to look pro.
Xbox supports USB storage now(even the original 360) so I imagine it would work flawless.
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=92&name=External-Enclosures
I'm pretty sure the xbox HDD's are 2.5inch because 3.5inch wouldn't fit in the xbox HDD enclosure.
