CORTLAND, N.Y. – Authorities say an 18-year-old patient high on psychedelic mushrooms stabbed a nurse in the chest with a pocket knife during an examination at a central New York hospital.
Alex Stephens of Freeville was charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon after the incident at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cortland Regional Medical Center. He was arraigned in Cortland City Court and jailed without bail.
Police say the 53-year-old male nurse is in guarded condition with internal bleeding.
Police say Stephens had ingested hallucinogenic psilocybin (sy-luh-SY'-buhn) mushrooms while visiting friends at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
Authorities did not know whether Stephens had a lawyer.

A former Tompkins Cortland Community College student who had ingested hallucinogen mushrooms was charged with stabbing a Cortland Regional Medical Center nurse early today.
Alex J. Stephens, 18, of Freeville was at the hospital for a mental health evaluation when he stabbed a 53-year-old male nurse in the chest once at 1:30 a.m., Cortland Police said. He was subdued, arrested and charged with first-degree assault, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, they added.
The victim is in guarded condition with internal bleeding at Upstate Medical Hospital, police said.
Stephens, who withdrew from classes earlier in the week, was visiting friends at the campus residence halls, college officials said. Stephens’ friend told campus public safety officers that Stephens had overdosed on a narcotic drug, and Dryden Ambulance took Stephens to the hospital for evaluation under the mental hygiene law, police said.
Stephens became unruly at the hospital, pulled a folding knife from his waistband and stabbed the nurse, police said. Their investigation revealed that Stephens had been using psilocybin mushrooms earlier in the evening, they added. Psilocybin is a hallucinogen, according to the Department of Justice.
Stephens was arraigned in Cortland City Court and remanded to Cortland County Jail without bail.

How do they know it was shrooms? sounds like PCP.
They did say overdose on a "narcotic drug"

I don't see how it's possible mushrooms would make you want to stab somebody. You're right, it does sound like PCP, I think they got it wrong. Or else they are just labeling it as shrooms to make it sound more dangerous.

I have had freak out episodes like this off of xanax, klonopin or valium. I get into a raging fit if set off (usually alcohol involved)
Perhaps he ate some MAOI's or something to counteract shrooms. Made them more potent or whatnot.
At high levels of shrooms, I usually just lay there and vomit for a while, then whenever I can walk about I'm laughing to hard to want to stab anyone.
I think other drugs were invoveed.

It sounds to me like this person was unstable mentally to begin with and should not have eaten mushrooms to begin with. He withdrew from classes, which means he either stopped caring and failed them, or was under a lot of mental stress and was having a life crisis of sorts and had to withdraw from them. Either way, that's not the best time to eat mushrooms, as he apparently found out.
Also his friends are dumb for taking him to the hospital. He was apparently conscious, so I couldn't see what reason they would have had for bringing him there. Almost seems premeditated on the part of the assailant.

ahh... good 'ol cortland. There are some strange folks out there. Stupid college kids diving into unwanted unknowns.
Last year some girl dosed 2 hits and put her head through the a 48" flatscreen and broke a bunch of windows in the house next door to my friends.
You guys are trying to make it seem like mushrooms have no negative effects. Once something starts freaking you out it's hard to come out of it. You don't need PCP to not know whats going on. He was having a bad trip, paranioa.
Stop defending the drug so much, it's fantastic, don't get me wrong, I'll eat mushrooms spiritually for the rest of my life, but they cut deep into your imagination and you can do extremely irrational things.
When people make up lame excuses to defend drugs, they sound exactly that, lame; burnt out and in stoner denial. We all are, but don't scream it in the streets!

Unless the dude was acually threatening to hurt them physical, taking him to the hospital is a horrid thing to do.
Even if a friend threatened to tear me apart while on drugs i'd do anything but take him to the doc's. Tape him to a chair or some shit lol.

I'm basing that off my experience of jobshadowing a nurse. She showed me the drunk tank and the room with a bed to strap down patients who are being disobedient. She said that nurses have no intention of making the detoxification process comfortable since people undergoing detox have "already had their fun".
I also base this off my girlfriend who is majoring in nursing. If someone pisses her off and she has to give them a shot, she will "accidently" miss the vein so she has to stab them multiple times with a needle.
When you spend most of the day wiping asses and changing bedpans and getting ordered around by doctors, you tend to take your displaced aggression out on other people whenever you can get away with it. I could be wrong, but I suspect this nurse wasn't being very nice to this shroomer because it's hard to believe that this kid would decide to commit such a violent act without being provoked.
