My next project is a mono, and I have been trying read up on it but I am having difficult time figuring it out, so I would like to ask a few questions,
1. No misting? So how is it getting it's water? I assume u mix it in to the substrate u use?
2.also u mix like bulk substrate with like a few broken up colonized cakes? It says use the bird seed method but could I use brf?
Thanks

1) The substrate tends to create it's own humidity as the moisture evaporates from the surface of the substrate.I'd still fan,and I would still mist though.Use Damion5050's Coir Tek,you can find the link in my sig below.
2)Usually we use grain spawn (colonized rye, wild bird seed, popcorn, etc.) to add to the bulk substrate, but you can use crumbled PF cakes,it just takes a lot of 1/2 pint PF cakes to come up with the appropriate amount of spawn.
You can start reading more about monotub teks here and that link also contains links to four other monotub teks.

That's the kicker,I have yet to do a monotub. But,I do have most of my supplies.I have an 18 gallon tub,a 23 quart Presto PC,12 pack of wide mouth quart jars,8 quart bag of vermiculite, and polyfill.I'm just waiting on my MS syringes of Cambodian and Treasure Coast (and hopefully a Hillbilly print) and then I'm going to run to my local organic food store to pick up 5-7 lbs. of organic rye berries, then stopping by Ace Hardware to pick up some RTV silicone (so I can make self healing injection ports),and by petsmart to pick up my bricks of coco coir.
To find out how much substrate I needed I first decided I want to go with a 4" deep substrate layer. My tub does not have sides that are perpendicular to the ground (straight up and down) so I used a measuring tape and on the inside of the tub I measured up 4" from the bottom and made a mark. From that mark I measured the length and the width. My tub has a sticker on it that says it is 23.5" long x 17.5" wide but that is from the top of the tub.4 inches from the bottom it measures 18" long x 12" wide.
18" x 12" x 4" = 864 cubic inches.864 cubic inches = 14.961039 US quarts...we'll round that up to say 15 US quarts. That is the total amount of spawn and bulk substrate mixed together to get a 4" deep substrate.I want to use a 1:2 spawn:bulk ratio for faster colonization time so 5 quarts spawn + 10 quarts bulk substrate = 15 quarts total...bam,1:2 ratio and 4" substrate depth!
I'll be using Damion5050's Coir Tek (link in my sig below) because it seems really simple, and he also uses an 18 gallon tub etc.
His tek calls for one brick of coir,2 quarts of vermiculite, and 4 to 4.5 quarts of boiling water.Place the brick of coir and 2 quarts of vermiculite in the bottom of a clean 5 gallon bucket (or rubbermaid/sterilite tub) and then boil up 4 to 4.5 quarts of water, then dump on top of coir and vermiculite, place lid on the bucket or tub and let sit for 30 minutes to an hour.Come back, stir everything up real well, replace lid for another couple hours. When the temp of the coir/verm substrate has cooled down to below 80-90 dgrees fahrenheit at the center you can add your spawn.Either mix your spawn with the bulk substrate,or layer it...I think I am going to layer mine.
For the tub...you seen it in that link I gave you (and the links within that link).Make 2-3 1.5" to 2" holes on each long side of the tub about 1/2" above the substrates surface.Make 1-2 1.5" to 2" holes on each short side of the tub near the top.Place a trash bag in the bottom of the tub as a liner so when your substrate shrinks over time due to moisture loss it pulls the trash liner with it,eliminating true side pinning. But before you dump your substrate and spawn in,be sure to cut the bottom out of a similar sized tub and place that in the trash liner. This way, when you go to dunk after a flush your substrate won't fall apart/break when you go to pull it out of the tub by the trash liner to properly drain, because there will be support from the bottom you cut out and placed in the trash liner.
PF tek years ago when I first started was a breeze,I doubt this will be any harder.
To answer your question about yields from a monotub....genetics is what it's based on...but 4+ dry ounces seems to be the norm...some get more, some get less...but it's all about genetics.

Good deal on mentioning the Gypsum .This is actually an additive I've been contemplating on getting and using...I'll have to see if I have the money for it after getting the other supplies.

I just recently started adding some. I harden Plaster of Paris then smash it to powder, its the same thing. If you can get bagged gypsum do so.

Yeah,I read a few threads that mentioned hardening up some plaster of paris etc.
Horticultural Gypsum is easy to come by where I live...lots of nurseries,a few hydroponics shops.

Thanks,
They're small, but this is a mini-mono which is only about 1 1/2" deep. Its also MS.
The hybrids are still doing they're thing, nothing to report. I'm sure in the next couple days I'll see some activity.

That was probably off a hawaiian syringe I made, but looks nothing like.
I knocked up several jars with different strains, PES Amazonian, Equador, Hawaiian and also PE. Iv spawned a couple PE jars to manure and never got PE..
