God damn, you guys are about to be mind-blown, that is if you truly understand the vast greatness of what I'm about to unveil to you, musically. Guthrie Govan - Fast foward to just past a minute if you're impatient
His note selection and scale composition are unlike any others, he is unbelievably unique and shreds harder than anyone I can think of, Vie, Satriani, Malmsteen, even Gilbert and Loomis! -edit- ok maybe not Loomis :P Next:
If you are a fan of amazing acoustic guitar work, then look no further, a winner of multiple national canadian classical guitar contests, Ewan Hobson!

LOL
I take it you're not a guitarist/musician, because while he might have written some cool riffs, he's nothing compared to others, even people from his own time. I wouldn't even put him in the top 50, maybe 100.

i'm 100% positive that there are hundreds of guitarists able to play whatever he has written, including YYZ. No one has taken the time because they'd rather play something else most likely. I don't mean to bag on him too much but this thread is for "best guitarists"

i mean, listen to something like this, a mere freestyle guitar jam, by guthrie govan surpasses note selection, phrasing, implementing guitar techniques and general musical composition to something like that Alex wrote out.

yeah it is, but in this case it's pretty easily distinguishable that, taste aside, Guthrie Govan as a case in point example is a much better guitarist than Alex Lifeson, and subsequently due to his range in skill level, it's determinable that many others are too.

I don't want to get into an argument, but you just said, (adjectives aside) that "Guthrie Govan is a much better guitarist than Alex Lifeson"
That's a matter of taste. I'd like to hear the emotion displayed in Govan's versions of "YYZ", "Spirit of Radio", and "Limelight" as compared to Lifeson's.
No comparison, I'm QUITE sure!

Govan plays arpeggios in his own way in jazz fusion etc. In thrash or rock or whatever Malmstein plays arpeggios different but still way cool. Both artists are incredible! Music can be played for musicians, say to the fact of (technique) that musicians respect. And the average listener doesn`t share the same idea because he doesn`t know what it takes to play that shit.
Rollins band or black flag may play something nice to the ear for some, but as far as technique there's a huge freakin problem there! The situation between who rocks and who doesn't will always be split because you have listeners and you have musicians. This is where a good musician comes in because he can show his technique and make it sound good at the same time. The separation of true good and true technique or true ear sits hear. As far as I am concerned classical music kicks every ones ass because its the basis for the beginnings of every kind of good music you hear(not fucking rap and not country). I could hardly argue who is better than the other because it would shut my mind from other types of music which would be wrong because music is a collaboration of others works. What makes music really great is ones ability to intemperate and change in scale, chord,or octave to how one feels In the 60s and 80s music was about feeling good but in the 85`s it started to get more into technique due to the faster and more schooled or evolved ways of music. Classical still kicked everyones ass because you could take any classical score and turn it into thrash blues etc.it doesnt matter. If you were to argue a title to a thread than I guess I would have to say it was about technique and ability though I still love the shit out of rush zep etc. The evolution of music today is soo much better than it was yesterday though.Should we dedicate that to the fact that people are actually paying attention to the hard earned works of Bach?Fuck yea and other old greats that tought us how to rock!

Hell I know 13 year old kids that can play Jimis shit, and he changed the world of guitar. My point being better and best is all relative. Alex Lifeson fucking wails

I wouldn't call Alex Lifeson a pioneer in the same regards to other players including jimi hendrix who was quite a deal more influential.
And all "pionering" and "feelings" or whatever bullshit card you want to call to defend him, there are myriads of more creative and interesting guitarists than him that now exist today.
in my opinion, of course.

Well then how do you define skill? Is this a competition of who can play arpeggios the fastest? Who can play the fastest scales in different modes? Is it who can play the most notes in BPM? Whos got the best "style"? Style in jazz? Ass rock? Is there a mathematical equation youve discovered where you add together points earned in different categories?

How many different levels are there in "bullshit feelings"? Guitar isnt math based on arpeggios in BPM. Hell Ive seen bass players tear it up more than the guitarists youve posted.

You have to be able to grasp the concept of music and learn to play before you can insert your own feeling into something. Yes or no? I mean you have negated feeling and math whats left bro? You should actually try and listen to some of Guthrie Govan and Ewan Hobson's material before you make ridiculous claims like that. That statement is so ridiculous, because there is so much feel, technique and creativity in both of those players music and its actually pretty sad that you can't hear/see that, especially if your a musician, in particular, a guitarist.

In this magazine I got a while back there was a "battle of the axes" article.
Guitarists are rated on their chops, tone, originality, versatility and influence.
It also says their strengths/weaknesses.

Mike McCready, very underrated. Check out Mad Season, it was his and Layne Staley's side project. (Used to love Pearl Jam, but I hold such a disdain for Eddie Vedder nowadays.) What he comes up with isn't necessarily the most complex, music, but it fucking hits the right chord (lol). Yellow Ledbetter show cases a little bit of it all. AND Little Wing is at the end of this video.
Go to about 3:30 for out stuff that is wonderful. Little wing starts at 4:30.
Hell, if you got a good alternative radio station near you, you might hear this song occasionally.

music is math! at its core, its just a series of formulas which work to create emotion in people. play a major third, and it sounds happy...make it flat and you've completely changed the tone of the song. i hate people who act like technique is a barrier to expression. 'feeling' is completely subjective.

Wrong Music is nowhere near math and never will be. Music is what you hear. And how it makes you feel. Technique is a barrier to expression
No one of the likes of man have gotten close to the soul of the greats like Jimi hendrix , Clapton, Jimmy page, I think alot of people forget about Jerry Garcia ...They all made there guitar talk to there audience as if it where there own voice. As if they where speaking.
NO ONE HAS ANY EXPRESSION ANY MORE!!! Guitarists now a days are nothing just a machine playing in the most perfect time and tempo....Music is not perfect and some of the most amazing experiences of man have been in the worst of times....Look at woodstock and the Vietnam war. ---
There is no more emotion its all distorted sound now and drum machines ...nothing is real or pure all these recording are so over produced you might as well call it a motion picture.
Music now adays is alot more about image and status in society Who's got the best breasts The tightest ass The sexiest body .
Music?? This is music
Oh god sweet emotion we have lost...

Prove what I have said wrong then???
I bet you can't because its fucking true.
How you can even relate music to a bunch of formula's is absurd FORMULA'S HAVE FUCKING RULES DERF! Music has NO RULES NO LIMITS IT IS WHAT IT IS. But sometimes could be much more if we all just come together.
Emotion comes from related experiences to how the song produces it self. Most people cry over some songs why>? Because they can relate. And I think we can all relate to feeling...
Why do you think Led zepplin is played over and over on the radio
Why do you think Darkside of the moon is still the best selling album for over 30+ years ??

Go ahead..Ive got yer back all the way on this one. Alex is up there with most creative fuckin awesome guitarists ever. End of argument. Sure hes no John Petrucci, but neither was Hendrix. Hell I know 13 year old kids that can play Jimis shit, and he changed the world of guitar. My point being better and best is all relative. Alex Lifeson fucking wails
Playing jimis shit note for note is not playing Jimi shit No ones come close to what hes done just copied it. And anyone can practice tabs over and over note for note It takes a different person to take what you hear and make it your own.
John pertucci give me a break. Steve Vai is the farthest all go to any kind of guitar like that. John's got skill but I believe his technique gets in the way of emotion. I would listen to Rush over Pertucci, Vai, satch any day.

well I used to say steve vai and yngwe malmsteen and all them were the best but only because they played the fastest. Every guitarist has different style there is no best. I like stevie ray vaughan, he makes that guitar cry like no other. but thats the blues

yeah but there's a difference between the artist who wrote the piece and the listeners who interpret in their own way. the artists are aware of what they are doing, they don't just start crying and out comes a beautiful piece. they know the theory, they know the rhythm, and these two things are tangible, mathematical entities. pick up your guitar...play a major 2nd, then a minor second interval...play a perfect fifth and compare it to a perfect fourth. these relationships between notes begat different emotions in the audience, however at their core they're formulas.
you're like the people who have difficulty understanding that humans, who love, cry, and feel, are nothing more than the culmination of millions of cells.

Typical musical formula 3/4 4/4 etc. Imagine a piano string that is 12 inches long. A 6 inch string, half as long, is going to make the exact same note, only an octave higher. So if the first is a C (do) the next is also a C (do) only at the next end of the do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si-do scale. An 8 inch string would make the 5th, which is a very important note for nearly all chords. In the same scale, this would be a G. A 9 inch string would make the 4th, also a very important note for many chords. So basically, I'm telling you that you can apply simple fractions to a string and get notes that are valuable for making music. This blew my mind when I first realized it. This is why you can put your finger on certain parts of guitar strings without pressing down, and make things called harmonics. If you put your finger 1/4 a way down a string, and play a harmonic, the string will actually vibrate in four different areas, but be completely still at the 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4ths point. It makes me laugh when someone sits down and writes a piece of music.I ask them what time signature and what octave or key are you going to play it in?They go (Idont know but it shreds dude).Yea you just wrote a piece of music that is mathematically in time and complex and you know nothing about music you simply followed laws that you didn't even know were there its called time signature. Every note in every measure has a law that it follows weather it be a half note or a whole note, the time signature sets the laws of music into motion and the notes abide by the law, or the piece of music is called SHIT. Hip Hop and shit like that tries to push the laws of music but what they are doing in essence is abiding by it full on. You can hear a rappa like busta or snoop cramming words into a measure but what he is really doing is speeding the measure up doubling the time and coming out with an even # in the end. Mathematical equations to writing music http://members.cox.net/mathmistakes/music.htm http://www.musicmasterworks.com/WhereMathMeetsMusic.html http://www.woodpecker.com/writing/essays/math+music.html http://graham.main.nc.us/~bhammel/MUSIC/compose.html So ya see math does play a huge part in music not only by the vibrations or Mhz that people say are pleasing to the ear,but as well the structure of music follows the laws in order to write great compositions. To argue that this is untrue is simply fucking stupid.

exactly! the greeks were figuring this shit out thousands of years ago.
you're oversimplifying the beauty of music by saying that just any fat bastard on drugs, feeling blue can whail. hendrix, page, garcia had a much more acute knowledge of music.
in fact i peg hendrix as the most technical player of all, above steve vai or shawn lane. just all the tiny subtleties in his style makes exact replication of his music extremely difficult.

I utterly enjoyed all the music from back in the day because it had great fucking feeling. Today I enjoy the complexity of things and ones ability to incorporate feeling as well Its a huge challenge because there are so many things going on wich most would say" Hey isnt there a more to the point method"? Yea but then we would be playing grunge A lot of people think they know about music just because they can play it but if they actually sat down and tried to compose it they would be utterly lost. Its just like that go daddy race car driver skank. Yea shes a driver but she know absolutely nothing about fixing that car. Musicians are the same way in that:they need other people to write music first so they can either play it or tear it apart and jam it into something else that they think they wrote. Scruffy owes me half an hour of time for writing all this shit out.

What exactly where those greeks trying to figure out the oh so odd years ago>??? How to express emotion in music? How to play how you feel?
Im sorry I can just never accept the fact that music is anywhere near math far from it man...at least to my understanding
Music is to be alive i believe sound is truly life in the midst of the air we stand in it takes up as much space as we do it all depends how we explore those spaces that define our music less and less people out there are going for the experience and concerned about reaping in the awards which follow in the wake. I believe we must first create the wake of our own then just to ride in the field others roam...
Im sorry but back then people lived for something they appreciate things a hell of alot more might not have had alot but its what yeah had and that's all yeah needed now adays people take even the most basic thing's for fucking granted and its fucking disgust All of that had alot to do with the brother/sisterhood and souls of the last 60 years of music
Now adays its all about Independence and we rely on quick quirky remarks and abusive behavior towards others, groups, people, to sell what we call music. No ones doing it to keep it together but to separate the big spenders from the small ones. Its a business now and playing for the sake of playing died a fucking hell of along time ago.

I just turned 50. So I can say that I was there when all the love and peace shit was going on. At that time people were frustrated over the war and rich college kids were rebelling against everything and there were so many fucking things going on,so much shit to write about and the ability to screw up in life and not permanently be screwd. So many open spaces to explore. Drugs were a huge influence on music then, more so than being actually educated. The feelings for music were there and will never be recreated today in the same manor. Record companies didn't have the power over bands that they have today either.Music today has been largely influenced by the flash in the pan pop rock mentality spurned on by greedy Jewish labels. Most all of the great music that has been created today can only be heard on the street or in some dank corner bar. We have seriously lost something these days call it heart or lack of creativity or whatever. What you are missing in this world is a sound that we will never get back. maybe if times get really really really bad it will generate some kind of music reminescent of what we all used to like.
Todays woodstock go figure

Sorry just a personal pet peeve of mine inherited from my Dad but.... You weren't there, you were 10 years too late to the party. My Dad (early 60's) dislikes how people try to jump onto the 60's culture train and claim they were there when their year of birth completely negates that being possible. It's not so much that he finds it annoying as he find its humorous. I mean hell, you were 10 when the 60s ended.
As for music not being math, that's madness talk. There is a lot of math in music and anyone that doesn't see it probably doesn't play music. Especially modern orchestral music is very math heavy.

I like the guitar work on the Dinosaur Jr. song Said the People. The solo starts a little after 3 minutes, well theres a solo 3 minutes later thats a bit different also. It's not the best solo but it sounds very 'honest' to me. Almost like the Zappa solo at the end of Joes Garage, the slow emotional one. Zappa was a beast though in most guitar forms.

Not saying I was there at Woodstock I grew up in the 60`s and was brought up in that era listening to all the music first hand as opposed to about 90 percent of the people in here. Which is probably pretty sad because I`m still hanging out in here where as most of you would probably think you personally would be doing something a hell of a lot more adult with your time if you were 50. Huh I actually fucking saw bands like led zeppelin so whatever.I`m not gonna try to make any more points in here Its like argueing with my kids for fuck sakes.
