(not so) Little (kinda) Brown Mushroom ID Por Favor
#12891788 - 07/13/10 11:10 AM (2 years, 11 months ago) |

Habitat: Southwest Florida, in the grass, beside my office, still in the ground but semi dried out. When I picked it the cap margin was still nearly attached to the stem, couldn't see the gills at all. Gills: Brown, crowded Stem: About 2.5" long, turned very dark, nearly black, hollow and leathery Cap: About 1" wide, brown, darker in the center, lighter toward the edge
Smells exactly like I remember the actives smelling but that was a long time ago.

Probably too late for a print, it was pretty dry and leathery when I found it. Any way to manipulate a print?

No, it isn't.
Bret may have nailed it with L. caerulescens.

I sure don't think so from what little I can find of L. Caerulescens. The cap didn't discolor at all and the gills seem to be the wrong color. It is probably something much more common

It is Chlorophyllum molybdites and it is poisonous.
Please be more careful with your ID's.

I don't think it's Chlorophyllum molybdites. They don't stain blue like that.
Seems closer to this. http://www.mushroomexpert.com/lepiota_caerulescens.html
This is why you spore print mushrooms btw.
Lepiota viridiflavoides, described from Florida, also bruises blue, but has yellow gills and flesh.

FWIW the stem is pretty much black, not blue.
I think it is most likely C. Moly but there are a few things that made me wonder such as the stem discoloration, hollow stem and brown gills.

Whatever color you want to call it, Chlorophyllum molybdites don't have black/blue staining stems. They turn reddish.

I didnt ID it. I was under the impressions that all mushrooms, toxic or otherwise, that bruised blue contain psilocin. Just because a mushroom contains psilocin isn't an indicator of weather it is good to eat. I didnt suggest the guy to eat it at all, I suggested he take a spore print so he can properly ID it.

Which mushrooms containing psilocin are not safe to eat?
You probably shouldn't argue the point with a mod/TI when what you said could easily lead someone into eating the mushroom. If it is C. molybdites he would get quite sick. Alan was just telling you to be careful, which you were not. If you don't know what you are talking about, then please do not post it here. I'm not trying to be a dick, you were just in the wrong.

No, this is not true at all. There are numerous other chemicals in mushrooms which can cause bluing reactions, and then there are some mushrooms which are just plain blue.

Actually, it is. I don't know of any psilocybin containing mushrooms which are toxic.

It is not C. molybdites. The mushroom is too small, the stem is too blue, the cap shape is wrong, I don't see the normal scaly patches, and I do not see an annulus.
It does look like a Lepiota, but with the age of the mushroom and it being all dried out, along with the insufficient photo resolution, I can not say what species it is.
Might be worth saving it... Is it rotten yet? If not, dry it out fully. It is interesting.

I have no idea what it is but he C. Moly ID seems logical only because they are so common. That being said some of the characteristics don't seem to mesh?

Looking at the GREEN gills and close up shots of the cap, I am quite convinced that they are, in fact, Chlorophyllum molybdites.

I'm buying this ^.

Caphill, in light of the new photos, I am going to have to eat my words, and say that now it does look like C. molybdites.
The patches on the cap are now clear, and the stem is not actually blue, just old and dark. I guess the annulus came off. It is really small for that species, but I can't let that be the only reason. With the conical cap shape, large (not broken up) patch on the cap, and small size, I reckon it is just a young one that dried out.
SWFL, thanks for getting better photos! It makes the process much easier.
