I just feel like the hipster label is too all-encompassing. Allot more people like "hipster" music (which is any non mainstream music really) then dress like hipsters. That's why it helps to distinguish.

I know, that's why hipsterness is such an annoyance. Am I more hipster if I listen to popular hipster bands? (Phoenix), classic hipster bands? (Modest Mouse), hippie hipster bands? (The Flaming Lips), Complete Unknown bands? Crazy experimental music? Music from another decade? Music from another century?!
I try not to worry about this stuff, but you can always get called a hipster for your music.
Another hipster thing to do is to pretend like your less hipster then everyone else, and everyone thinks that your always falling under that category if your not blatantly a hipster.
It just hurts my head to think about and it is utterly stupid.
