GLOUCESTER -- Dylan Hill, the teen whose body was discovered in a cove this weekend, had consumed psychedelic mushrooms and smoked marijuana at his father's house last Saturday before he somehow wandered into Wonson's Cove and drowned, police said today.
City officials said state and Gloucester police have learned that eight Gloucester High School students gathered at the home of Hill's father home on Eastern Point Road in Gloucester last Saturday. At least three students, including Hill, ingested psilocybin mushrooms and also smoked marijuana.
"As a result of those interviews, police are prepared to say that the major contributing factor for the circumstances leading to the victim's death was the ingestion of SCC mushrooms,'' Gloucester police chief Michael Lane said at an afternoon press conference.
"The ingestion of those mushrooms, coupled with the smoking of marijuana afterward, we believe, enhanced the hallucinogenic effects, which led to the events precipitating his death,'' the chief said.
Lane said Hill's behavior became increasingly erratic, adding that Hill went in and out of his house several times. He said most of Hill's friends left the house, although two remained in Hill's upstairs bedroom, Lane said.
"At some point, the victim was alone (at the house) and left the house,'' Lane said. "We believe he ended up in the water. I can't say how he got there. We don't believe there was foul play involved.''
Hill's father reported Dylan missing on Sunday, and as he was at the station making his report, the 16-year-old's body was discovered in Wonson's Cove.
The police chief said Hill's father was not aware drugs were being used in his house, and also believed his son was safe at home Saturday.
"The father thought the victim was upstairs in the bedroom with his two friends,'' Lane said. "I doubt very much if he knew they were doing drugs.''
Lane said it was too soon in the investigation to say whether anyone will face charges.

Glouster is on the north east caost and its the middle of winter here, fisherman diie all the time by falling in those cold Atlantic waters, there's no way to survive once you fall in, even if your lucky enough to have on a "life vest".

I know. It was really a combination of shrooms and shit friends but HEY we can just blame the marijuana.
If I eat some cheese, drink a ton of wine, and get into an accident, should we blame the cheese?

Wow, a lot of people jumping the gun in the gun in this thread.
How do we know it was either?
First of all, I don't think the friends are to blame at all. From this story, what did they do wrong?
Second of all, the mushrooms may have contributed but as someone said a few posts up: it's the middle of winter, you don't need to be in the water very long to get hypothermia and die. Could have just been a honest mistake/accident.

well, if he "drowned" it wasn't the cold water. who knows if a good enough autopsy was done.. but, either way, inexperience and ignorance was certainly a factor of this kids death. if he's going to indulge on the pleasures of illegal substances at a young age... at least know how to handle yourself -- a sitter would have been a good idea. even at 16 you should be smart enough to research what you're doing before doing it -- especially since his mind was probably packed with the "facts" about what happens to your body and brain when you do drugs.
sucks that he didn't make it and i feel sorry for his family.

It is sad when a young person dies, its also selfish if the first thing you think is "what's gonna happen to our spores now?"
No one is gonna take your damn spores from you, but I bet if the investigation points to a home grow that one of his friends grew from an online "spore kit" , you can bet your ass the parents are gonna scream pretty loud about it! You know you would too if your son died.

I hate to hear about children dying on drugs. It makes me wonder if society was more accepting towards human nature, and less concerned with trying to be godlike/clean/drug free, perhaps the father could have been home to help his son-maybe the son could have been more open with his desires to take drugs and some kind of arrangement could have been made to have a drug sitter. Whatever the case could have been the scape goat should not be the drugs/parents/freinds- drugs-which were already illegal and yet still a 16 year old had no problem getting them thru illicit means-- perhaps if someone old enough/wise enough was present they could have prevented the situation- the freinds were young dumb and obviously intoxicated to let their freind wander off. Ill pray for peace for this childs family-something they truly need now.
