Skinny Tire Bikers Thread.

I love this sub forum way too much to not post in here.
I'm building up a new bike, made specifically for heavy training on a Rail trail that leads to the next state.
I usually Ride track bikes,but I'm planning for a massive tour fall '10/spring 2011
Going all out on the exotic yuppie mobile this time.
This is my new frame. skinny
It's nuts...

Big weave Carbon TT frame. weighs like 1200grams
Going kinda wacky on gearing. I'm thinking a single 55t front( i like giant sprockets) and maybe a tiny 6 speed rear, enough gear to haul unholy ass/destroy my legs, but not so much as to be all complicated and finicky. Not sure about wheel set yet. Certainly Disk rear.
I'm Gonna look like a douche for sure, but fuck it, I'll be hauling balls through the woods.
Goal is to finish the trail and back in one entire full day of riding. 140+- miles. My average ride pace over and hour or so is 16mph, so at ride pace, that's like 7-8 hours of solid riding. Give it time to rest, water, some food off trail to refuel and it's certainly within a days ride.
High speed Bike touring, hah. It'll catch on one day.
I know some of you ride,Don't think I've seen any roadbike's on here though. With the system of Rail trails, and greenways being layed all over nowadays you can be hauling ass on a dedicated roadie and be right in the center of the woods. I can ride 3-4 times a week, roughly 20-40miles a ride and never be on the actual "road".
it's lovely stuff.
anyone? Your rides,bikes,training?

Rail trails are amazing man.
This one happens to be the longest yet built,so it's really got a variety of terrain.
Your in long tall tunnels through a montain one moment, hundred feet up over the forest on super old train trestle, now smooth path. really lovely riding.

Rode 20miles on my ghetto Track bike today before i blew my rear tire. having to walk the bike back like 7 fucking miles.
The irony is i had to weld the rear wheel on the frame(long story),just hoping the rear tire wouldn't blow anytime soon. Naturally I get my 3rd ever flat on a roadbike today.
ghey. was a Nice wet, rainy ride until then though.

sweet bike
i too love biking, i rode 15 - 20 miles a day all summer, sometimes up to 40 a day, but im usually pretty beat after that
heres my bike:

these are pictures from when i first got it, since then i've put some drop style handlebars and toe clips on it, and purchased a much better lock. i also put a winter tire and wheel on the rear because the tiny road tire was about to pop from skidding too much
as stupid as it sounds, i really love riding through downtown in traffic on my bike, i can get through rush hour traffic faster than any car, and it feels great to pass car after car after car at red lights
cool website, i just looked at it, and ive rode most of the trails in my county, but i found a few that i didnt know about
sweet to see fellow bikers on the shroomery

Count me in. I've been riding this guy for a year now. I try to go minimum 13 miles on my days off. Before my wife lost her job, I would ride 20-30 miles on my days off. Now that she's not working, I tend to sleep in a little bit more, and I'm definitely noticing the pudge that I had managed to work off return.
We don't have any rails-to-trails out here, I gotta ride on the same roads as all the local & tourist traffic. It's kind of dangerous, I gotta be a little more on guard than I used to be back in the midwest. I definitely miss my old greenbelt bike trail, and the rail trails that got me around a few different small towns. I could do 50-60 milers no problem!!!
Here's a photo of me on a cross-state bike ride called RAGBRAI. It's a huge bike-ride/party that cruises thru my home state of Iowa. 8000+ cyclists plus another few thousand hangers-on & part-time riders. The second is me & my now-wife dipping our skinny tires in the Mississippi River at the completion of our 500 mile ride (seven days of cycling).

EDIT--- Fuck it! -- I am going for a ride right now!

hell yea! Thread success.
That's awesome Gr8. Long rides are what it's all about. I seriously want to start high speed Bike Touring, hah. 400+ mile races. Something like the Great Divide on a roadbike.
walter, I Love motobecanes, I had a mirage as well. Lovely bikes for the prices you can pick them up for. Mine was White with this racing stripe fade deal, hah
Riding Fixed through the city does kick serous ass, full on sensory overload.
I just wanna go really, really fast ,and cover as much ground as possible these days.

I have a tandem, too. It broke yesterday on a cruise through town. I will post that story later and revive this thread whne it needs.

I've always wanted to try a fixie. I've got a single speed mountain bike and love the quiet smooth efficiency of it, but having no breaks would be something else...
Your motobecane is very nice looking Walter, how much did that set you back?

It's worth a try man. I've built Fixed gears out of 10 dollar thrift store roadbikes. Just leave a front brake on. Fixed gear is insanely addictive. My favorite way to ride bar non,but for Touring I'll need a few gears for now.
the carbon is a factory nameless copy of a many thousand dollar Cervelo. Shipped for 5-600 hundred. crazy cheap all things considered. I bike it's modeled after is like 7-8 grand.
I still probably end up making it Fixed for now, until i can plan out my wacky custom Gruppo.
Dont mean to answer for walter, but my Mirage was 80 bucks in good condition. Seems average around here.

i bought the bike, a brake, and an extra set of tires and rims for $300 dollars (pretty damn cheap)

yes fixed ridding is addicting, i bought my bike with intentions of putting a brake on it and using the freewheel, but after riding it for one night, i decided not to. also it is a a very good idea to have a front brake on a fixie. just makes things alot safer
also, riding fixed has made me a much better biker, it forces you to look farther down the road and plan ahead more. and once you can skid, and stop in reasonable distances, a brake isn't necessary, but it sure would help, (and save your legs) you also want toe clips
---safe riding to everyone

That's Why I'm going big and fancy for my new bike. Something too nice to justify getting rid off.

Do you skinny tire bikers don full cycling garb? shorts / jersey / silly little caps? I usually wear bike shorts when I go for 5+ miles, but I wear them UNDER a pair of board shorts, so the world doesn't know I'm smuggling plums. I don't own any jerseys, and when I ride I like to wear old tie-dye shirts or aloha shirts. The real cyclists tend to stare at me while I laugh at them.
What about clip-in shoes? I bought my first pair this spring and I can't believe I've gone without for so many years!

I just wear pants that aren't baggy, and a shirt. I have a pair or real nice full fingered cannondale gloves that I wear anytime I'm on the bike, but that's about it.
I do have one jersey. It's a Martini racing:Ala; the older BMW/Porshe race cars,so i kind had to own it,hah. I never wear it though.
I prefer nice metal/double strap cages to Clip ins,but i ride Clip in exclusively on the Downhill MTB i borrow all a lot. Having to really move the bike up and over things,to the sides, etc, i feel much more in control clipped in. For road biking i like being able to wear normal shoes and just slide out.

Thats weird what you say about the control on a DH bike, Captain ... I LOVE clip in pedals for commuting, xc, and touring but always rode flat pedals when i was DH or Freeriding.
I am in the market for a new pair of clipless shoes right now, because i lost my 2nd pair of favorite northwaves at burning man last year, and now they discontinued that model. I get northwaves for approx. 50% off from my work but all their shoes look like fancy roadie shoes!!!!
Damn.
When riding, i just wear a teeshirt, or a button up shirt and tighter fitting shorts with lycra underneath, although ill consider just wearing lycra in the future.

maybe it's just preference. I'll answer you by saying i probably supplement lack of skill by manhandling the bike all over the place. While doing fast or technical Downhill, I'm on one or no wheels probably more than i'm on two. Always hopping the bike over shit, kinda side hopping, laying the rear over a different direction and shit.

Captain, i have the same riding style as you:
"I'm on one or no wheels probably more than i'm on two. Always hopping the bike over shit, kinda side hopping, laying the rear over a different direction and shit."
Totally preference though around here where freeriding is HUGE you'll pretty much only see racers wearing clips on DH bikes. No matter, to each their own.
Gr8fulJ420 - i'm familiar with the keen sandles, my warehouse actually sells them and i can get them 50% off ... but i really am married to a super stiff lace up + velcrow type shoe. Thanks for the heads up anyways.

hell yea, hah. It's a fun way to ride. Full on,full force. I really Love DH,there just isn't much riding here. I have a Fully Built ex racer Santa Cruz Superlight i use a lot. My dad used to race back in the day,he got a wild spur to try to ride again a few years back and spent a good 4-5 grand on this set up,and rode it once. As much as we don't like each other, I think he hates seeing it collect dust, so I borrow it for a few weeks at a time.
It's the bike I hope to Ride the Great Divide race with in a few years.
This town is seriously FULL of bmx/ex-bmx riders. All my buds from here used to ride, and they all were damn near pro/pro am. Being in their late 20's now, many of them made the switch to freeride/DJ bikes nowadays. Non of them ride clips either. They all ride trails( ie:Bmx trails)on those bikes so they really dont need clips. I still ride bmx on trials, obviously no clips.
I like to ride real tight, twisting, technical, ludacris speed downhill,so i need to be able to lift/manhandle the bike at a moments notice. Doing a bmx/bunny hop is nearly impossible for me in that environment.
I'd like to get more serious about it,but we only have a few places to ride here, and most is pretty slow, trampled smooth single/double track.

Anybody enjoying the fall riding? We don't have much seasonal change here, so I am lucky to cycle all year. Been putting in daily 13-milers. Did a 25 into work and back to pick up my paycheck on my day off last Friday. My wife sprained her ankle a bit on Halloween and hasn't been up to riding lately, so I've been doing all-out solo runs up & down the main drag of town in the evenings.

ive been doing some fall riding, in fact i may go 20 - 30 miles a couple of days this week, since i dont start my new job for a week. also, i thought id give you guys some bike porn.
heres the pugeot i found for free up the street a few moths back. im in the process of painting it right now. im thinking flat black with some sort of stenciled white pattern on the top tube. after the painting is done, i just need a crank, stem, some new deep v's, and some bars. (im trying to decide on drops, or bullhorns)

My trek. Taken at Big Sur three days into a ride from SF to LA. I do all sorts of riding. Trying to build a single speed mountain bike next.
Have a 6 day ride in Florida next month from Tampa to Gainsville.
My goal is to ride Seattle to Portland in one shot next year at the annual STP ride. I covered 136 in a day this week, by next summer it should be in the bag.

yeah, how long of a day? i can do about 40 miles in a little under 2 1\2 - 3 hours.(my fixie tops out around 25 - 30 mph comfortably, any faster and its hard for my legs to keep up.) props to you though, thats much better stamina than me. im hoping to train all winter and spring, then when summer comes around i'd like to try biking from minneapolis to either duluth or canada. thats 150 - 300 miles depending on where i go.

Walt, since your in the midwest, ever been on the cross-state bike rides in Iowa, MN, or Wisconsin? Iowa's ride is a great time (7 time rider myself) and I have heard a lot of good things about Wisconsin riding.
We've had a few days of rain here, and I am antsy to get back out on the road.

No, I haven't been on any long rides like you speak of, in fact, I think the closest thing I've done that compares to an organized ride is the monthly critical mass. I do however, want to try a few next summer. I've been commuter biking for the past two years minus the coldest weeks in winter. I'm confident in my riding style and stamina, but I still haven't been on a 50+ mile ride, so I'm going to train like hell all winter and spring and hopefully by summer I'll be able to do a 75 - 80 mile ride and still be able to walk the next day.
How long is the iowa ride time wise? Are there any informative links you could post?
thanks

This should be easily achievable (although, are you talking about doing this on a fixie?) - Riding that distance really is not that hard, more boring than anything.

When it comes time to do over 75 miles in a day, I'll ride a single speed, but i figure if I can do 50 miles on a fixie, 100+ miles on a single speed shouldn't be too hard.

Alright, in that case ill take by my previous statement.
That distance on a geared bike would be easily achievable.

I signed up for a century ride next weekend. There are 25, 50, 75, and 100 mile checkpoints with a sag wagon cruisin the route until 2pm. I would have no problems making the 25 or 50 miler.... I signed up for the century and I'll play it by ear when I hit the 75 mile checkpoint. My wife currently has a sprained ankle and doesn't want to ride, so she told the club sponsoring the ride she'd volunteer to work / drive / whatever.

bumping to brag.....
Did my first century yesterday, just under 7 hours saddle time. It was windy & hilly for most of the ride, a few sections I had the wind at my back and was able fly, it was great. Also got to ride in a sweet draft line for the first time in years. Until yesterday, I think my longest single day ride was 88 or 89 miles.

Here's a map I tossed together on Google Earth. Start off on the south side, headin north along the blue route..... then backtrack along the green route to the far west side of the island.... then follow the red route (again, backtracking) all the way back down to the park we started from. The "turnaround points" mark the distance you will have gone when you get back to the beginning, not the actual distance you've biked at the time. I was initially planning on only doing 75, but I got to the turnaround point way earlier than I thought I would, and figurd I had plenty of time to get it done..... AND I DID IT!!! WOOOOOO!!!!
Amazing weather, great views, big hills, hard riding, awesome day all around!

Thought I'd try reviving this thread, the twin cities just got a couple of inches of snow, so I went on a 12-15 mile ride. So Much Fun. I was skidding all over the place, and 90%+ of the roads haven't been plowed and salted yet, so I managed to stay pretty dry. Anybody else enjoy winter riding?

I used to commute to work on my bike all winter. The Parks& Rec dept did a a damn good job of snow removal on the bike trails. One winter I rode a Giant mtb, two other winters I rode my 10 speed (an old schwin). The old Schwinn held up way better in the cold than the mtb did, it was a year-round bike for me for years.
I'd don a giant pair of army-surplus wool pants, my huge coat, wool socks on my hands and take to the snow for an easy 2-mile commute. Rode through a couple of great winter storms to get to work. They thought I was insane.

I love the look people give me when they realize that I do in fact bike in the winter. The other nigh after getting off work, a co-worker saw me unlocking my bike and asked with a sense of amazement, "You rode your bike here?" I replied, "yeah, its fun."
Wool socks on the hands? I would have never thought of that, but I bet it works great. I'll have to give it a try. I just put on as many layers of clothes as I can will still being able to move.

I've ridden on the outdoor Comp one in the city a few times. Just practice days and a few small sprint/pursuit contest. It's actually not easy to ride on them.Takes some time and skill just to make it around correctly, much less at race pace.
Doing team laps is particularly weird to pick up. The front man heads up the side wall and falls back pack to fall back into the teams largest draft, giving him a rest. then new guy fresh to keep high pace for a while, then repeat. It's almost ballet.
If i could I'd be there everyday. The 'drome is Biking for me. The end goal.
Here's one of the single best depiction of 'drome racing ever.

Wow! I can't believe I didn't see this thread earlier. I used to ride once a day at least 15 miles or so, but I've been slacking lately. I still ride quite a bit, but not as many "joy rides" and more transportation rides. I really love riding and working on bikes, it makes me so happy!
Here's my bike as of probably 2 years ago

I've changed a few things, seat, seatpost, pedals, tires, just little stuff.
Anybody do centuries here? I went on a bike/camping trip last spring, and had soo much fun, but I want to get into centuries, but I always forget about them, or have something else planned the day of.

Pretty excited to ride some again, even if it's on the shittiest bike ever. please pray i dont get a flat, hah. I wont have my welder with me to weld the rear wheel back on.

Going for an early evening ride. I've had flat tire for two weeks now and been too lazy to fix it and get riding again. But it's time. Fixed it yesterday and did some errands, been out drinking since pau hana (after work) today and gonna take a nice little spin down to the other side of town or nice beach park to watch the sunset. Happy riding dudes. Hopefully some of you are braving the winter. I am a spoiled bitch, no denying. Aloha!

my skinny tire bike is a caad8 with a bb30 and sram mix i built up myself. cost around $1000 with all second hand ebay and craigslist stuff but all in good condition. this is my fourth cannondale (2 caad5 track bikes and an 88 black lightening), can't get away from this company; they make such solid shit. she's very damn fast, fairly comfortable, fairly light, and gets a lot of looks.

OP; is that one of those ebay carbon frames? how do you like it so far?

Yeah, summer riding is a bit more enjoyable Anyone from Ohio/Indiana/Michigan area? There's a Worst day of the year ride in Ann Arbor this coming Sunday. I went last year and it was pretty fun, lot's of cool people, and it ends at the Arbor Brewing Company and they had free mircobrews last time for people in the ride

So is it Spring yet? Anybody putting on miles?
I've been lazy the last few months and not riding more than 20 miles a week (a weak, more like it). No long rides, just errands and a few cruises across town. There is a (metric) century ride next month I am going to sign up for. I've talked with a buddy who's done it before and says that its one of the hilliest routes on the island and has (he claims) the steepest single stretch of road on the island. So I guess that means I should get out and start cranking again.
And in that note.... I am going for a ride, to the beach, to meet up with a Shroomery member who told me he'd be there all day :-)
A hui hou!

There's the 20 mile loop I did yesterday, starting from the nearby grocery store. The upper road is a busy-ish highway with a couple long hills. The road down to the beach park is resort-land and golf-course central. Some of the fanciest and most expensive hotels in Hawaii are located on that stretch. The road is wide, lined with trees & tropical vegetation and a great ride with quite a few rolling hills. On the way back I took the lower road, which is basically the "business district" through my town, alternating between local neighborhoods, retail districts, and parks.
If anybody else feels like sharing their routes I'd love to see & hear about your favorite rides.

heres a route i take pretty often, the loop is about as big as yours gr8ful. this loop is 95% bike lane or paved trail. (i love minneapolis) plus, you get to see a good amount of the city, lots of good views and lots of water, takes me anywhere between 1.5 hrs. and 4 hrs, depending whether i stop and nap in a sunny park, including the extra 8-10 miles to and from my house to the loop.
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3577980
my favorite part is between miles 4 and six, its a straight level ride on what i would consider a bike freeway (2 lanes for bikes and one for peds)

BUMP!!!
Signed up for a century ride! I have not exactly been in the saddle much but I decided to go for it anyway. At least this year I weigh about 12 pounds less than when I tried it last year.

The route is different too. It goes east along the Hana Highway... which is going to be an ass-kicker to say the least. I estimate around 30 miles of steep elevation gains & losses, paired with very twisty roads being traveled on by retarded tourists. Oh, and it's tropical rainforest, so it could very well be raining or very humid.
The ride starts at the very south side of the island, then heads north and to the east. The turn-around point is deep in the rainforest. It turns around, goes back through town and partway to the west of town... at that point we turn around again and then begin the final leg back down to the south where it all begins.
And for a bit of reference, I live roughly underneath of one of those pink arrows along the coastline.

It must be nice living in Hawaii. I just rode home from work about 6 miles in the snow on my fat-tired snow bike. (surprisingly, it only took about 10 minutes longer than normal) Good luck on your century ride.

Aloha! The bike ride was awesome, although due to my lack of training and some extremely steep hilly sections....... I only completed about 65 miles of the ride.
Got a flat tire 6 miles into the ride, that sucked, definitely delayed me a bit while changed it -- at least I came prepared with a spare tube and mini-pump.
The ride was sponsored by a local bike shop and a bicycling club out here..... there as a 30 dollar registration fee, but I think most of the registration money was spent on food & beer for the post-ride party.
Riding in Hawaii is awesome.... year round cycling..... flat along the coastlines, hilly as you go inland / climb the volcano.... amazing views.... My wife has been able to ride bike to her job(s) for the last 5 years.
I definitely miss riding my bike around town in the middle of winter - but I don't miss winter!

As much as I hate winter, I do like riding around in the snow, it's challenging, and sometimes faster than driving.
I'm glad to hear you were prepared with an extra tube, I always carry a spare tube, tire levers, an adjustable wrench, and a couple of screwdrivers in case something happens. Give me a little bit, and I'll post pics of my new-er, summer, skinny tire fixie, and my old, beat up, fat tired, winter bike.

This is Tiger Kiwi: It's an old pugeot frame I found a couple of years ago, stripped it, painted it, and rebuilt it. Its fast and light as hell. I've got a 46 tooth crank up front, and a 13 tooth in the rear.
And this is my clunker winter bike, I don't care if it gets rusty or beat up, but it gets through fresh snow no problem. Its a lot slower and heavier than my other bike, but it makes commuting in the winter a hell of a lot easier.

I have an old Raleigh Elix which seems like a one of a kind deal. There are a couple other Elixes (Elixen?) out there but none of them are quite like this one. Just a couple weeks ago I completed a 400 mile ride from Budapest to Munich. Here's the bike at the Hungarian/Slovak border:

That's the original seat but it hurt my ass so bad that I bought a new one the next day in Bratislava.

9 days including 1 rest day and 2 short days to delay for weather, which was a lot longer than I planned. It was uphill and upwind the whole way and I was on a racing bike with no panniers. Still, not a very good average speed. : )

Right on, I just started up again for the winter. (I always seem to take a couple of weeks off in the beginning of winter, then I go stir crazy and get out again.) Maybe Ill leave for work early and get a couple extra miles in.

Man, it seems like everyone is moving to Bogota these days. Last time I was there (almost 10 years ago), there wasn't a bike in sight. I wonder what it's like nowadays, and why so many hipsters are moving there...

I ride on 700x23c tires but I want to get another bike or new tires that are a lot less thin.
I saw a bike parked on campus with tires that were maybe 2.5 inches wide, they were so awesome.

Nice dude! I just picked up some new skinny tires as well - a Univega Superstrada with Shimano RSX components. It was $20 at a church rummage sale. How could I resist?
I bought it with the intention of turning it into a fixie, despite never having ridden one. I am beginning to read some forums & pages on fixed-gear conversions. Hopefully that can be a spring project for me.
And to top it off... My wife tells me that a co-workers husband is wanting to get rid of a high end road bike! She's telling me I should buy this guys bike and then hand down the Lemond I've been riding to her.... and then she could retire the trail bike she commutes to work on.
There is a 100km ride coming up in April I need to train for, too :-)

Good deal on the Univega, I just googled it, and it doesn't seem like you should have any troubles converting into a fixie as long as the frame is in good condition. I don't know if I've posted it before, but this site has tons of info on converting older road bikes into fixed gears: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/ Specifically this page: http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed-conversion.html The rest of the site has just about everything you'll ever need to know about bikes, and a lot of things you don't. If you do get the new bike, I'll be waiting for pics.

I just found this at the good will the other day for 25 bucks. It's in decent condition so i think i'm going to fix it up and make it my first skinny tire bike!
I'm looking for some road bike handlebars to stick back on and make it look more original.
I guess there supposed to be kinda rare they were only made from 74-76 and they cost a bit to make because of the curved post.
more pics in the future.

That is a wicked seat tube. I've never seen anything like it. Good score for 25 bucks.

At first I didn't like them because I was used to standard drop style bars. But after riding around on 'em I realized that my grip isn't as low, but it is wider. So it all comes down to low and tight vs. high and wide. On a long ride when I get tired, its a lot easier to rest on the bullhorns than drops. I have seen a lot of people with their brake levers on the tips of bull horn bars too, but that again all comes down to personal preference.

Just got a new bike. It's a Schwinn Premis. They only made them in '88. It was sort of an entry-level high-end bike with Columbus tubing and fork and pretty light components. Could have slightly better components, but it's <22lbs. as-is. Not bad for a 20+ year old steel frame bike and slightly lighter than the Elix (which I still have).

I finally caved and bought Conti Gatorskins, hopefully they live up to their reputation. It was close to a hundred dollars for bike tires lol

I replaced the crappy tires and bar tape that came with the bike:

Still gotta change the seat and pedals to something a bit more modern.

That bike is effin sweet bro. I'd love to cruise around town on that ride.
And about Gatorskins..... have a pair on my Lemond currently and they seem pretty tough.

How do you like that seat? I'm trying to figure out what to put on my Premis.
I'm also trying to figure out which pedals to use. An SPD system was my first thought, but I have knee problems and that led me to speedplay frogs, but I've read some negative reviews of their longevity/reliability.
What I hate about the clips that the bike has now is having to flip the pedal over in the middle of an intersection...

Gotta add my bike to the list now!

Custom built (Don't worry, I've pulled the back rim tighter, so there's no slack in the chain). Fixed/Flop.

I flipped my bike over to fixed gear a couple weeks ago and I'm Loving the workout! I've been practicing doing most of my braking with my legs and it's definitely helping build my legs back up, especially after an ACL reconstruction last year.
