So a few months ago I applied for and interviewed for a position as a research assistant (taking readings, placing stuff, etc, trained monkey kinda work) in Antarctica. I didn't think anything of it and was really only applying cause I was unemployed at the time and applying everywhere.
So I get an email from the leader of the research team a few minutes ago. He wants me to accompany them on a 3 month trip to Antarctica in the fall.
I would love to go to Antarctica but:
It would require me to take a semester off from school. Which pushes my grad. back from Dec '10 to May '11 which means I would either need to sign some kind of lease extension or find a new place to stay for 6 months, because I plan on moving out to CO to continue my education and don't want to sign a 1 year lease fully intending on breaking it. It would also require me resigning or taking a leave of absence from my current job. Which is another issue with CO because I just planned on transferring to a CO store when I move, but it requires 1 year of employment, which I won't have if I go.
on the other hand though: It would look DAMN GOOD on my resume and when applying for post-grad. It's also 3 months in Antarctica, I mean, who can say they've done that!!! It would also help me to save money because they provide everything (food, clothing, equipment, shelter, etc) so the only things I would be paying would be my rent at my apt. back home and minimal utility bills.

I would do whatever it takes to get an opportunity to just visit Antartica. It's up there with Bhutan and rafting down to Timbuktu.
If you don't plan on researching there after graduate school, then my suggestion is to do it, it seems like once-in-a-lifetime. I *wish* I could do something like that for 3 months in Antarctica!

Are you kidding me? Fucking take it for christ's sake! Its not exactly common for people to get the opportunity to go to fucking antarctica. And you're main concern is your damn lease and graduating a semester later?
Think of it this way. It's going to be alot easier to find a decent job, and alot easier to find a place for 6 months, than it will be to get this opportunity again. Just quit worryin about shit and just do it. You're going to regret it if you don't.

Yeah, thats an opportunity that seems to outweigh any of your other current options.
You also dont have to sign a year lease. Look on Craigslist for people who will take a 6month roomate, you can find somewhere to live.
You will regret the decisions you dont make far more than the ones you do. This is a quote I used to hate, but as life has gone on, I've only found it to be more and more true.

My friend emailed me info on the job, he knew one of the guys that did this before. It is a support staff position. I mean I'm a research assistant but thats just a glorified term for team bitch.

Take the position man. I would (seriously) come visit you. One of my primary life goals is to stand on every continent. Antartica is going to be the hardest one to pull off - lol.

lol... am i the only one that would want to stay as far away from antarctica as possible? (well i guess technically that would be the north pole... so maybe halfway as far as possible  )
