A short letter to West coast breweries:
    #12151876 - 03/06/10 02:59 AM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Dead Head Brewer of any typical West Coast Brewery,

Many countries and regions of the world have their own distinct styles and flavors.  Belgium, Germany, Ireland, England, to name just a few.  The beers may be distinctly different, yet still have a certain flavor that ties them together that lets the drinker know and experience the origin of the brew.

Now, the United States, and especially the West Coast of the country is a relative newcomer to the brewing scene.  But they've come on strong and fast.  They're bold and brash.  Acknowledging tradition, while at the same time feeling free to experiment in the land of hops, grain, and yeast (among other countless strange ingredients that make an occasional appearance.)  There are countless micros around, and others that started as micros such as Redhook, Pyramid, Sierra Nevada, etc.  The country has come to know and love these beers.

But with this comes a desire to define themselves.  They ask, "What is OUR signature flavor?"

So far the only defining signature has been hopping the hell out of everything they create with some kind of citrus flavored hops (usually Cascade or some hybrid thereof.)  It's a signature, sure.  But is it the one that you really want to define yourselves by?  "To hell with malt."  "To hell with yeasty characteristics."  "To hell with subtlety."

Hefeweitzen NOW WITH BIG BOLD OVERPOWERING ORANGE FLAVORED HOPS
English Ale, NOW WITH BIG BOLD OVERPOWERING ORANGE FLAVORED HOPS
Porter, NOW WITH BIG BOLD OVERPOWERING ORANGE FLAVORED HOPS

It's like those guys with the little trucks that can blare their distorted speakers at 140dbs.  Sure, it's loud as hell, but does it sound good?  Personally I like loud music, but when you can hear the rattle of your license plate frame clearer than the musicians fingers rubbing on the low strings in between notes, then there's something wrong with the picture.

There have been some amazing beers produced on the West Coast.  But please reconsider exactly what you're trying to accomplish the next time you decide to tripple hop your Kolsh.

Sincerely,
A concerned beer drinker.

P.S.  This was written tongue and cheek.  But you can probably still guess that I'm not a fan of big citrus hop flavor

We're a ruthless people out here in California.  Go enjoy England, discuss the proper pinky finger position when sippin tea with the general London populace while drinking your lager.  Out here we like our beer strong, flavorful with no bullshit.  And there are numerous non hoppy beers, in fact Im drinking a west coast non hoppy beer right now by Alesmith (yea its 11 AM you wanna fight about it?)

And frankly I find Belgian ales to be sickenly sweet most of the time, they are complex but come on Belgians learn to balance flavors.  It's like making some intense cream dish, but then not adding any acid to the mix, just overpowering cream flavor.  In fact when I was in Brussels at a beer festval I got into an argument with a brewer about this same issue, I believe I referred to them as pussies by the end as I was hammered.  Got to keep the reputation of US citizens as drunken slobs as accurate as possible

That's exactly my point though.  You think the Belgians are way too sweet (an opinion I share), and I think the West Coast brews (on average, we all know we can cherry pick) are too bold on the hops.

Nice thing though, there's enough beer styles out there for everyone

Well I think that in general when people think of West Coast beers they are really only looking at beers from a few cities.  The most famous would be San Diego and Portland.  San Diego is the beer capital of the US and they generally like hoppy beers.  However there are many breweries that dont share that philosophy in SD.  I dont know where you live so maybe they only ship Stone out there?  It just depends on your familiarity with the West Coast scene

Funny, I like the over-hopped west coasters as well as the overly sweet Belgians! :crazy2:

I guess I'm just one bold motherfucker!

In fact, we do have beers out here that aren't super hopped... though I'll admit the high hops have become signature.

A few of my favorites that I really enjoy are (in no particular order):
  • Deschutes Bachelor ESB
  • Firestone Walker Double Barrel
  • Gordon Biersch Blonde Bock
  • North Coast's Old Stock
  • New Belgium's 2 Below (not exact west coast, but surely west!)

Well you needn't be concerned.  It IS possible to make a great IPA without overdoing citrus and while balancing all the West Coast Of America (WCOA) Hops.  Add some Willamette and Mt. Hood and Simcoe and Amarillo along with some Cascade.  They are So Hoppy Together...

half the problem is that people like you overgeneralize beer from a region.

who the fuck are you to tell anyone to reconsider exactly what they are trying to accomplish?  you don't know what they are trying to accomplish.

plenty of people must enjoy it if so many breweries are doing it(using plenty of citrusy hops).

so you don't enjoy citrusy hops.  whoopie-do-da-day.

go cry into a non-citrusy hopped beer and be happy already FFS.

More hops= more alcohol = a better beer.

For the record, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is perhaps the most perfectly balanced beer ever.

When I want to take it to the next level I buy some Pike Kilt Lifter or Bridgeport IPA.

When I want to drink 7 beers and not be drunk I buy Budweiser.

This thread is the LOLz.

First comes the "concerned beer drinker"
who thinks every West Coast produced beer is
a citrus hopmonster.
Then comes the "uber-expert" who thinks all
Belgian beers are sweet as fuck, and try to
teach (the pussy) belgians how to balance their beers.
And finally we got the "enthusiast" who states that More hops= more alcohol = a better beer,
but generally buys Budweiser
if he wants to drink 7 or more beers.

This thread is the LOLz.

I was wondering when you were going to chime in Stonesun

The more hops thing reminds me of my buddy... One day I was lautering the mash and I let my friend take a taste of the runoff.  He got this peirced look on his face and started telling me it was "WAY TO HOPPY!"

:hi:

BTW, I never said I generally buy Budweiser.  You just made that up.  And I certainly never said I generally bought Budweiser if I wanted to drink 7 or more beers.  You have a reading comprehension issue.

Odds that I started homebrewing years before you too?

For the record I never said hops increases the alcohol content of the beer.  But yeah I guess I implied that, which is wrong.  I should have just said hoppy beers tend to be above average (5%) in alcohol.
