battery is fully charged, when i switch the ignition it clicks once. So its not the battery, alternator. Is the only thing left the starter?
It worked fine this morning. . soon as i started fixing shit on this car everything else started to break. its like a bad relationship, at least one thing always has to be wrong with it.

the tap the starter advice sometimes works if the bendix is stuck, more often than not it's the solenoid, using a screwdriver to bypass it works
it will throw sparks and scare you the first few times, make sure you're clear of any moving parts and the key is turned to the run position

I had this problem with my 1998 Chevy Blazer.....it had all sorts of weird electrical problems, and the "Clicking when key is turned" was one of them.
This is what I did to fix it:
Tools
channel lock or adjustable Wrench wire brush
Steps
1) I lifted the hood up, and unscrewed one of the posts on the Battery (doesn't matter which one, but I prefer the "Positive", or Red side)
2) Take the connector it completely off the battery post.
3) Carefully slide the connector back on the post, and screw it back on tightly (but don't over-tighten).
4) Try turning it over with your keys.
5) If it doesn't turn over, try it again.
6) If it STILL doesn't work, after many resets, try my next idea....
Another problem could be low amperage...if it says 12 volts (with a digital voltage meter, if you have one), that doesn't always mean its fully charged (but volts and amps are correlated, but not linearly). It could say 12 volts but not have enough amps to turn the engine. Its happened to me with faulty batteries.
Lastly, this specific thing happened to my Blazer very recently, but the engine turned over (no clicking). Turns out it was the Distrubutor cap.

Aint that the fucking truth. I'm not even sure if my car has a solenoid or a bendix spring. You can't even get your fucking hands in there anymore what with all the fucking weird shit they got going on.
Ah the good old days when you could make a temporary repair with a matchbook or a paper clip.
I know, I hate cars these days: too much electronics.....
And its so damn crowded in there! I can't even take out my spark plugs without having to go thru the wheel well with a double universial-joint adapater on a socket wrench. Talk about user-unfriendly: its almost like they *want* us to use mechanics only. I say bullshit!
My crowded chevy engine makes me wish I had my Nissan 240 Z Datson running....it may not have a lot of room inside the cab (or is practical for other people), but the room around the engine is unmatched. I can work on almost *any* component under there without having to take something to acess it. A good example is the spark plug: all I need is a socket extension and I'm golden. No universal ball-joint or any of that. SO MUCH easier to fix. And the best part, its mostly mechanical: so if there is an problem, its usually a lot easier to dianose than a bad cuiruit board, fuse or computer chip.
Ironically, My dream car is actually a 1975 Chevy Corvette, but thats because (A) the hood is huge (so theres lots of space to work in) and (B) its a muscle car (my favorite types).

Anyone here ever try replacing the water pump on a 1996 ford Taurus wagon?
Changing a water pump USE TO BE one of the easier repair jobs. I have done it on older model cars in 45 Min's, an hour tops. That's including draining fluids, removing hoses, belts, unbolting the old pump, scraping old gasket material, cleaning both surfaces. installing the new gasket + pump, replacing bolts, hoses and belts, refilling anti-freeze, checking for leaks cleaning up any mess, and time putting tools away.
That Taurus was came apart fine, until the last water pump bolt. It loosened easily but it was so long that the head was pressed against the side of the engine compartment before the threads left the engine block. After fighting, swearing, and puzzling over that Motor F****r for 3+ hours, I broke down and for the first time in my life... I had to buy a manual.
Would you believe that the Ford Motor Co. actually designed the damn thing in a way that requires you to loosen all the motor mounts, a couple more hoses, vac lines, and wires, then lift both the engine and transmission 1.75 inches... All that just to remove the last half inch, of ONE bolt.

replaced the starter. works great. fucking returned the smaller of the two bolts that hold the starter on with my old starter, so its held on by one big fucking bolt.

So the problem was the starter motor was fried? Must sucked pulling that thing off...But at least its fixed.
So, what kinds of things did you have to take off to get to it? Proubly a lot huh? I hope some day car companies go retro and start making "roomy" engine comparments...that would be the day.
actually it wasnt that much. there was a splash guard that had to be removed, held in by two bolts. after that the starter was exposed and quite accessible.
the bolts that held the starter on felt welded to the damn car, but eventually with a lot of force and cursing they came off. easy job overall.
