this has been posted a lot already
I personally think its a blessing in disguise
shes probably a really sweet person(she seems that way) and she may have gotten sucked into Hollywood bullshit had this not happened
now shes learning what its like to be in pain and even face embarrassment just for walking down the street(though she doesn't seem all that embarrassed)
probably something she'd never experienced before this
it'll probably end up being good for her spirit
and if her husband stands by her then she'll experience what its like to have someone who truly loves her no matter what
thats pretty special in and of itself

its probably very difficult to see the possible positive in this right now for her
give her a few years and see what she says

What do you mean by closer to God? Happiness can be achieved by transcending suffering, sure, but this doesn't mean that suffering is necessary at all... just that suffering is one more obstacle to be overcome in one's spiritual journey.

I guess the easiest way to put it is, When the Ego suffers you learn to identify less with the Ego and more with the transcendental part of yourself. It's almost the catalyst to the "Spiritual Journey."
I think Ram Dass said something along the lines of "You have to suffer, but you can't be the one suffering."

I guess my point is that if one experiences no suffering at all and is in a permanent state of happiness then there is no real need for a spiritual journey in the first place. The only reason Buddha sought Enlightenment was because he stepped outside his palace.

He stepped out of the palace because he realized he wasn't truly happy... he needed something more. I think we have to be subjected to some degree of darkness so we can see the light. Buddha put himself through hell before he found the "Middle Way." If we were living in a hedonistic paradise we would have no motive to cultivate qualities such as courage and compassion. I'd argue in such a place it would be impossible for morals to even exist. I'm sure such places exists, but I believe we chose to incarnate on Earth to learn... to achieve something better than any pleasure paradise could ever offer us.

I agree; once we have achieved a hedonistic paradise there is no longer any necessity for morality. And why should there be? The only reason we try to cultivate courage and compassion is to reduce suffering in the world around us... if there's no more suffering then we don't need these qualities anymore.

I think both are comparably happy but the latter state requires much more work to achieve. The problem is that most of us humans have already bitten into the poisoned apple of Knowledge; you can't very easily crawl back into the sheltering womb once you've become aware of suffering.

How so? Happiness is happiness whether or not that happiness is achieved via ignorance or knowledge. Like I said though, for most of us the former type of happiness is impossible because we've already experienced suffering.

IMO, Desire based happiness is like a roller coaster - ups and downs. When your not eating a twinkie or shooting up heroin you want to be doing those things. This is how I see the difference between psychedelics and meditation. Meditation is about sustaining the mindset, bringing it into every aspect of your life. Your always going to come down off of drugs no matter how hard you try, whether it's hours or days later.

I completely agree, but all this means is that certain methods are more or less effective than others at achieving long-lasting happiness. We're still satisfying our desires to meditate and achieve permanent happiness, so we are therefore still pursuing desire-based hedonism.
