Camera in Comcast cable box?
    #12279122 - 03/26/10 09:44 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

I noticed something that looks like a micro camera in my Comcast cable box.  I guess it could be the receiver for the controller.

For those that have a Comcast cable box...it's on the far left side of the 'screen part'.  Round and black like the micro cameras.

When I block it and use the controller, the controller works.  I haven't taken the box apart because it would take more effort(reverse starwrench?) than my usual household electronic.

I know I'm being a little paranoid, but I'd really like to know.

What do you think?

It could be. I have no doubts the government would go this far to invade our privacy.

If the remote still works then just cover it. Paranoia gone. (Except for the microphone!)  :tinfoil:

I really don't think anyone would notice. Tampering with your cable box voids your service warranty, or something similar to that in many instances.

Comcast Cameras to Start Watching You?
If you have some tinfoil handy, now might be a good time to fashion a hat. At the Digital Living Room conference today, Gerard Kunkel, Comcast’s senior VP of user experience, told me the cable company is experimenting with different camera technologies built into devices so it can know who’s in your living room.

The idea being that if you turn on your cable box, it recognizes you and pulls up shows already in your profile or makes recommendations. If parents are watching TV with their children, for example, parental controls could appear to block certain content from appearing on the screen. Kunkel also said this type of monitoring is the “holy grail” because it could help serve up specifically tailored ads. Yikes.

Kunkel said the system wouldn’t be based on facial recognition, so there wouldn’t be a picture of you on file (we hope). Instead, it would distinguish between different members of your household by recognizing body forms. He stressed that the system is still in the experimental phase, that there hasn’t been consumer testing, and that any rollout “must add value” to the viewing experience beyond serving ads.

Perhaps I’ve seen Enemy of the State too many times, or perhaps I’m just naive about the depths to which Comcast currently tracks my every move. I can’t trust Comcast with BitTorrent, so why should I trust them with my must-be-kept-secret, DVR-clogging addiction to Keeping Up with the Kardashians?

Kunkel also spoke on camera with me about fixing bad Comcast user experiences, the ongoing BitTorrent battle and VOD. But he mostly towed the corporate line on these issues (the monitoring your living room came up after my camera was put away).

To gather information for this article, the blogger picked up on a conversation between Gerard Kunkel and another person at a recent conference. They were discussing the various input devices offered by a variety of vendors that Comcast is reviewing.

The camera-based gesture recognition device is in no way designed to - or capable of - monitoring your living room. These technologies are designed to allow simple navigation on a television set just as the Wii remote uses a camera to manage its much heralded gesture-based interactivity.

We are constantly exploring new technologies that better serve our customers. The goal is simple - a better user experience that allows the consumer to get ever increasing value out of their Comcast products.

As with any new technology, we carefully consider the consumer benefits. In fact, we do an enormous amount of consumer testing in advance of making a product decision such as this. We're confident that a new technology like gesture-based navigation will be fully explored with consumers to understand the product's feature benefits - and of course, the value to the consumer.

I saw this story where public schools in Europe were using the webcams on the laptops that kids were allowed to bring home to spy on them at their homes. They were taking the footage to give these kids detention for misbehaving...... at home......

I'll try to find the article for you guys.

He got in trouble for smoking pot but the cameras were only supposed to be used for security (if the laptop was stolen they could turn them on).

I can't remember if he reported it stolen so he could keep it and that's why they turned it on or if they were just being assholes.

If Comcast installed cameras in your cable box, the Party Van would have kicked my door down long ago.
Back when I used to sell Oxycontin, they would regularly be stored right in front of/on top of my cable box when someone would come to pick some up.

If they aren't tracking us to see illegal activity, catch us in embarrassing situations, or anything like that, then why the hell ARE they tracking us?
Risking their whole customer base to do some research study?

You should consider laying off the drugs for a while.

Take it apart and find the fuckout. Unless you're some kind of sheeple. You got two screwdrivers? A flat for pryin and a phillips for screwin?

But seriously, if you're that worried about it, put tape over it.

I take it you didn't read the articles that confirmed they do?
Comcast isn't the government, what do they care if you sell drugs?
