A lethal shooting by a West Melbourne Police officer and Brevard County Sheriff's deputy that was caught on a dashboard video camera appears to back up law enforcement claims they acted in self-defense.



The officer and deputy shot and killed 40-year-old Michael Pagan of Palm Bay on the Eau Gallie Boulevard northbound exit ramp from Interstate 95 after he ran at them waving a knife, according to police reports. The incident occurred June 16.

On the video, an officer can be heard five times yelling, "Drop it!" before the sound of gunfire.

"I thought he had a gun. I thought he was going to shoot me," an officer is heard saying. "I saw the knife in my light when he ran at me."

The video, released by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office on Friday afternoon, shows a car being driven by Pagan change lanes without signaling as it travels west on U.S. 192 toward the interstate. The driver appears to have trouble staying in his lane before running a red light. A West Melbourne police car following the car activates its lights and attempts to pull Pagan over.

But instead of stopping, Pagan turns his car northbound onto I-95.

In the video, Pagan's car comes to a stop several yards short of a traffic light at the end of the Eau Gallie exit ramp off I-95. Eight seconds before 2:14 a.m., Pagan can be seen jumping out of his vehicle, waving a knife as he briskly walks toward the police car and out of view of the video camera. Voices can be heard ordering him to drop his weapon.

BCSO, the West Melbourne Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are completing an investigation into the shooting.

"The video footage in this case provided investigators specific evidence of Mr. Pagan's actions and the actions the officers were forced to take to protect themselves," said Wayne Ivey, FDLE resident agent in charge for Brevard County. "Incidents such as this case and the recent deaths of the two Tampa Police officers demonstrate the significant dangers that law enforcement officers face every day."



According to police reports, a West Melbourneofficer attempted to stop Pagan with a Taser before another officer and deputy fired their guns.

None of the names of the officers involved nor the deputy have been released. None of the law enforcement officers were injured. The shooting investigation is expected to make its way to the Brevard County State Attorney's Office next week for review.

Pagan was on probation following a 12-year stint in a state prison for burglary.

I'm kinda stuck right now, and not by choice.  But hopefully this time next year I will either be in Boulder or getting ready to move to Boulder!!  you do any snowboarding? I AM a snowboarder, did it all my life, and miss it too much. Hence why I'm moving to Boulder. Surfing is pretty similar and I have found it to be just what I need to get me by since I don't have snowboarding here. If you don't snowboard, you may want to give it a shot.

take it from somebody who's BEEN in both knife fights and gun fights (NOT SHOOTOUTS, GUNFIGHTS AND SHOOTOUTS ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT); I'd rather fight a guy with a gun over a guy with a knife any day of the week.  a gun shoots in one direction, thats it. knives slice around in all directions.

you'd be macoroni you sayin that if you had a knife and i had a gun you could actually move faster then my gun? The quickest gun slingers can get off at least three bullets with head quality shots in under seconds it doesnt take a genius.

If that guy was shot once he would have came to his sense's, he's not a fucking dog that just going to try and kill your ass, I mean i see how cops are on the line, but cops do get into shoot outs, those guys are pussies and wouldn't last ten seconds in a hood WITHOUT their badges.

I'm not from the hood. I'm not "hard". I'm not a thugette. I listen to rock music, dress in normal clothes that fit me, and don't walk down the street picking fights for no reason

I have had guns pulled on me by dumb drunk rednecks who couldnt take a joke. one was in retaliation for squirting somebody with a water pistol, the other was some dude just trying to show off. I'm not a huge dude, but I'm fast, I'm smart, I'm observant, and I know how to handle myself. Both times the guns were pulled on me I was able to take control of the situation, get control of the firearm, and render it safe. All before either person had a chance to fire a single shot.
