Tape is not needed
You NEED wide mouth jars
Always get the dry verm off and the pressure from the tap will not harm the cake

Well, I guess I'm screwed then as I already spent all the cash I have on this project and these are all I have: http://www.amazon.com/Jarden-60000-Ball-2-Pint-Mason/dp/B000SMWWEM/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_cart_4
Are you saying I shouldn't even bother trying with these?

Shucks
I suppose I owe you a very big thank you! Finding this out now is much better than finding it out post-colonization I'm sure . Guess I'll have to locate some more cash

I just ordered 24 wide mouth 1/2 pint jars. I went to walmart and they didn't have any canning jars on the shelves yet (I live in the middle of nowhere, only place in the vicinity to shop for them). So I'll be waiting at least a week for them to arrive. I don't want these jars to go to waste though, and I don't want to wait a week until I start either. So if I break the jars open and put them on trays, what other differences are compared to growing cakes? Is it significantly different? I searched for teks for using trays but didn't find any
I want to start sterilizing and colonizing tomorrow (with the regular mouth jars), so any tips/links for trays are greatly appreciated.

Can I still use the PF Tek with wild bird seed? What am I replacing, the BRF?

Well with it being my first grow (and subsequently reading solely on PF Tek method since that's what I decided I was doing), PF Tek is really my only option right now if I'm going to start tomorrow. I have no problem smashing the jars, if they are going to be a hassle I'll never use them anyways (and I just ordered wide mouth jars), so I may as well get some use out of them.
So basically what I'm asking is this: Is there a way to do the PF Tek method & BRF with trays? If so, is there a tek out there for it or can you walk me through the changes compared to the normal PF Tek method?
or is my impatient ass just gonna have to wait a week for wide mouth jars

Yeah i would use them to make casings. Personally I'm more of a rye person than WBS.
I would either make some casing or wait for your wide-mouths.

id wait
think of it say you do smash these ball jars you have then when your ready to move to WBS and you need ball mouth jars you will have to buy them all over again
sometimes we have to wait everything happens for a reason
so you can either waste money or wait 7 days either way your not going to see a mushroom for at least a month if everything goes smooth

Well the main reason I'm so impatient to start growing is there is a festival in my area at the very end of May, and I'm hoping to have some nice cubes to eat during it. Sort of a tight timeframe, so I want to get started as soon as possible.

Yeah that is a pretty tight time frame. Don't count on it though because there is always the chance of being unsuccessful.

Okay so say I decide to use the regular mouth jars and then just make casings out of them on trays. Can I just use a regular aluminum baking tray? Also, for the casing layer can I just use verm?

You can use aluminum baking trays. I recommend using plastic or glass though because mycelium has tendency to chemically break down aluminum and slowly eat right through it. So if you go aluminum thicker is better. People use aluminum all the time.
Yes you can use just verm as a casing layer. Doesn't do as good a job as verm/peat+hydrated lime in my own experience. But it definitely beats no casing layer at all.

Thanks for the responses Khaos I really appreciate it. Would you recommend I do a verm layer on the top and bottom of the tray, or just the top?

No problem.
There is no need for a casing layer on the bottom. Just the top after the substrate is fully colonized.
If you've never had a successful grow i would recommended doing a few PF jars to get the "feel" for things before diving into casing and such. But hey sometimes diving in works out. What ever you feel best suits you. If you feel confident you can tackle it go for it.

Well I think I'm going to try pans and jars at the same time to get some use out of my regular mouth jars. Since I've got 2 different syringes I may as well. This will be my first grow so I hope at least one of them works
The reason I asked about the bottom layer is I'm reading to do so in some of the tek's on the main casing page of shroomery. It seems that some of them are several years old though, so I'm not exactly sure what to take as fact (and some of it is conflicting anyways).
I think I have the PF Tek jar thing down as I've read extensively on it, but any tips you have for casing/tray method for a first timer will help me big time as I'm not really feeling comfortable with my ability to not fuck it up even after reading these teks
