Reasons that people want to believe doomsday prophecies

Let's ignore any one specific prophecy and talk about this I think people like to believe that this is like a movie with an exciting ending plus the fact that, if a prophecy is fulfilled, it implies the existence of some higher order I feel an urge within myself to believe in doomsdays and all that, but I try to avoid that kind of irrationality People have been spewing end-of-the-world prophecies for thousands of years, and I've yet to see one with worthwhile credibility I've seen a lot of History Channel fear mongering, but you gotta realize they make these shows for the money, not because they're trying to save us

I would say there is an additional need to let go of the tough responsibilities of life. When there isn't much future left, you don't have to worry about much.

Maybe it's just one alien who directed this movie himself and he has no alien friends cuz he's the only alien so he's been looping this movie for an eternity
Since the people in the movie aren't alone he can distract himself from the fact that he is alone for eternity by pretending to be you

My dad believes that this was one of George W Bush's major malfunctions I don't doubt that he thought he was executing God's will to conquer Islam This could also explain his apparent lack of concern for the environment No need to save the world if Jesus is gonna come and do it for us, right?
One of the biggest problems in politics imo is that everyone wants to be the big hero so they try to take big elaborate actions to make a big elaborate name for themselves when really they just need to sit down at their desk and do their fucking job

We derive excitement from this cyclical human drama, where the mood alterates between hope and despair. There's struggle to attain or hold onto something, there's apparent gain, there's apparent loss, despair, rekindling of hope, struggle with renewed vigor, and so on.
This is a very basic dynamic, and it can be projected to almost any kind of a scenario to give it more drama. Hence mate seeking becomes an epic tale of love and loss, war becomes a Tom Clancey novel, climate change becomes Global Warming, an idea becomes a religious war, etc. The underlying currents of cultural evolution are manic and eschatological in nature.

very true
It's like the difference between life being a TV series or Life The Movie A movie has got to have all it's plot points wrapped up and explained by the end but a TV series can keep going without any big final conclusion, just little conclusions here and there I think I'd prefer the TV series. The show is entertaining in itself and I don't need a big final conclusion. Besides, it's just starting to get good

I recommend Battlestar Galactica, though it can get a bit ridiculous at times.

Well, depending upon the Prophesy, maybe people want to believe them also, because they are True? And they possibly intuit/sense that they are True?

Maybe each of our TV shows episodes, has the intensity and outplay of a Movie?

The closest we would come to actual doomsday could be a few things.
All out global nuclear war. And even then there would be survivors, whether it be in bunkers, and many years of evolutionary and technological adaptation.
Asteroid. again survivors, though a large enough one could potentially knock the earth further away from or closer to making this place completely uninhabitable.
Genocidal aliens, most unlikely, but you never know what kind of twisted creatures could be out there and the tech they harness.
or 3 - 5 billion years from now as the sun's power wanes.
Putting a date on these things seem folly. Religion serves us judgement days, comings/returns of messiahs, the advent of maitreya, etc.... There is no doubt that one day we'll be all gone, or gone as humans as we know it... i often wonder what evolution has instore for us. Religions have been claiming the end times are upon us for millenia... "the signs are there", heh.

The funny thing is, that the End of Days, or the Doomsday, or the misunderstanding of what an Apocalypse is, all create false perceptions of what many of the prophesies Actually were saying..
The True Meaning of - An Apocalypse "(Greek: Ἀποκάλυψις Apokálypsis; "lifting of the veil" or "revelation") is a disclosure of something hidden from the majority of mankind in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception, i.e. the veil to be lifted." ...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse
"The Maya priests, the celestial time-keepers of South America, referred to this period of transition as the “Age of Revealing.” The author of the Book of Revelation referred to it as a time of “Apocalypse.” This word connotes the removal of a leather cover and is a reference to the human persona or mask rather than to any other binding or cover." http://www.irishoriginsofcivilization.com/irishoriginsexcerpts/excerpts-intro2.html

it depends on what you mean by future. living in a america, lately i find it hard and kind of selfish to prepare for a future in which the economy that previous generations have relied on may not exist. i dont think we've ever been closer to global collapse than we are now.

Well i would like to start by saying this is my first ever post, in fact virtually any post i have ever made on the internet, i often look at pots and agree to or disagree to an opinion, perhaps even formulating an idea. probably someone is reading this post now and thinking a similar thing, but whatever... i digress. I'm not going to pour my hear and soul into a post because we all know you will never satisfy the picture in your head, but i do not need to explain that. I think humans generally are scared, it is like an elevated and expanded set of the same tools that make up "lower consciousness animals" we don't reinvent the wheel with our thought processes, we simply further evolve and complicate the same instincts, and mental perceptions of things, but still amongst our more developed responses we have our fear, like animals fear on a direct level, and i think we generally observe that we are as a race wanting to control, to impact and change, to experiment, to see our actions and their consequences, we like to see them in conjunction with our predictions of the future, it satisfies us i think ( i will try not to say that to much) so we see that the world will continue and things will change but we cannot predict the penultimate never mind the fucking ULTIMATE, so we are scared, there is no experimentation or prediction that can be rational or feasible, it is simply beyond our discovered comprehension.I feel that we have created many origins of the worlds end to satisfy this need, it is fun alto of the time, just random imaginative whims, but also religion (as an example0 has taken this imagination and multiplied it and applied it to be serious and fulfilling so that humans can continue to see our actions and their consequences, and make our predictions. i would love to debate this concept or rip it apart, whatever, i just wanted to make a CHUNKY first post, this is by no means my view exactly or what i believe, I'm just thinking it now and writing it...

As in, that we are so close to a collapse, maybe that is part of the reason people believe it is actually happening..
