well a friend and i want to start a biz. we want to open up a coffee shop. Ive been a coffee snob for years and home roast all my green beans my self and make my own blends.
we just dont know if there is any money in it or will we be barely getting by?
we plan on making it pretty unique. laid back, live music, good sandwiches/soups, and homemade dog/cat treats//etc....
good or bad idea???

Location is important!!!! If you could get it near an office building or college/university/any school, you would make plenty... its a great idea especially if you make your own. I know quite a few people that prefer mom and pops coffe shops vs starbucks or peets. Sounds like a good idea... just need to determine a good location. The rest will be a piece of cake.
Just my opinion of course.

Location Is what it's all about. Even if you suck for a while, if you have good location you will have a constant stream of new interested customers.

A friend of mine Jared has, like you, had an almost crippling passion for great coffee coupled with the desire to begin his own business in the area. After playing with a small roaster for some time, he spent some $30K buying a large-scale custom roasting machine that filled half of his garage, buying the raw coffee directly from small farmers in central and south America since he is fluent in Spanish (a former Spanish language teacher), and personally delivering his product by car to the local residents and restaurants in his town and the surrounding area, also shipping product over the internet.
Within the last year or two, he found two investors to partner with him in starting his own cafe to serve his product, while continuing to distribute directly to consumers and restaurants via recurring order delivery and internet sales. This man is incredibly passionate about his craft, and I will tell you that he absolutely works his ass off. Even though, a year or so in, the brick and mortar business is making more than even their most optimistic expectations had predicted, his days are long and he still has to climb out from the debt initially invested into the business in terms of land leasing, interior development of the store, upgrading his roasting equipment, hiring and training people to work in the store, etc.
Nevertheless, the business is certainly viable, but if you want it to be a success you must educate yourself tremendously and then make sure that you can educate everyone else working with you (and those to whom you plan to sell) to the same level of understanding. Then you need the capital to actually purchase a quality roaster, the land and accessory equipment for the business.
If you're curious about the brand I speak of, it's Noble Coffee Roasting, and you should definitely read this spotlight article about Jared's business. Though I don't drink a LOT of coffee, I can tell you that the coffee he has prepared for me has been the best coffee I've ever tasted.

I think that is a very unique idea! Its odd, but who is to say that you won't be able to sell them? :0P I imagine you would be targeting upper mid/upper class with those treats. I wouldn't imagine anyone else buying them. :0P

Anything labeled organic is deemed high and mighty by some. Its a little silly sometimes because I see other "lower quality" food companies hop on board with organic spaghetti etc. Sounds like a great idea, you just really have to work at it for a while...!!!! Nothing beats running your own business though. Best of luck on your adventures!!

I can also say, that by far, coffee shop is the number one business idea i hear people come up with. And the majority of the time, It is not very well thought out. Like Geo said above, any business you are involved in you should take very seriously, and know the in's and out's of very well.
usually when someone tells me they want to open a coffee shop I remind them that 80% of all small businesses fail within the first 5 years, and that the rate is higher for restaurants.... It can be done, but my point is that it must be done well.
recently, we have seen somewhat of a shift in dynamic in the coffee industry. in the last year or so, there has been a shift in customer base from the high end coffee shops such as starbucks, to more affordable places such as Mc Donalds. It seems that when the belt had to tighten, $7 lattes had to go...
Another interesting note about coffee shops is their atmosphere. I have loved a number of small coffee shops where I used to go and hang out, and see local bands, and never really buy anything..... and they all were the best coffee shops i had ever been to, and they all went out of business
one other interesting thing i should note, is that one of the biggest pitfalls of a small business operator is said to be over infatuation with ones product or idea. I haven't seen it happen myself, but i can say that it was repeated over and over and over again in my textbooks, and by my professors...
When Geo started posting his story above about his friends love of coffee, I Thought it might have been a tale of cautionary woe. However it was not, and i am glad to see that. Regardless, you should always have a very good look at your intentions before starting a small business.

Small Business Accounting. I think this course (or something similar) would be a must unless you have real-world bookkeeping experience. (btw the word bookkeep-er -ing is the only word in the English language where letters are used back to back three consecutive times. so, there)
Does anyone know of any associate degrees or certificates in small business operations in your locale, or maybe on-line? I have a bachelors and dont feel like returning to school for another 4 yr degree.
There is a government subsidized small business certificate program offered through the downtown community college that I might look into

It seems more risky than it's worth imo. Lots of fixed costs and if no one shows up it's quite a bit of debt to get hit with. Do you know how much money you'd probably make?
