 Bottom holes in shotgun terrarium

Searched for this and I couldn't come up with anything. This is my first grow(PF Tek) and I've got my cakes in the terrarium with ~95% humidity now, but I did not put holes on the bottom. I've been reading today that holes on the bottom are necessary for proper FAE and I realized that that was probably why I had to cover some holes to maintain proper humidity. Will my cakes be alright sitting outside of the tub for a few minutes while I rectify my hole situation? Really new to cultivation so I don't want to mess up the cakes that already seem to be doing well.

So your putting holes into the bottom of the shotgun chamber? Im asking because I am in the process of getting materials ready for my first grow. And i like knowing these small details  ... how do you get a 99% humidity rate.. do you use a humidifier?

Personally I would leave it. Normally I dont put holes in the bottom of my sgfc havent had issues

I just had an awesome grow in a shotgun that didn't have any holes in the bottom. Honestly I think its better because it retains more water than the perlite can alone and will keep the humidity up for longer if not indefinitely. Sometimes I even splash some water on the perlite to make sure the humidity is close to 100%, and I don't have to worry about spilling because the there are no holes.
My first chamber that had holes in the bottom suffered a lot of humidity loss. So long as you mist your grow 4-5 times per day and waft the lid a couple times after each mist you will be fine as far as FAE goes.

To answer your question, when the air comes up from under the perlite via the bottom holes it brings moisturized air for the life of me I can never remember that scientific name for the process of how all the holes keep the humidity up... It's on the "official SG terrarium tek" which is also in the how to grow mushrooms video.
Long story short, (sciency word here)- more holes more humidity.

I would put maybe half as many holes in the bottom as you have in the other sides.
My friend has suffered from low humidity even in a humid environment due to having hundreds of holes in his SGFC.

Shotgun Terrarium Theory of Operation
The theory of operation for the shotgun mushroom fruiting chamber is that natural air currents travel from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Cool air has the molecules closer together than warm air, thus cool air is at a slightly higher pressure than warm air. When we put several inches of damp perlite in the bottom of our terrarium, we create an area with a slightly cooler temperature than the air above, which is exposed to lights that create heat, and our mushroom substrates, which are often at up to a few degrees warmer than the surrounding air due to THERMOGENESIS (knew there was a sciency word)....Continued on link.

I just stuck my first cakes in my shotgun fruiting chamber.
It's got holes in all six sides with 4" of perlite. However, this setup would only keep a mere 70% humidity, so I covered all the top holes with a towel and it now sits at a perfect 95%. So I would say you did a good thing by not drilling the bottom out.

You called it a shotgun FC- the hole pattern is pretty standard.
You just drilled holes at random intervals? Or did you intend to restrict FAE?

Well I just measured and there's about 3" between holes. But I'm now glad I didn't do 2" between holes because that would have been too many to keep the humidity up. As it is now, I have to cover some holes to achieve greater than 90%.

No, that's backwards. Airflow over the wet perlite creates the humidity.
Open the holes, and drill more.
Edit- also, get it up off the carpet.

I'll try that after these cakes finish and see if it makes a difference. And it's about 6" above the carpet, I just had to move it to get good pictures.

well i would say drill holes in your bottom place a peice of plastic window screen in the bottom (easy to do when you have your perlite out getting it all cleaned out and re-wet) and put it up on some blocks or bricks one in each corner to elevate it so air can flow under and get the RH up.  and 6" off the carpet will have a shit ton of contams the lower 36" of air in the room has 80% of all contams although full colonized cakes are hard as hell to contam it is a good idea the get them above waist level to be safe.

Those also look like larger than 1/4" holes. One should always drill all six sides. Often new growers obsess over the humidity 'reading' a stupid digital hygrometer indicates, losing sight of the fact that fresh air is the number 1 pinning trigger. Raise a shotgun off the table(never put one on the floor) so air can enter from the bottom. This is the major source of humidity AND fresh air.
