 Melbourne 2010 Shit Talking Thread

greetings fellow shroomers. im new around these parts and would like to introduce myself, so hey hows it going my name is flynn.
now i know what your thinking 'oh man not another one of those damn noobs' 'what he didnt post any pics....' 'he started it that early?!?!'
but i assure you, i am not a noob and have diligently spent alot of time digesting not only the 2009 thread in its entirety, but also the 2008, 2007 and 2006 thread among other things.
so much so to the point that i feel condfident enough now to get out there in a month or two and start hunting those wood and pine loving little buggers.
as i see it - and please correct me if im wrong - im in the hunt for smallish brown/golden top'd mushrooms, with white stems, lightish grey colored gills, with no annulus, that bruise blue when cut or damaged and have a purpley/darkish colored spore print.
the two main mushrooms to avoid are the stropharia that has a more of an orangey/reddish top, and im informed that it causes projectile vomiting and pissing from the anus. yum... and more importantly the deceptively similar looking gallerina, which causes liver failure and possible death if ingested, my current understanding is that it looks almost exact or very close to that of the subaeruginosa, but it has a BROWN STEM, does not bruise blue and has a chocolately brown spore print.
i have compiled a quite comprehensive list of possible spots and locations that have a suitable habitat for subs which i will not repeat here. its funny but i cant help it now when driving or on public transport from scanning around the surrounds for manmade woodchip beds as well as areas naturally filled with decaying wood matter and taking note of them once found.
ive also got a project in the planning once i get my hands on some fresh sub mycelium or spores to create a single hidden super patch even possibly multiple, in different locations, cos in the worlds of dave chappelle "you gotta diversify your bonds nigga" ... haha.
so there ive talked a heap of shit and hope i havent rattled on for too long.
by the way did anyone else witness the flooding in the city and the hailstorms over the weekend? that shit was fucked up hey?

Jesus, what took you so long? I noticed mushrooms for the first time and started hunting in 2006.... You learn a lot faster if you just dive in.

It is Galerina, and it does not look very similar at all, if you know much about mushrooms. Tubaria are more common, and often misidentified as Galerina. Both genera have rusty brown, not chocolate brown spore prints.

Best of luck to ya ths season! Melbourne is one of the best places in the world for finding Psychedelic mushrooms! 
2009 was my first year for hunting and i'm hooked. The satisfaction when you find your first sub will be a special moment and from there, you'll find it easy to identify Psilocybe Subaureginosa!
I'm more into hunting them than consuming them..albeit i do enjoy it every now and then.
Anywho shall cya around in the Melb season thread once it begins

haha, no sorry i might have delivered the wrong message there, i became interested in mushies during the summer of 09 when it was offseason, and during that time i digested all of the melbourne threads and other various sources so i could learn about what to go for and what not to.

nice to meet you also zemullan. i am also eager to get out there and start hunting and find my first subs. i think ill find them no worries i know pretty much what im looking for and where to find it, and even have a database built up of possible spots
but a question for anyone from melb, im having a bit of trouble locating some pine plantations. ive heard there are some out at woodend but am not sure. i also heard there is pine plantations out towards daylseford and marysville?

To tell ya the truth, you are much better off looking in woodchip garden beds. They are everywhere around the suburbs and you'll find a LOT more than you will find in pine plantations.
In my experience, i tend to find subs mainly grow in singularities in pine plantations rather than big clusters in the woodchips. Not to say you won't find clusters in pine area's..it's just much easier hunting in the garden beds

Interesting bit of advice..You'd want to be looking at woodchips surrounding pine/eucalyptus trees, right? What are the odds of finding them without these trees around?

In natural environments they will tend to grow around the bases of large trees where you see decaying wood material (and into the surrounding grass). Basically you are looking for areas of the ground where there is plenty of decaying wood present.
The woodchips i am referring to are from man made garden beds. Garden beds are where i find 90% of my finds.

Spot on, however some woodchip beds consist of eucalypt bark/pine and may not necessarily need trees nearby. However in 99% of my findings there have been eucaplypt and/or pine trees nearby.

Some of the garden beds I get shrooms from have no trees near them. But most do.

interesting, i thought places where there are woodchip beds, but no trees, like a roundabout or palyground for example are also good places to look for subs.

A bit of shade also helps to keep the moisture, e.g foliage, grass and bushes

Hi Guys! first post in this forum, but some of you may recognise me from elsewhere.
started my own patch last season so hoping it fruits in the next 4-6 weeks ( maybe being a bit hasty )
coming into my 3rd season and hoping for a goodin! i reckon this will be the best of the 3 ive seen so far. fingers crossed!
had the dream a couple nights ago and hit the forums and was shocked to hear reports of finds already! might head out to the peninsula in 3-4 weeks if weather is looking good.
until then i twiddle my thumbs and stalk Shroomery!!!

i also read up alot on growing subs and it seems they are notoriously difficult to fruit indoors, and ontop of that their are numerous hurdles such as infection etc which really make it a difficult process with alot of trial and error involved.
my plans personally are during this season or towards the end to save up all my spores and possibly snare some mycelium and either spawn it to a box of woodchips or to a hessian bag and then go about creating a super patch somewhere that would be suitable for it to grow.
it seems with subs mother nature best looks after them and makes them fruit but the problem is that it may take two seasons for you to start seeing real fruits from it.... but hey screw it atleast it means there will be more mushies out there

I totally agree with that, i don't live in Melbourn but hear on here about all the finds, i get a little jealous i don't find that many. Oh well, i started last year and late in the season so hopefully i do a little better this year. I seem to be thinking along the same lines of you DosileFlynn, except i've already colected everything nd prepared my subs garden lol Now i just need the mush lol. Someone correct me if i'm wrong, although it's hard to grow subs indoors, i'm pretty sure cubes are still easy (even in vic)

well i may be a little out of my league here with some of the knowledge that the other longterm members have, but its my understanding that cubes are easily grown indoors and there is many many books and pieces of literature for growing them, im fairly sure lots of people have had success growing cubes indoors.

thats pretty impressive for this early, as for an overall haul, i think i beat it this season :P
me and two friends went and sited 1/6th of my bodyweight last season wet in 3-4 hours.
and no im not a dwarf/mal-nurished.
weather is feeling very fungal! just need some cold nights and dewwy mornings :P

I am in the ACT (which is for all intents and purposes, NSW) and i have a good spot lined up about an hours drive from here - this will be my first hunt, and even though there has been no rain, the person who told me about it is confident i will get bags full. Heres hoping!
How about my Melbourne friends? Getting much rain? What are your temps like? And sorry for crashing your exclusive club, just couldn't help myself with all this talk of subs. I Have spent a lot of time trawling through images of them, (especially msanchez420 and undergrounder's pics) and i gotta say i am at the point where i care more about finding the suckers than i do about eating them!

average min temp is still around 15 degrees celcius where i am ( dew point being slightly lower ) looks like it'll warm up this coming weekend also, still atleast 2-3 weeks before things get into proper motion, bar those who fancy the mountains, quite possibly subs in the alpine regions already, but couldnt be certain.
im not even going to bother till next full moon, which is roughly a month away

Hey peeps! been digesting, and reading, and researching, and even informing my girlfriend what to pick and whats most likely gonna kill ya! I'm a seasoned hunter that used to pick thousands of Psilocybe semilanceata (liberty cap) back in the good 'ol year of 1999 in England Devon in my own top secret spot! where i had to buy books on Mycology and goto the library to get the information i need! but now im travelling around the world 1 country at a time with just 1 thing on my mind! shrooms! ive sampled shrooms from Uk, Thailand, Indonesia and hoping if it ever bloody starts to rain i can mark Australia on that list too!
Got 4 different types in mind!
Cubensis, Subs. Cyans and ofc my babies Libs! I'm not limited to district, region or area as im travelling constantly on the go with my eye on the ground in the hope to find me my very first sub! or something else!
Amanita muscaria do not interest me seen a friend try those with disasterous results!
Currently sitting in a camping site just south of the Adelaide Hills... over the next 4 months will be travelling and searching SA, NSW, VIC and ofc Queensland! any advice and tips would be awesome!
I'm pretty sure i know what im doing! and im not in any rush to find them! i know research, patience and ofc rain is the key!
I hear Melbournes starting to pin and its just a stones throw from here (in terms that just took me across the Nullarbor! haha)
What an awesome web page this is came across this a few years ago but this is my first ever post!

That kind of attitude will get you no where. Especially where psychedelics are concerned. I know for a fact byron bay , australias most easterly point in northern nsw provides for some awesome hunting both in summer, and winter.

thanks man will do! .... my attitude is to go where the mushies are ... but other things dicatate where i have to go... if it was up to me id be here till it was over .. but im english on a working holiday visa and my time in australia is very limited ... plus now have been literally given a house to babysit in brisbane .... free rent .. just have to look after the cat so this is whats dictating my route ... kinda sux doesnt it as id love to be here till i had at least a kg of subs in my backpack

I was in Coff's Harbour & Grafton may last year. Heaps of goldies. not to Far from Brissie, Maybe a 4.5 hour Drive along the pacific hwy, Leave heaps of Dry cat food and a couple of Cans in a bowl, Drive to Grafton sleep in the car, get an early start hunting and head back to Brissie around 3pm back in Brissie for 7:30
and you prolly don't even have to go all the way, I'm sure they're not isolated to Grafton & Coffs Harbor

Long time lurker and hunter, first time poster!
Looks like S.E Melbourne might be in for some nice rain over the week, we already had a few good storms in the last couple of days! Though the day temps are still hitting around 24-25, the nights are getting cold and mornings foggy. The ground in my local patches is still too dry underneath the surface to have really got the mycelium wet, though hopefully this morning fog really gets it going. I thought I'd make my first post here, rather than clog up the melb 10 season thread!

I know that they are using woodchips in park area's around here but i've just moved to bendigo from Western Australia and i'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

holy crap that was fucked up, just got back from the search with a few samples. Almost got eaten alive by a bunch of homeless people!!! I was walking in the wet areaand stumbled upon a little patch of mushies that i dont know what are yet, i picked a few then walked over a little hill and to my suprise there was a bunch of raggety homeless people sitting around in chairs with a fire and sticks and shit and they chased me, they were prettt fuckn out of it. I reckon they have found an area and are chowin down on shrooms.. bastards...

i was walking in a certain AWESOME nature park and came across a patch of shrooms that are cone shaped with semi-golden/white tops and grow in patches of 6 or more. there was too many people around at the time so i'm going to nab some a bit later. they kind of looked like button mushrooms.

Yeah I shamelessly hunt and pick any mushroom I find (magic or not) in front of crowds if need be. Although thats not entirely accurate, I prefer not to pick a mushroom just for examination, I like to let them be and instead take a snapshot.

I am making a quiet drying chamber out of a computer fan, shoebox and an old phone charger for the power supply.
The air is going to get sucked in underneath and blown out the top.
I'm stressing on if I can make it quiet, the fan is quiet but when I fix it into the shoebox the frame hits the cardboard and shakes making some noise, I will try and make a flexible connection using duct tape and hopefuly it'll fix the problem.

The cactus on the left is a San Pedro Backeberg clone, named after Curt Backeberg who brought it into cultivation. The one in the centre is a beautiful San Pedro but seems to have a long central spine. They are all considered Trichocereus pachanoi and are legit for consumption. If your friend is keen to sell a cutting of the one in the middle send me a PM, it is very pretty.

Ofc the Wwoof host gave me about 3ft's worth also planted a nice new cutting for him its now sliced up into blocks and drying with some damp-rid with shrooms sitting on top of the San Pedro Chunks!! the guy who gave me the cactus is the guy who helped me find my first ever Ozzy Subs! 9 in total!

I've heard two different things regarding Drying Mushrooms, 1st was spread them out on a cookie tray not touching each other in front of a fan until they are cracker crisp, the second was it didn't matter if they were touching each other as long as air can circulate around them, like in a mesh bag in front of a fan.
are both correct and if so which is the most preferred?

You know the saying there's a few ways to skin a cat? The same thing applies to mushrooms, each person uses their preferred method to achieve the same results. Experiment and find the one that you like best.

The more air circulation the better. The mesh bag might work, but i can't imagine that it would be very good. I think spreading them on a rack would be the most efficient.

I just took a bucket, put feet on it, cut a hole in the bottom to accommodate a Fan from a computer power supply, attached it to the bottom and with hooks all around the inside of the bucket, i made 5 tears of mesh, each containing about 3-4 grams of fresh shrooms.
the air flows in from the bottom (cos I reckon the air is cooler) through the mesh tears holding the shrooms and out the top, (this worked out better than I thought). and just for added drying, I added a few packets of drying agent I had gotten from a mate who works at a shoe store

This worked for me, I simply put them in a large box, spread out evenly, but tip the box on the side and face it towards the fan. Turn the fan on, at the start mushrooms are full of water (95% is water) then after a day they dry out and become light as a feather so the box catches them from flying away. Also fans are cheap to run.
After they are dry, I use a Damprid chamber for 2-3 days to make them cracker dry.
The whole drying process starting with a fan and finishing with Damprid takes around 4-5 days.
Then store them in a plastic Glad ziplock bag with decadent.

Random question that, yes, could be in the ethnobotanical garden, but...
have any Melbourneans come across
Feijoas/Pineapple Guavas
on their hunting trips, or are growing them? I want to grow some myself, happy to trade/buy seeds/fruit.

hey guys, do any of you guys know if its alrigh to pick and consume old looking weathered mushrooms that have like sort of dried out caps with splits and like a bit of blackening on them??? recently i struck gold and left alot of them behind that i wasnt sure were safe to take.
also if they are going to rot should i pick them and like break up the caps and distribute them around the park to spread the spores and stuff for other seasons?? beacuse ive heard if you get aborts on the patch that particular area of hte patch wont fruit for a while during the season.
any help is greatly appreciated.

alright cool i just wnated to make sure, because some of them were turning black, but i later realised it was because they were growing in clumps and they had dropped the spores onto the mushies around them, which gave them the appearance of being rotten and stuff!

Hi All,
Friday night came and went, ate two of my Choc covered Mushies plus one medium sized half Dried Sub... i got to the point of Visuals but it only lasted what I think was about 30 minutes, I noticed while I was eating my chocolate mushroom cubes that one of them was more chocolate than Mushroom it must have been from the last mold I filled as that one was only about 1 gram (I meant to mark that one for my wife's 1st Trip but couldn't remember which one it was.... Oooops!)
So I had a pleasant Trip either way, my Ipod has 4 gig of Music for my Trippin Play list which is a mix of 60's & 70's Psychedelic music, some Rock and Progressive metal i.e. Epica mixed with some sound bytes from Alice in wonderland, Blood Rayne II the Video Game and Monty Python set on shuffle...
went for a stroll around the neighborhood ended up in a park with lots of trees and dark and got really nervous I might get rolled so I boogied (Literally lol) home
I started at 7Pm and was ready for bed at 11:30, I think cos I didn't go to bed Thursday night until 2am and was up for work at 5am my body & Mind were to tired to continue.
Also, I've heard people say that you should have an Empty Stomach so I did that last night and to be honest, I find after an hour after eating I have a much better Trip
Last weekend's Trip was intense My best in 20 years and 2 hours before I took my Choc-Shrooms I was eating really Spicy Thai Food
anyone know if Hot and Spicy food accelerated a Trip?

Hey guys first post here.
I lurked on shroomery last year and learnt a bit but unfortunately was in an area which isn't exactly ideal for shrooms. I have relocated to Melbourne recently and i pnterested in going hunting. Would this time of the year be considered too late? I'm living in the inner southern suburbs, but I see a lot of people have luck in the SE suburbs, am I likely to get some finds in my area too? And would I be mainly looking for subs? This seems like the most common variety posted on these boards.

thats what I do, I take all the old caps and break them up and spread the love, Also, when I get home with my harvest, I check each and every one a second time to make sure I didn't accidentally pick something else and any caps missing stems that I can not identify go in the bin, no mucking around for me., II'm a responsible Trippa haha

I tried to go on a little hunt today but it started pissing down and I had to retreat home. I did find about 10-12 specimens before heading home. I found them in a man made garden near a cricket ground not far from my place. At first I thoght that looked like p.subs so I snatched them up and took them home. I tried to pinch some of the stems but bluing only showed up on a few of them. My question is, is the blue meant to be really vibrant? Because this seemed to be a blackish blue and only on a few of the mushies. I am intending on making an ID request thread with pics and a spore print but unfortunately I only have the net on my iPhone at the moment. I tried to put the pics on my iPhone that I took with my digicam but the uploader wouldn't give me the option on my iPhone. So I'm waiting until I can use a friends Internet stick to upload the pics. Do spore prints generally take 24 hours? And if someone could answer my question ahoy the bluing that'd be awesome. Thanks in advance
