That patterning may be similar looking-- but I think unless we are expert herpetologists, all snake scale patterns will look similar.
I can't identify specific species, but it is very easy to know if the snake is poisonous or not-- and it only takes one look at the head of his snake to know it was not poisonous.
The vast majority of snakes that will be encountered in the US are harmless and are actually beneficial-- that snake was probably keeping the rat population down where rp lives.

Thats a Diamondback water snake...often mistook for the water moccasin/cottonmouth. They have a nasty bite and a musky discharge if bothered.

Pretty much every snake species will run away from both a dog and a human, and anything else that they don't eat-- they will only bite when provoked or cornered. An aggressive snake just means it will bite sooner when provoked-- snakes don't go seeking out dogs or humans to bite.
Here's a lovely story.
We had a dog-
 (trampis with said dog)
She got bit when she was 5 months old. By a diamondback. In the face above the eye.

This is her after she got better. With her new friend. (dog we have now.)

Before another snake bit her. And now, we only have this dog.

Which is the dog that was barking at the snake. Which is why he shot the snake because he didn't know what kind it was and that's just how it goes now. Shoot first and identify later. Because we don't know what every snake looks like. And don't want to get right up on it's face to see if it has a pit organ or not.
Also, I think this might have been a Texas Indigo snake. And that we decided it'd be a good idea to just shoot it. Because they eat rattlesnakes.

I'm going to have to take a closer look at what we think is a water moccasin around here. These do look very alike

Hey, I'm sorry the your dog-- I have one myself and wouldn't want that to happen-- but that is not the normal.
A rattlesnake is the most common poisonous snake in the US and is also probably the easiest snake in the world to identify-- just listen for that rattle.
But snakes are shy creatures, even the poisonous ones. It didn't plan to eat your dog, biting it only caused the snake stress and temporary loss of venom. Unfortunately, it was probably your puppies curiosity that was the cause.
Most snakes are beneficial to have around though-- they keep the rodent population down.

Which kinda sums of my point in saying shoot first identify later is not necessary-- if you have enough time to shoot the snake, you have enough time to get your dogs and yourself away until the snake moves away on its own.

This was in TX. I agree, there are many benefits to having snakes around, even venomous ones (they kill skunks, rats, and other vermin). I myself can really only positively pick out a rattlesnake, cottonmouth, and copperhead.

You could have called animal control. They'll relocate the snake for free.
I do understand where you're coming from though. There's always next time.

You really thought that thing was a Cottonmouth?

That is a cottonmouth.
You killed a harmless Nerodia species. And for no reason other than irrational fear. If you hadn't beaten him to death with a stick, you probably could have just walked up to him and nudged him along, and I guarantee you he would have fled like a little bitch snake. It's not like the snake was out to get you or anything.
These animals are pretty easy to identify from a distance. There's no reason you couldn't learn how to tell the obvious differences between Viperidae species and Colubridae species. And then leave them alone.

I live out in the middle of nowhere. Guns are animal control here..
But seriously, yeah... snakes are just another kind of being.

I did walk up to him, with a shotgun.
The head flew a few yards away from the body.

This is also a cottonmouth, so you can see how they're easily confused.

They've been to our house twice. Once for an alligator, the other time was for a snake. They have 100% response rate for me. Why wouldn't they respond?

the closest animal control is like an hour away. I doubt they'd take us seriously if we called them.
"You mean you want us to drive an hour to get a snake out of your yard??? "
and then they'd probably laugh. This is Texas. I don't know of ANYONE who calls animal control for snakes.
Most people's animal (snake) control either involves a shotgun or a hoe.
